Abstract

Abstract : The Action Classroom Research is an attempt to improve the Seventh A Class students? skills in expressing Simple Descriptive Monologue at SMP Negeri 1 Air Kumbang, Banyuasin. This study used three cycleswith ICARE System through five stepswhich are Introduce, Connect, Apply, Reflect, and Extend. The data were taken from observation and questionnaire for qualitative data and individual assessment report for quantitative data. Finally, it was found that ICARE system could (1) improve the students? skill in expressing simple descriptive monologue, (2) improve the students spoken English with correct pronunciation, and (3) Improve the students? courage in expressing simple descriptive monologue.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to find out if the novel entitled The Chronicles of Narnia (Prince Caspian) by C. S. Lewis is the allegory base on Christian belief and the meaning of allegory found is stated on the Bible. The method used in writing this thesis is descriptive analysis method. The findings of this thesis is there are eight (8) characters taken and analyzed that had allegories and meaning of allegories out of 41 characters in the novel. From 8 characters taken and analyzed, there are 18 allegories found. 4 allegories from Caspian, 1 from Peter, 2 from Susan, 2 from Edmund, 4 from Lucy, 3 from Aslan, 1 from Trufflehunter and 1 from the Trees. The conclusion of this thesis is the all allegories found are as representation of characters and events base on Christian belief and the meaning of allegories found are stated on the Bible.

Abstract

Abstract:This research analyzed characters in the movie Alice Through The Looking Glass by using Vladimir Propp?s theory especially in seven spheres of action and thirty-one narrative functions. To conduct this research, the researcher used descriptive method. To analyze the data, the researcher classified the characters into seven spheres of action and classified the sequence into thirty-one narrative functions. The results of this research showed that there were six spheres of action that the researcher found there were villain, donor, helper, princess, dispatcher, and hero and seventeen narrative functions which appeared in the movie Alice Through The Looking Glass which were absentation, mediation, interdiction, beginning counteraction, departure, violation, reconnaissance, provision of magical agent, guidance, unrecognized arrival, transfiguration, villainy, victory, punishment liquidation of lack, return, and wedding.

Abstract

Abstract :Oral literature is one of the most important part in the existence of regional literature, including the province of South Sumatra. However, this type of literature began to be less enjoyed because it is considered outdated and not in accordance with the tastes of today's society. Not surprisingly, the number of its lovers began to decrease and leaving only the old people. This research highlights about oral literature Berejung owned by Besemah tribe of Pagaralam, South Sumatera which experienced the same thing. The aim is to see the dynamics of change or transition of the oral literature Berejung from the first to present form of presentation. Sources of data were obtained by using direct observation methods and interviews with related parties, such as speakers and art activists. The results of field research indicate that oral literature Berejung has undergone several transitions from spoken directly through the mouth, followed by the lute and the sole guitar and the last in a musical orchestra.

Abstract

Abstract: The objectives of this research were to find out the positive politeness strategy and factors influencing in the major characters? utterances. To conduct this research, the researcher used the descriptive method. To analyze the data, the researcher classified fifteen positive politeness strategies and factors influencing the use of positive politeness strategy in the utterances. The result of the study shows that there were 12 positive politeness strategies in the major characters? utterances. Then, Three strategies were not found in the utterances. Namely Joke; Give (or ask for) reasons; Assume or assert reciprocity. The influencing factors found in the film there were 15 payoffs, 16 social distances, 5 the sizes of imposition and 2 relative powers. The utterances of four major characters that indicate positive politeness strategies. They were: Oz, Theodora, Evanora, and Finley.

Abstract

Abstrak Kompetensi penerjemahan merupakan pengetahuan dan kemampuan yang dimiliki penerjemah untuk menghasilkan terjemahan dengan kualitas yang baik. Kompetensi penerjemahan salah satunya meliputi latar belakang pendidikan dan atau pelatihan penerjemahan yang pernah ditempuh penerjemah. Walaupun begitu, banyak penerjemah di Indonesia yang tidak memiliki latar belakang pendidikan dan atau pelatihan penerjemahan. Berkaitan dengan hal tersebut, penelitian ini menganalisis hubungan antara kompetensi penerjemahan, khususnya latar belakang pendidikan dan atau pelatihan penerjemahan, dengan kualitas hasil terjemahan para penerjemah. Dari analisis studi pustaka yang telah dilakukan terhadap beberapa penelitian terdahulu mengenai korelasi antara kompetensi penerjemahan dengan kualitas terjemahan, peneliti menemukan bahwa kompetensi penerjemahan mempengaruhi kualitas terjemahan yang dihasilkan penerjemah. Kata Kunci: Kompetensi Penerjemahan, Kualitas Terjemahan, Latar Belakang Pendidikan dan atau Pelatihan Penerjemahan   Abstract Translation competencies are knowledge and abilities owned by a translator to produce good quality translations. One of the translation competencies includes the educational background and / or translation training that have been taken by the translator. Nevertheless, there are many translators in Indonesia who do not have the educational and / or translation training backgrounds. With this in mind, this research analyzes the relationship between the translation competencies, especially the educational background and / or translation training, with the quality of the translation results. From the analysis of literature studies that have been done by several previous researchers regarding to the correlations between the translation competencies and the quality of translations, the writer found that the translation competencies affected the quality of translations produced by the translator.  Keywords: Translation Competencies, Quality of Translations, Educational and / or Translation Training

