Abstract

The field of Textual Criticism of the Bible has highlighted that various OT and NT manuscripts contain textual errors in the original apographs. These errors indicate a problem: in the face of various existing textual errors, does the Bible still have authority? Opponents of Biblical authority conclude that we cannot trust the text because of the serious nature of the textual problems. Proponents of Biblical authority take the opposite view and defend the authority of the Scriptures. Proponents argue that there is certainty regarding the meaning of the Bible despite its many textual errors. This is due to the fact that the textual changes do not significantly impact the meaning of the text. Additionally, the numerous textual variants of available manuscripts provide us with an inter-verifying process to ascertain the meaning of the text. Moreover, the impossibility of scribal conspiration signifies historical reference and value within the text. The certainty of the meaning of the text has implications for the certainty of biblical authority. Finally, the author concludes that though there are textual errors within the Bible they do not negate the authority of the Bible.

Abstract

When faced with the phenomena of human suffering the default of the evangelical community is to examine human suffering through the lens of God’s sovereignty and providence which are inevitable forces faced by human beings. An attitude of fate, which arises as a direct response to God’s absolute sovereignty, actually leads to a concept of practical fatalism. The close relationship between natural law and human responsibility is ultimately neglected. It is hoped that a study of C. S. Lewis’ concept of theodicy can provide a new paradigm for the Indonesian evangelical community as it pertains to the problem of human suffering. This new paradigm proffers an active and positive estimation of the role of natural law as general revelation underlying the phenomena of suffering by positing the idea about the natural context of human life and the idea of fixed and uniform natural laws as a key to understanding the phenomena of human suffering.

Abstract

For too long the Septuagint, the first translation of the Hebrew Old Testament, has been sidelined and not given a credible hearing in seeking to discern the text of the original autographs of the Old Testament which have been lost in antiquity. Even though that has been the case, the new direction in recent textual studies, which has focused on the meaning of the original autographs of the Old Testament, has recognized that the Septuagint has a significant contribution to make within this field of study. This position has been supported by Biblical scholars who have employed the Text Critical method in determining the authoritative text of the Old Testament. They employ the Text Critical method in their comparison of the Masoretic Text, the Samaritan Pentateuch, The Dead Sea Scrolls and most recently, the Septuagint to find traces of the original OT autographs.

Abstract

Form-critical studies in the ethical basis of Isaiah has reached an impasse. Many ethical injunctions in Isaiah 1-39 does not fit into either wisdom or legal categories according to form-critical approaches. This article will re-examine the ethical basis of Isaiah 1-39 by employing a literary-canonical approach.

Abstract

How should a contemporary reader understand the complexities of the early church? Many scholars utilize a religious studies perspective to understand the early church concluding that the church grew as a direct result (synthesis) of group conflicts (in particular, the Pauline and Petrine communities). This essay approaches the early church from a different paradigm. Using theological analysis, the author concludes that although the early church contained elements of diversity, she exhibits significant unity. The Catholic Epistles (the letters of James, Peter, John, and Jude) are independent letters that are interconnected by the Jerusalem tradition, and the theologies of these letters reflect the unique character of the early church. Therefore, it is important that NT scholars should give more attention to the Catholic Epistles so that the early church can be understood from a more constructive perspective.

Abstract

The Heidelberg Catechism reflects a rich heritage within the Church that adheres to the Reformed tradition. It contains a rich strain of doctrine pertaining to the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Explicitly, within the Heidelberg Catechism, the teaching regarding the doctrine of the Holy Spirit as a Member of the Godhead is found only in Question/Answer 53. Of course, this does not mean that the only teaching on the subject of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit within the Heidelberg Catechism is recorded in this section alone. The purpose of this essay is an attempt to conduct an analysis of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, specifically Q/A 53, from three different contexts: the historical setting which reflects the historical context in which the Heidelberg Catechism was formulated, a macro and micro textual analysis of Q/A 53 within the context of the Heidelberg Catechism, and finally, the relevancy of the document for the contemporary context, especially focusing upon the Indonesian context.

Abstract

The Cape Town Commitment is one of the important documents pertaining to the history of evangelicals today. Even though this document is important rarely is it discussed in the Indonesia context. Thus, this article will discuss the Cape Town Commitment within two social contexts in Indonesia; multiculturalism and the multicultural condition and with respect to the evident poverty and economic gap. This study results in ten specific suggestions (in both the indicative and the imperative) that can function as guidelines for evangelicals in the Indonesia context.

Abstract

Homosexuality, in this day and age, is not understood as a kind of behavior, but as a sexual orientation that emerges out of human identity and is beyond human will. As a result, people consider homosexuality to be a normal lifestyle and do not perceive of it as sinful behaviour. Evaluations, garnered from both biblical and theological perspectives, are examined to answer the complicated questions related to this topic and conclude that homosexuality is sin.

Abstract

On the one hand, every preacher who desires to experience the power of the Holy Spirit in the sermon will struggle to see “the anointing” of the Spirit. On the other, there are preachers who even afraid of experiencing that power in their sermon. What is a Spirit-anointed sermon? Why also are there preachers who are even afraid of that anointing power? And how does a preacher nurture his/her faith in the Holy Spirit to empower a sermon? This article attempts to answer those question.

Abstract

Kata-kata kunci: Teodisi, Soft-determinism, Kompatibilisme, Kedaulatan Allah, Masalah Kejahatan, Holocaust, Auschwitz, Teologi Proses, Pembelaan Kehendak Bebas, Teodisi Pembentukan Jiwa, Greater Good Theodicy, John Calvin, John Feinberg   English: Throughout the ages Christian theologians have attempted to understand, from a philosophical vantagepoint, the problem of evil. The Church Fathers as well as theologians during the era of the Reformation have offered a solution that argues from the basis of the greater good. However, solutions of that nature seem to ring hollow when one considers the magnitude and scope of the Holocaust (Auschwitz). In light of that historical reality traditional solutions to the problem of evil seem inadequate. Process theology attempts to overcome the impasse by restricting the attributes of God. The purpose of this article is to critically evaluate contemporary solutions to the problem of evil, especially process theology, as inadequate solutions. Further, to argue for the traditional positional argument of the greater good as offering a tenable solution. Keywords: Theodicy, Soft-determinism, Compatibilism, Sovereignty of God, Problem of Evil, Holocaust, Auschwitz, Process Theology, Free Will Defense, Soul-shaping Theodicy, Greater Good Theodicy, John Calvin, John Feinberg
