Abstract

This study aims at analysing conventional indirectness strategies on request used by British English speakers as shown in spoken British National Corpus (BNC). Conventional indirect strategy is often rated as the most polite expression of politeness. In this case, male and female obviously have different strategies for making the request, which may be influenced by some factors. A qualitative approach was employed to conduct this study since the data are the utterances produced by male and female speakers in spoken BNC. The study revealed that there were 187 utterances that contain Conventional Indirectness Strategies on request used by male and female speakers in spoken BNC. Ability conditions was the strategy of conventional indirect request that mostly used by the male and female speakers. Then, the three factors (i.e. gender, age, and social class) have an effect and significant role on the speaker’s choice of strategies employed by British English speakers. As this study is focused on the indirect request strategies, thus it is suggested to the next researchers who are interested in the same study could be expected to conduct the indirect request strategies by adding more factors.

Abstract

Technology in informal language learning is inevitably in this digital era since it offers opportunities and brings positive impacts on English language learners. Some related studies are concerned with a particular approach. Therefore, this study looks at a broader lens to investigate individuals' differences in developing a second language, and to what extent technology contributes to their second language acquisition by employing the transdisciplinary framework of Douglas Fir Group (2016). This case study involved two participants, and the data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that individual differences in learning English are influenced by social interaction (micro), environment (meso), and belief (macro). Technology is utilized not only as a medium of learning English but also as an identity construction. How ideology and technology are interrelated is further discussed.

Abstract

This study tries to shed a light on whether politeness strategies used in YouTube comment sections’ online discussion are contagious. Particularly, it explores the politeness strategies used in comments and replies from the three most popular videos in 2018 of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” YouTube channel. By using a qualitative design with computer - mediated discourse analysis approach, this study confirms that politeness strategies used in the comment sections are contagious. It is also revealed that impolite strategies dominate the whole discussions even in funny content and the level of impoliteness increases as the degree of disagreement gets higher.

Abstract

This study sheds light on how Ma, the female character in Emma Donoghue’s Room negotiates her roles as a mother of a five-years-old Jack while living inside a constraining room built by Nick, her kidnapper. It particularly focuses on how Ma attempts to re-define her motherhood within built and discursive spaces that Nick constructs. The study employs the concepts of Sarah Ruddick on maternal thinking and Marsha Marotta’s MotherSpace. Marrota delineates two spatial aspects contributing to shape mother’s subjectivity; built spaces and discursive spaces. Built space is the 11x11m room representing Nick’s authority. Nick also partly constructs the discursive space within the room. The finding shows that Ma is able to create her own discursive space as her effort of conforming her motherhood, within the constraining built space. Ma successfully performs her sense of motherhood – such as providing him physical needs like nutritious food and nurturing his cognitive development.

Abstract

Authorship analysis is one of the areas lies within forensic linguistics where the main task is to investigate the characteristics of a text in terms of its authorship. Specifically, authorship attribution examines the possibility of an author for having written the text by analyzing the author's other works. This experimental research addresses two problems: which author writes which text (using a closed task authorship attribution) and who writes each text (using an open task of authorship attribution). In doing so, this research uses R to do statistical computing employing both stylo() and classify() functions. Based on carried out experiments with 1-grams as a fixed variable, it is concluded that SVM algorithm may be best used in doing closed task authorship attribution for its 100% consistency, whereas for the open task k-NN algorithm may be best used since it reaches 94% consistency. In addition to open class task, stylo() function may perform better than classify() function since stylo() function provides results closer to the actual answer. As the legal system often challenges authorship analysis for not having a valid methodology, analyzing styles using stylometry and measuring the styles computationally may help forensic linguists to provide an adequate analysis for the legal system. Scientifically this research provides a framework of how to do authorship analysis computationally while practically it is projected can be used as a tool to detect plagiarism.

Abstract

This study investigates the application of Critical Discourse Analysis to the body care advertisements. In this study, the focus is on the discourse and the text of advertisement which create the ideological concept of beauty. The theory used is Fairclough’s three dimensional framework which concentrates on the textual features, discursive practice, and discourse as social practice. The discourses of body care advertisements which are analyzed are from three brands; Oriflame, Wardah and Nivea. Methodologically, descriptive qualitative is used in this study as the research design because the purpose of this study is to provide a deep analysis of the data. The findings reveal that the use of adjectives has two main functions, to describe the product and to describe the result after using the product. In addition, the presence of the verbs has function to describe the work and the quality of the products advertised. Furthermore, the most pronouns used in the advertisements is “your” which has function to directly point at the reader so the reader will fell engaged to the advertisement. In discursive techniques the finding shows there are nine techniques used to promote the products advertised. They are using natural resources ingredients or by giving clinical test proof, exposure of the existing content, self-representations, unrealistic representations through the exaggeration language, puffery which contain the discourse which is subjective without giving credible evidence, the use of emotive words, celebrity endorsement, the simple discourse used and the last is by offering discount sale on the product advertised. It is also found that the ideological concept of beauty is emerged by the limitation of the concept beauty on the discourse and image of beauty advertisements. The concept of beauty is divided into 3, the concept of eyes, ideal skin, and ideal lip.

Abstract

This research is conducted based on two purposes; they are to identify the types of expressive speech act found in the statuses of the Facebook users, and to explain the modes of expressive utterance used in the statuses. Therefore, the data source is the social network that is Facebook and the data are the statuses of the Facebook users. The data are collected by using observational method, followed by non-participant observational technique and taking-note technique. The data analysis is based on pragmatic identity method proposed by Sudaryanto (2015) which is also supported by the theory of the types of expressive speech act by Ronan (2015), and theory about the modes of utterance from Alwi, et al (2000). The analysis result shows that there are fourteen types of expressive speech act in the statuses. They are the expression of agreement, disagreement, apology, gratitude, sorrow (sadness), exclamation (complaint), volition (hope), anger, disappointment, encouragement, satire, annoyance, pride, and congratulation. Meanwhile, the modes of expressive speech act that are used consist of declarative mode, interrogative mode, and exclamative mode. The importance of this research is to reveal or show that there is something else the Facebook users want to say behind their statuses. Sometimes, they do not really state what they mean in their statuses. They use indirect way and there lies the use of expressive speech act which can be stated in different way.

Abstract

It is believed that proverbs from each nation reflect the nation’s thoughts and characters. Based on the relationship between human conceptualization and language reflected in proverbs, then this study attempts to examine Indonesian proverb and English proverb by using a cognitive semantics approach. The data are taken from Indonesian proverb and English proverb containing api or “fire” word as it is one of the natural symbols of human life. Furthermore, based on the comparison of 7 Indonesian proverbs and 8 English proverbs containing api or “fire” word, the results of the study show that there are two categories created: first, proverbs in the same form and meaning including the risk mapping, anger and work; second, proverbs from the same form but different meanings.

Abstract

The current research aims to scrutinize the generality and idiosyncrasy of verb formation mirrorred in Madurese language. The language has been easily understood and intuitively acknowledged for native speakers. Since the (ir)regularity, changing a word in shapes and functions, also demonstrates its linguistic facet, the approach from morphological explanation becomes crucial. This is to provide background information for those especially interesting in learning the language and or simply making even the native speakers aware of. Furthermore, it would be beneficial in a way that the proper uses both syntactically and semantically are appropriate. This employed the explanatory research, collecting the data from WA (WhatsApp) group. All members are indigenous of Madura and thus the group facilitates the extensive use of the given language. By identifying, capturing and classifying the required data, they were subsequently analyzed from the proposing morphological underpinnings. The findings of this research demonstrate that prefix a- and –e are considered to be bound morphemes as they cannot stand alone. They function to form a verb in active voice and a verb in passive voice. The generality takes place. The idiosyncrasy is, however, also phenomenal.

Abstract

The integration between the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and the pragmatic aspect of the metaphor usage has resulted in the emergence of the Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) approach to examine metaphors in public discourse. By applying this approach, the present study explores the types of metaphors in Ustadz Hanan Attaki (henceforth UHA) and Ustadz Abdul Somad (Henceforth UAS) both English and Indonesian speech corpora on economic discourses and their possible latent ideologies. The results also indicate that some (linguistic) realizations of conceptual mappings of the metaphors in UHA and UAS’ corpus are used to evoke the emotion and the soul of their audiences. Further, the current study also shows that both UHA and UAS share similar collectivism/jama’ah ideological values manifested through the journey and battle metaphors dataset.