Abstract

  Abstract :This study is conducted to find out the pronunciation errors made by the first semester students of English Education Department in STKIP CBN. In conducting the data, the researcher gave the pre-test to the informants, then; the researcher recorded the performances and transcribed the data. The secondary data was gathered from the interview. Based on the data analysis The researcher counted that there are nine types of errors pronunciation made by the subjects. The first error is the subjects substituted a vowel /?/ and six consonants /kj/,/t?/,/?/,/d?/ and /?/ with Indonesian sounds. The second error is the subjects substituted some English vowels into Indonesian vowel. The third error is word cognates cases. The fourth is language interference. The fifth is pronouncing the silent consonant /h/. The sixth error is Deleting or omitting some consonants that appeared at the end of some English words. The seventh error is the subjects pronounced the silent consonant /t/ in the word ?often?. The eighth error is the subjects added the consonant /r/ at the word, that word doesn?t required the consonant /r/. The last error is some subjects seemed to generalize the pronunciation of the past tense morpheme which is ended by a bound morpheme /ed/. This research is founded that there are three causes of students? pronunciation error made in speaking English. The first is an interference errors, the second is an intra lingual errors and the last is a developmental error.

IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH HERRINGBONE TECHNIQUE TO THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA LTI-IGM PALEMBANG   Reno, M.Pd The lecturer of Bina Darma University Jalan Jenderal Ahmad Yani No.3 Palembang Sammuri92@gmail.com     Abstract: The Research is an attempt to improve the eleventh class students? skills in reading comprehension through herringbone technique at SMA LTI-IGM. This study used pre-test and post-test of experimental and control group. The writer used a written test to collect the data, the writer gave 45 minutes with 40 questions to 40 students in the pre-test and post-test, the class is taken two; experimental class and control class, the result of pre-test and post-test was analyzed by using t-test formula to find out whether there is any significant difference between those two groups. The F test formula showed there was significant difference between students? average score in the experimental group post-test and students? average score in the control group post-test.         Abstrak : Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman bacaan di SMA LTI-IGM. Penelitian ini mengunakan pre-tes dan post-tes pada group experiment dan control. Penulis mengunakan tes tertulis dalam pengumpulan data dengan 40 pertanyaan di 45 menit. Data penelitian di analisa menggunakan t-test formula untuk mendapatkan perbedaaan yang signifikan terhadap dua group. Hasil dari formula F tes menunjukan bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan terhadap rata-rata nilai siswa pada grup experimen dan grup kontrol.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes appeared due to the awareness that general English course was not suitable for the learners? need, especially in higher education. In teaching  ESP, the materials are focused on the learners? needs or their specific fields of study and it is assumed that they have basic language skills of general English. The purpose of this study was to analyze the challenges that arise in teaching English for Specific Purpose (ESP) in higher education. This article is aimed at describing some of the learning problems esp. A lot of the problems  from the teachers, materials production, the error of learner assessment. In order to minimize these effects, some solutions are offered. The solutions are increase the ability of lecturers ,materials development, and the course evalution.

Abstract

This study objectives were to find out the influence of the England political history and how Swift used the symbol of satire to criticize political situation. Qualitative method with descriptive approach was used in this study. Techniques for collecting the data were done through following: reading and observing the novel of Gulliver?s Travels, scanning and finding the information of some history of English Literature books and history books, and looking for the information related to the study of the literary theory books to get theories and references as supporting research in this study. M.H. Abrams Theory was used in finding and analyzing this study. The result of the study showed that satire was used by Swift to criticize political and social situation. It was reflected in the story of Gulliver?s Travels. For example, Swift criticize the British government by using the Lilliputians.
