Abstract

The high cost of bacterial growth culture media can result in obstacles in the process of practicum or research in the field of microbiology. Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is the oldest fruit plant that grows in the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa and the Middle East. Dates are a source of high energy food with sugar content of 72% - 88%. This research was conducted to test the ability of date palm flour to grow Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus bacteria as an alternative medium to replace NA media. In this study using total number of bacteria/ TPC (Total Plate Count) method to calculated the number of colonies of bacteria. The results of this study the number of colonies of Escherichia coli bacteria was more than the number of colonies of Bacillus cereus, that is 54 x 105CFU/g on concentration media 8 gr. When compared with NA media, date palm flour media can be used as an inexpensive alternative culture medium for bacteria.

Abstract

Osteoarthritis is a chronic global and musculoskeletal disorder. This disease is associated with reduced articular cartilage integrity. The most commonly affected joint is the knee, followed by the hand and the hip. Knee osteoarthritis is associated with aging, obesity, articular cartilage, fatigue, trauma, and congenital joint deformities. Excess body weight is a factor that will exacerbate osteoarthritis. There are still meta-analysis studies involving cohort and case-control studies on osteoarthritis and body mass index (BMI) available, but the relationship between the two variables is still not assessed quantitatively. In addition, research on knee osteoarthritis and BMI is still limited, particularly at Baptis Hospital, where it has never been done. As a result, this study was carried out to determine the relationship between BMI and the degree of knee osteoarthritis. This retrospective cross-sectional study involved 33 patients who suffered from knee osteoarthritis. Data were collected from medical records, and the Kellgren-Lawrence system to assess the degree of knee osteoarthritis based on radiology findings. A total of 7 patients (21.2%) suffered from osteoarthritis grade 1, 10 patients (30.3%) had degree 2, 15 patients (45.5%) had degree 3, and one patient had degree 4. The Spearman correlation test showed that there was no significant relationship (p>0.05). So, it can be concluded from this study that there was no correlation between BMI and the degree of knee osteoarthritis patients at Baptis Hospital, Batu City.

Abstract

In the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 widely spread from Wuhan City of China causing a global pandemic. Pregnant women are a group that is prone to suffer from this disease due to their physiology and immune response changes. In the early stages of pregnancy, COVID-19 infection has the potential to affect organ growth and fetal development. Risk factors, such as late pregnancy, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease have been found to cause more severe manifestation and can increase the risk of premature birth to abortion.  There is also a risk for vertical transmission which further endanger the postnatal outcome. The purpose of this study is to figure out the depiction of distribution of risk factors and mode of delivery in pregnant and postpartum women to better understand the major health problem that commonly found and which mode physicians preferred for safe delivery. This study uses an analytical descriptive approach with cross-sectional design in a period of April 2020 to September 2021 in Regional General Hospital Sidoarjo.. 231 respondents were selected with total sampling of the population and are based on the positive result of antigen swab and/or RT-PCR COVID-19 test and risk factor categories which has been determined. The obtained data then statistically analyzed using The IBM SPSS Statistics and described in a table. The result of this study showed that the majority of respondents are not in the risk category yet certain conditions are commonly found and C-section is preferred for delivery.

Abstract

Even though diphtheria vaccination has been routinely done all around the world, some of developing country still reported outbreak. Indonesia declared diphtheria outbreak in 2017. Diphtheria is characterized by sore throat, fever and the formation of pseudo-membrane located in the tonsils, pharynx or nasal cavity. Diphtheria is very common in children. This study was conducted to determine the clinical picture of diphtheria in children at Sulianto Saroso Infectious Disease Hospital January 2018 - December 2018. The study was descriptive cross – sectional using medical records of diphtheria patients for the period January 2018 – December 2018. The sample is 141 diphtheria patients with the total sampling method. Data analysis using univariate. In this study, out of 141 children with diptheria, the highest number of cases was recorded boy (58,2%), among 6-11 years old, and fully vaccinated (60.3%). Most patient complained about sore throat (95%), fever (93.6%), and bullneck (32.6%). Majority of diphtheria patients with bilateral tonsillar membranes were also found (71.6%), followed by the majority of negative culture results (66.7%), experienced no complications (78.7%), and discharge (99.3%). Clinical characteristic that commonly appeared were sore throat, fever, and bilateral tonsillar membrane. We found it is important to diagnose and treat early to prevent complication and mortality.

