Abstract

ABSTRACT Kudat is located in the North part of the island of Borneo, with land area of 1,287.2 km2 or 130,787 ha. Out of the overall total area, 25% or 33,307 ha of area are gazetted under Forest Reserve. Most of the Kudat coastline area is patches of mangrove forest. A total of 19,507 hectares of the total mangroves in the Kudat district have been gazetted as permanent forest reserve under class-V Mangrove Forest Reserve. Mangroves play many important functions such as physical protection to the coastline, important breeding ground of marine life and nurseries, source of socio-economy activity to the local people, natural habitat for the living organisms, home to wide range of flora and fauna. Another function is they provide opportunities for the development for eco-tourism. Some locations in Kudat, which are of high potential for tourism development, are Kg. Sikuati, Simpang Mangayau, Sg. Ranggu, Pulau Banggi, Pulau Malawali and Pulau Balembangan. In 2005, about 2,440 ha or 0.8% of the Mangrove forest reserve in Sabah has been lost mainly due to land conversion for people’s settlement. As for Kudat, exploited area recorded are as follow; settlement/urban development (500 ha), aquaculture (15 ha), agriculture and infrastructure (13 ha) - power supply way leave, pipeline, and common tower. Illegal squatters involved about 2 ha and land use conflict of mangrove forest reserve in Kudat were lost to agricultural conversion due to uncoordinated and technical discrepancies of boundaries on the ground. Some challenges in mangrove conservation are, currently there is no management plan prepared for the management of mangroves in Kudat. The management of mangrove area thus far is focusing on protecting the gazetted area under permanent forest reserve under Class V – mangrove forest, gradually by the forest district. Apart from mangroves in PFR, there are also some scattered Stateland mangroves which are not quantified, monitored and protected under any legislation. Considering their locations, roles and functions, steps must be taken to gazette existing mangroves inside estuaries and lagoons as Permanent Forest Reserve (PFR). The apparent of boundaries between state land and Mangrove Forest on the ground are vital to be carried out by the authority. Important effort to better manage the Kudat mangroves is carrying out nourishment and planting activities in existing mangroves. Other challenges are to involve the local communities to conserve mangroves areas, especially thus living nearby the mangrove forest. This paper highlights the status of mangrove, to emphasize the important function of mangrove, and to distinguish the threat and challenge of mangrove conservation in Kudat district. Keywords: Mangrove forest, status and function, threat and challenges, conservation, Kudat.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of this research are to know the value of adsorption and the influence of microcide using dyeing method against the intensity of blue mushroom attack on the rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis Muell.Arg.) in the axial direction, the base (P), the middle (T) and the end (U). The expected benefit is to be an input in finding alternative use of preservative composition that is able to suppress the growth rate of blue mushroom so as to improve the quality of rubber wood usage. The results showed that the value of microcide preservative adsorption on wood has a tendency of increasing value with increasing concentration of microcide preservative and largest in the concentration of 1% Microcide preservative by 2.11 g/cm2. The calculation result of the intensity of blue mushroom attack on rubber wood at Microcide concentration of 1% is 5,53% including the classification is not meaningful, so it is effective to prevent blue fungus attack. The result of the measurement of the decrease of the rubber wood water content per week has a tendency of decreasing value from week I to week V. The decrease of the water content of timber that occurs almost uniformly for each level of Microcide concentration per week, so that in week V the water content of wood ranges from 18% - 19, 73%. The fresh water content of rubber wood used in this research ranged 61.34% - 84.67%, with the condition of the water content allows the fungal attack on rubber wood. The intensity of blue mushroom attack between week I - IV at moisture content between 69,16% - 27,50% shows optimum blue fungus growth, while under condition of fiber saturation point entering week V (18,86%) mushroom growth value is very small. Further research on the preservation of rubber wood by dipping method using Microcide EC preservative on wood resistance to other types of fungi. Keywords: Adsorption value, attack intensity, microcide, rubber wood.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Jelutung kapur (Dyera lowii Hock) and jelutung sanaman (Dyera costulata) are species that grow well at the peat swamp forest in Canal of Taruna, Kalampangan, Palangka Raya City. Aim of this research was to compare the latex yield between jelutung kapur (Dyera lowii Hock) and jelutung sanaman (Dyera costulata) at the peat swamp forest in Kalampangan. The research was done using factorial design with two factors, i.e. peat thickness (4 m and 5 m) and diameter class of the trees. Variables of the research were diameter (dbh) and height of 24 jelutung kapur and 18 jelutung sanaman. Data were collected each month as long as 11 months with considering the weather condition, i.e. precipitation and temperature. Research result show that there is irreversibility between precipitation vs temperature to latex yield. The more of precipitation so the higher of temperature that cause the reduction of latex yield. According BNT test, the highest latex yield is gotten from jelutung kapur with diameter class of >24 cm that grow at the site with the thickness of 4 m, meanwhile the lowest latex yield is gotten from jelutung sanaman with diameter class of < 24 cm that grow at the site with the thickness of 5 m. Average latex yield of jelutung kapur is 363,63 ml/extract/tree/month. Keywords: Diameter class, latex yield, peat thickness, precipitation, temperature.

Abstract

ABSTRACK Patterns of community life tend to back to nature including the drugs utilization. They generally use medicinal plants (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds) without knowing its active chemical compounds and partly morphologically unfamiliar also. This research was conducted to identify the characteristics of medicinal plants (general, environment, habitat and morphology of medicinal plants) through observation in the field and to know the content of active compounds (secondary metabolites) prosfective medicinal plants that be used by the community of Natai Sedawak Village by doing phytochemical testing in laboratory. Data analysis is done descriptively qualitative and quantitative in the form of tabulation and picture. The results of observation showed that the characteristics of medicinal plants in Natai Sedawak village are tree, shrub, herb (terna) and liana, with single and compound leaf composition, cylindrical trunks except tapus and Loranthus sp. They grow in swamp forest with altitude namely 17 to 25 meters above sea level and soil pH between 2.60 to 3.85. Based on the results of phytochemical analysis, medicinal plants contained secondary metabolite compounds that consisting tannin (polifenol), alkaloid, saponin, flavonoids, steroids and terpenoids that scattered in plant organs as at the roots, stems, leaves, and fruit. Keywords : Drug growth, phytochemical analysis, Natai Sedawak Village.
