Abstract

Sago is a carbohydrate-rich food that contains resistant starch. In some parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea, sago is a common staple food. Studies have been performed to elucidate the physicochemical and structural properties of sago starches. The paper's objective is to review potential positive physiological responses to sago-based product consumption from previous records. This study is a literature review of preceding published articles related to sago intake in human subjects’ research. The literature search was performed through databases with assigned keywords combination and then selection of the articles based on the criteria. The outcomes of this review concluded that sago had a lower glycemic index with immediate intestinal absorption. Sago-based products could provide a suitable energy source for sustaining physical performance and promoting faster recovery after exercise. It can be an appropriate alternative as an energy source for active healthy individuals.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic hyperglycemic syndrome that can be accompanied by lipid metabolism disorders. Alloxan is a diabetogenic agent that is associated with an increase in LDL cholesterol levels. Patin fish contain omega-3 and oleic acid, which can potentially reduce or control LDL cholesterol levels. This study aims to determine the effect of Patin fish (Pangasius hypothalmus) oil extract on LDL cholesterol levels of alloxan-induced Rattus norvegicus. The method of this study is the post-test-only control group design. Twenty-seven experimental animals were divided into 3 groups; (1) the 1st group was without treatment, (2) 2nd group was induced with 150 mg/kg BW alloxan on the 7th day; (3) 3rd group was induced with 150 mg/kg BW alloxan on the 7th day and given the Patin fish oil extract at a dose of 73 mg/kg BW on the 10th day for 14 days. Blood samples were taken on the 24th day to determine LDL cholesterol levels. The results of the One-Way ANOVA test showed a significant mean difference, p=0,001 (p<a). The results of the Post-Hoc LSD test showed a meant difference between the 1st group and the 2nd control group p=0,001 (p<a); 2nd group and 3rd group p=0,026 (p<a); between the 1st group and the 3rd group p=0,015 (p<a). Giving alloxan 150 mg/kg BW can significantly increase LDL cholesterol levels of Rattus norvegicus and administration of Patin fish oil extract 73 mg/kg BW can significantly reduce LDL cholesterol levels of Rattus norvegicus.

Abstract

Air pollution was being a very important problem and danger for human life. This was related to diseases that arise due to motor vehicle emissions, especially carbon monoxide. Simulation of air dispersion models is the one way to study about air quality that is needed in this regard. This study aims to determine the distribution of carbon monoxide pollutants in Ahmad Yani's frontage and to anticipate the dangers of these pollutants to the health of the people living around the research location. This research discussed about the mathematical model of the dispersion of CO that emitted from cars that passed through the frontage road on the Ahmad Yani Street, Surabaya. The method used is direct observation in the field and numerical simulation using a mathematical model, Gaussian Line Source Equation Model (GLSEM). GLSEM had prepared based on the mechanism of transport of pollutants in dispersion, diffusion and advection. With GLSEM we calculated CO gas concentration values for certain heights downwind. We validated the model by comparing numerical results and measurements of CO concentration. We used the R2 test and we got an R2 close to one. We simulated GLSEM by used Fortran programming language and visualized it with Surfer. The results of the visualization in June showed that the pattern of CO gas dispersion was influenced by the direction and speed of the wind. The results obtained are that the distribution of CO pollutants in the Ahmad Yani frontage is horizontal/downwind. CO concentrations at night are higher than during the daytime. From the CO dispersion pattern, we had known that there were dangerous of air around the frontage for people health. We conclude that around the frontage road of the Ahmad Yani highway there is sufficient open air space so that the danger of CO pollutants being emitted can be minimized so that the health of the community, namely pedestrians, motorcycle drivers and the community around the location can be protected.

Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB).  Regarding this, Indonesia is ranked second globally in terms of tuberculosis prevalence.  TB cases in Sumenep Regency are increasing every year.  The high incidence of TB in Sumenep mostly is caused by the patients' lack of adherence to taking medication.  The level of compliance in taking drugs can be influenced by several factors including age, educational level, and gender. This study aimed to ascertain the association between medication adherence and recovery in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis at the Gapura Public Health Center Sumenep. This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach, utilizing secondary data from medical records and TB.01 treatment cards. The population in this study consisted of 40 individuals. Total sampling is used to choose samples. The study's findings revealed that most patients 62.5%  were male, 37.5% were between the ages of 26-45, 15% were from Gapura Barat, 35% had an elementary school education, and 55% were farmers. As many as 90% of patients adhere to treatment and 87.5% recover. Additionally, statistical tests yielded a p-value of <0.001. The study concludes a correlation between medication adherence and recovery of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis at the Gapura Public Health Center Sumenep. It is advised that health personnel maintain as many programs as possible, including counseling, home visits, and remote monitoring via telecommunications.

Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disorder that occurs in cartilage. OA is the main cause of disability in adults and generally characterized by pain to the joints that got pressured. Based on several previous studies, it is known that the incidence of osteoarthritis is correlated with synovial inflammation and that inflammatory cytokines play an important role in the expansion of osteoarthritis. Based on these things, the author intends to conduct a literature study with the aim of knowing the role of cytokines on inflammation in knee osteoarthritis. The research was conducted through PubMed and Science Direct databases. The results of the study showed that cytokines played negative different roles depending on the type of cytokines such as those found in knee OA inflammation. Conclusion: Cytokines have a negative effect because they can disrupt synovial tissue balance, induce catabolic processes, and induce osteoclast differentiation and subchondral bone resorption.

Abstract

Pesticides are chemicals used to control insects, fungi, weeds, and others. Unrestrained use of pesticides leads to poisoning that has an impact on inflammation and anemia. To provide evidence for this notion, acetylcholinesterase enzyme levels, blood sedimentation rates, and blood hemoglobin levels of farmers exposed to pesticides have been studied. The study design was quantitative in a cross-sectional manner. The participants of the study were all members of the Kurnia Makmur farmer group in Landasan Ulin Utara District, Banjarbaru with a total sample of 60 people. An examination of acetylcholinesterase, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and hemoglobin enzyme levels was carried out at the Banjar Regency Health Lab. The blood sample was withdrawn from the cubital vein. Spectrophotometry was used to determine acetylcholinesterase enzyme levels, while ESR was determined by the automatic method. Hemoglobin levels are measured by the cyanmethemoglobin method. T-tests were used to compare acetylcholinesterase, ESR, and hemoglobin levels in the normal group and the poisoning group. The study concluded that exposure to a pesticide in farmers' pesticide poisoning may cause inflammation characterized by an increase in ERS. However, there was no decrease in hemoglobin levels.

Abstract

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) brain injury is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a neurotrophin that plays an important role in the natural repair and regeneration of nerves, but the previous study regarding NGF level after brain injury is still scant. This study aims to determine NGF levels in male Wistar rat models that received right Common Carotid Artery (CCA) occlusion.  This study used an experimental and control design conducted in July-August 2021 at the Stem Cell Research and Development Center, Universitas Airlangga. The right CCA occlusion was performed on the Wistar mouse model in the treatment group, then placed in a hypoxic chamber and reperfusion after 60 minutes. Observations of neurology scores were carried out in the first 24 hours.  After 2x24 hours the animal was sacrificed for serum NGF level measurement using the ELISA method. Statistical analysis using t-test for independent sample.  A total of 16 male rats participated in the study.  Eight rats in the treatment group were put into hemiparesis at different levels according to observations of neurological scores.  Statistically meaningful differences in NGF levels were found in the treatment group compared to controls (P<0.05). Average NGF levels in the treatment group were higher than in the controls.  NGF levels in mice with HIE were higher than the control group, which indicates the body's natural mechanism for neuron protection following ischemic hypoxic events.
