Abstract

This paper presents an introduction for understanding Christian education holistically. The discussion of Christian education to follow covers not only Christian Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Kristen, PAK) in the context of schools and Congregation Membership Development (Pembinaan Warga Gereja, PWG), but also higher education contexts where instruction is oriented fundamentally according to Christian faith. Emphasized, as well, is the inseparable connection between Christian education for the formation and development of faith, spirituality, and character, and the formation and development of knowledge (academia) and life skills.

Abstract

This article aims to map the polarization in Indonesia between Christian Education (or: Christian Religious Education) as it takes place within the domains of church and of school. Within the ecclesial arena, Christian education (Pendidikan Kristiani/PK) is often associated with the activity of teaching children. On the other hand, within the setting of a school, PK is often associated with a course of study assigned to students—one that mostly emphasizes the filling of cognitive gaps for the students yet (intentionally) ignores the affective and psychomotor domain that is integral for instruction. By examining this polarization, I argue that the polarizing divide between PK as implemented in a school and PK as implemented in the church can be overcome by virtue of the fact that both school and church are learning spaces for PK. This article is divided into three parts. The first will demonstrate certain misunderstandings about PK in the context of school and of church that lead to polarization. The second part shows how PK is presently practiced in the context of Indonesia’s churches and schools. Based on descriptions in this second part, the final section will offer a number of basic principles, in an effort to bridge the gap between PK as it takes place in school and in church.

Abstract

Fragmentation constitutes a classic phenomenon for Christian education in various contexts, one that is not easily addressed despite the many attempts leaders and thinkers in Christian education have explored. The ongoing fragmentation indicates lack of a comprehensive vision that might unify the direction of Christian education in various contexts. In this article, the author proposes that a vision for Christian education be based on the concept of calling as understood from the framework of a biblical metanarrative, to provide a unifying trajectory for Christian education within various contexts (family, school, church, parachurch, and seminaries) by which such efforts can be seen as complementary and synergistic. The need for collaboration and synergy among various and widely differing educational contexts is illustrated by a certain qualitative study that traces the process of formation as experienced by a number of Christian professionals in ways that enable them to live out their vocational work as the Lord’s call (vocation) as well as to dedicate their lives according to the interest of others. This need for collaboration and synergy also finds confirmation in the theory of human development ecology as proposed by developmental psychology expert, Urie Bronfenbrenner.

Abstract

Discussion concerning how the Scriptures form the basis for growth in the spiritual life of believers figures quite centrally in the thought and theology of Origen of Alexandria (185-250 CE). Origen encourages every Christian to read the Scriptures for the purpose of fostering a refinement of the soul and for the shaping of a spiritual life within the believer’s own self, in order for them to continue in growth toward attaining perfect maturity of life that is to be found in their communion with Christ. To achieve that goal, Origen asserts, the reading of Scripture must be carried out within a framework of divine pedagogy.

Abstract

This article explores the importance of decolonizing Christian religious education in Indonesia, especially in churches that were established during Dutch colonialism, by engaging in an expressly postcolonial and decolonial approach. After briefly tracing and criticizing the long history of Western colonialism concerning educational practice, this paper presents a variegated rationale connecting the content, relations, and methods within education in the present moment with those of the past—such that education today be seen as reflecting traces of the oppressive and colonizing education of yesteryear. The alternative to this is decolonization, by which a decolonial imagination attends that relational space of teaching-learning in order to transform and liberate Christian religious education in the postcolonial context of Indonesia. In this imagination, there is no body/mind dualism nor sacred/profane binary, and God is present to meet all as Liberator.

Abstract

This article attempts to conceptualize the notion of ‘public sphere’ from the perspectives of Reformed theology and religious studies. This construction proceeds using a largely forgotten theological concept put forth by Calvin, namely the theater of God’s glory, in tandem with Ninian Smart’s phenomenological scaffold of the seven dimensions of religion. Through this constructive act, the author intends to demonstrate that Calvin’s concept of the theater of God’s glory can become a kind of ‘public sphere’ by means of an integration of thought with the aid of religious studies.

Abstract

Levinas and Ricoeur share a concerted attention for the Other. Each bases his thought upon the understanding that philosophy ought primarily be construed as ethics, with a political dimension able to transform life unto justice. However, each also approaches the task of justice differently. Levinas adopts an asymmetric ethic that I should do justice to the poor, the stranger, the marginalized and the orphaned, yet without expecting anything in return. For him, such responsibility precedes one’s being. On the other hand, Ricoeur adopts a symmetrical and reciprocal ethics, where the praxis of a good and just life resembled collaboration, where each person contributes ideas and efforts to promote that very same good and just life. Ricoeur likewise sounds an ethical call for justice within institutions, such as the nation-state that becomes a vehicle for collaborate efforts toward justice. Asymmetrical as well as symmetrical ethical callings signal equally vital elements for the construction of a contextual political theology in Indonesia. This article highlights two crucial themes in fair economic behavior and religiously based communalism. Within the frame of a democratic nation-state, the communalistic nature of Pancasila can serve as a means for political theologizing that shifts the orientation from center to periphery.

Abstract

In Timor, the traditional healing practices of mnane (a Healer or healing woman) are alleged as “shamanism.” All the same, this accusation originates from area church as religious institution that had been founded upon Calvinistic values. What is sadder still, Healers are labeled superstitious, irrational, and profane. Such accusations marginalize and wound their dignity as women. The theological question is whether the source of such healing power would have caused the church to construct theological assumptions that would be so androcentric, rationalistic, and supremely concerned with accuracy. In this study, I would argue that the church must construct a theology that is truly born-of and favorable-toward women, as it also ushers Healers into the hospitality of the church-as-space for dialogue, partnership, and empowerment. Through the feminist approach of Mery Kolimon, the inspirational Teologi Rakyat (grassroots theology) of John Campbell-Nelson, and Trinitarian theological imagery, I urge that traditional Healers deserve enfranchisement and inclusion in the fellowship and friendship of the church as both form and function of the ‘Church's sacramental’ for the work of empowerment and healing.

Abstract

This article proposes an imaginative constructive theology the membali puang in Rambu Solo' [Toraja funeral rites]. The soteriological notion of the Aluk Todolo [Way of the Ancestors] assumes that humans at first were divine beings and would eventually return [membali] to being divine, puang. I will situate membali puang in dialogue with the notion of theōsis from the tradition of Eastern Orthodoxy, as exemplified in the work of Vladimir Lossky. He argues that participation in Trinitarian life occurs only in the divine energy. Therefore, in an imaginative way, I propose that membali puang as theōsis enjoys a similar character of being participatory, communitarian, and eschatological.