Abstract

One of the commonest issues found in pregnant women, mainly in the third trimester, was sleep disruption. Decreasing sleeping time could be a cause of increasing anxiety and/or physical discomfort as higher gestational age. This affected physical and emotional condition such as decreasing concentration, tiredness, and emotional imbalance. The Purpose of this study was to examine lavender and chamomile aromatherapy effectivity on sleep quality of the third semester pregnant women in Semper Barat I Primary Health Care. This study was a quasi-experimental study. Participants were 30 pregnant women which would be divided into two groups interventions, randomly. the participants asked to fill Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) questionnaire before and after intervention. Three drops of essential oil mixed with water was used to fill diffuser. It will be put in the bedroom for two weeks. Lavender and chamomile aromatherapy were effective to improve sleep quality in our participants. Average score of PQSI after intervention using lavender aromatherapy was dropped significantly (11,3 vs 5,73; p=0,0001) as well as chamomile aromatherapy (10,53 vs 6,53; p=0,0001). These facts could be used to help pregnant women to improve sleep quality. It is suggested to healthcare worker to use nonpharmacological therapy as well as this technique.

Abstract

Medical students play an important role in promoting health because they are prospective doctors. Medical students are considered students who have sufficient knowledge and skills about a healthy lifestyle and have a positive attitude towards health. In fact, there are still many medical students who have not implemented a healthy lifestyle. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between knowledge and healthy living attitudes with healthy living behavior patterns in FK–UWKS students class 2018. The study used an observational quantitative approach with a cross-sectional study design with 150 respondents taken using the census method (total sampling). analysis technique using spearman rank test. The results showed that the level of knowledge of healthy living was quite high at 78.1% and positive attitudes about healthy living was 54.7%, while having unhealthy behavior patterns was 92.2%. The Spearman rank test showed that there was a relationship between knowledge of healthy living with healthy living behavior patterns p = 0.000 and a healthy lifestyle also had a relationship with healthy lifestyle behaviors p = 0.000. The conclusion of this study is that the pattern of healthy living behavior is not only influenced by knowledge but also by a healthy attitude.

Abstract

High fat diet (HFD) induces oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction which culminates in fatty liver disease. Autophagy and mitochondrial dynamics are affected by HFD. Turmeric and mangosteen have potential roles as antioxidants and regulators of mitochondrial function in the liver. The study aims to examine the effect of turmeric and mangosteen peel extract on autophagy and mitochondrial dynamics in the liver after HFD induction. Five groups of animals (n=5) as used: negative control, positive control (HFD), turmeric (HFD + 270 mg/kg BW turmeric extract), mangosteen (HFD + mangosteen 270 mg/kg BW peel extract), and fenofibrate (HFD + 15 mg/kg BW fenofibrate). HFD was given for 7 weeks, continued by another 7 weeks plus treatment. Liver sections were extracted to conduct semi-quantitative PCR. Autophagy (LC3, p62), mitophagy (Pink1, Parkin, Bnip3), mitochondrial fission (Drp1, Fis1), and mitochondrial fusion (Opa1, Mfn1, Mfn2) gene expression were measured. LC3 (p=0.048), p62 (p=0.043), Pink1 (p=0.012), Bnip3 (p=0.010), Mfn1 (p=0.015), and Mfn2 (p=0.035) gene expressions were differed significantly, while Parkin (p=0.098) Drp1 (p=0.962), Fis1 (p=0.570), and Opa1 (p=0.055) gene expressions did not differ between groups. Both turmeric and mangosteen peel extract have positive effects by activating autophagy, mitophagy, and mitochondrial fusion in rat liver induced by HFD.
