Abstract

Atherosclerosis causes significant morbidity and mortality. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) can predict the onset of cardiovascular and ischemic stroke in the future. CIMT, the measurement of atherosclerosis, is determined in vivo using carotid ultrasound. CIMT is associated with traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as age, sex, race, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, exercise habits, blood pressure, dyslipidemia, dietary patterns, medications used, glycemia, hyperuricemia, anthropometric parameters associated with obesity. In addition, CIMT is also associated with novel risk factors, ie genotypes, cardiovascular anthropometry parameters, rheumatoid arthritis, immunologic diseases, inflammatory cytokines, lipid peroxidation, chemocyte anthropometric parameters, infectious diseases, vitamin D, matrix metalloproteinases, and other diseases

Abstract

Obesity is a health problem whose prevalence tends to increase in Indonesia. Obesity becomes a concern, because it is one of the parameters that often followed by impaired of glucose tolerance in the metabolic syndrome. In Indonesia, Tamarindus indica is believed as a body slimming substance so it has possibility to become an alternative therapy that is easily available and cheap for obesity. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of Tamarindus indica in inhibiting obesity. This experiment used 28 male Wistar strains in 2-3 months age that were divided into groups: group 1 (negative control, normal diet without Tamarindus indica), group 2 (positive control, obese diet without Tamarindus indica), group 3 (obese diet + Tamarindus indica 2700mg/kg BW), and group 4 (obese diet + Tamarindus indica 3600mg/kg BW). Measurement were performed in the first day after acclimization before treatment (day 8), and repeated weekly afterwards, ie at day 15, 22, 29, 36, and 43. Anova and Tukey Simultaneous statistics test were performed to see the differences in wight gain per week compared with the first week of study, then compared between groups.  Furthermore, a virtual screening that called insilico bioinformatics analyzes was performed to test the binding activity between quercetin and rutin (compounds in Tamarindus indica) with fatty acid synthase, an enzym that plays a role in de novo synthesis of fatty acids. Tamarindus indica was shown to significantly inhibit weight gain in rats with obese diet food (P=0.000), but differences dose of Tamarindus indica did not appear to have significant effect to inhibit obesity (P=0.321). The ability of Tamarindus indica is due to the compounds quercetin and rutin, where these two ingredients estimated to have the ability to inhibit fatty acid synthase with high strength.

Abstract

The side effect of Hormonal contraception especially DMPA injection and implant is the changes of menstrual cycle. The changes include amenorrhea, spotting, duration of menstruation, amount of the blood loss etc. 8 of 10 DMPA acceptor has amenorrhea and all of implant acceptor has prolonged period. This research aimed to study the differences changes in menstrual cycle between DMPA Injection and implant acceptor at Puskesmas Karangan, Kecamatan Karangan, Kabupaten Trenggalek. Using cross sectional design and 90 respondents, 45 from DMPA acceptor and 45 from implant acceptor. The result showed that there was differences in menstrual cycle between DMPA injection acceptor with implant acceptor with p = 0,006, CI 95%, contingency coeffisient 0,378. The changes of menstrual cycle lighter for implant acceptor because of differences kind of ingredient.

Abstract

In Indonesia, dengue fever is still common. This has caused many troubled people in Indonesia including Surabaya, East Java. Clinical signs of dengue start from mild illness to life-threatening shock syndrome. So it takes a development of a treatment to combat dengue fever. The purpose of this study is to see the prevalence of dengue fever in students. The prevalence of dengue fever at the University of Surabaya accounted for 17%, as we approached 81 people among them 14 were infected with dengue hemorrhagic fever. There were 42 (65%) people suffering from headaches, 19 (29%) joints, 26 (40%) muscle pain and 16 (25%) had abdominal pain, and from 64 among the 18-23 age group. The data obtained is helpful in determining the therapeutic approach to infections that appear. Furthermore, demographic factors such as age, gender, socioeconomic status with dengue virus transmission are also being considered.

Abstract

The healing of wounds is a natural process of the human body but often medicine is used, for example the use of spider silk. The purpose of this research is to know the effect of the use of spider (Menemerus Bivittatus) silk protein used topically for the healing of incision wounds in the inflammatory phase. This research is a laboratory experiment. The subjects of this research are 18 wistar rats (Rattus Norvegicus strain) that are treated in two different ways. The first is control (K1) with the use of normal saline and the second is treatment (Pl) with the use of spider silk protein topically using wound dressing. The selection of samples is done randomly using the simple random sampling. The hypothesis testing uses the Chi Square testing with α = 0.05. The results of this research shows that the use of spider silk protein topically effects the process of incision wound healing (0,005) in the inflammatory phase (0,000) on Wistar rats.

Abstract

The placenta is a joint organ of the uterus surface mother and fetus. One of cytokines of the placenta is IL-6 which is essential for normal placental development and successful pregnancy. Sgp130 binds Interleukin-6-sIL-6R complex, so Interleukin-6 signal cannot be passed on. Both factors play an important role in pre-eclampsia which has high levels of IL-6 and sgp130. They are expected to be suppressed by administration of C-phycocyanin. The aim of this study to prove effect of C-phycocyanin on sgp130 levels among wistar rats’ trophoblasts exposed to IL-6. The design of the study was Experiment, Post Test Only Control, analyse with One way Anova. The samples were 25 rats divided four treatment groups. Dose of C-Phycocyanin (10mg, 20mg, 40mg). The results significant difference between control and treatment group IL-6, IL-6 + CPC10, IL-6 + CPC20. But there was no significant difference between control group and IL-6 + CPC40, sig value. 0.214 (sig. <0.05). Conclusion. There is an effect of C-Phycocyanin on Sgp130 levels in wistar rats’ trophoblasts exposed to IL-6 at a dose of C-Phycocyanin 40mg.

Abstract

Chronic renal disease is a disorder of renal function or structure that lasts for more than three months, accompanied by a decrease in glomerular filtration rate. Decreasing of renal function monitoring is performed by measuring glomerular filtration rate, determining blood urea, creatinine, creatinine clearance, electrolytes, uric acid, blood gas analysis and tubular function. The Recent method for measuring glomerular filtration rate using inulin clearance, however, is not efficient. Further measurements of creatinine glomerular filtration rate were developed. Measurements of urea, creatinine and uric acid are currently using enzymatic methods of spectrophotometry, while electrolyte examination by selective ion electrode method. Blood gas analysis determined pH, PCO2, PO2, HCO3-, CO2 total, base excess and SO2. Examination of urine protein and urine sediments helps establish a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease
