Abstract

The rapid development of education in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 in various sectors of life in science and technology is a source of its own challenges for a teacher in the learning process, especially for preparing the teaching materials. This study aims to develop an E-Magazine that is valid, practical, and effective. This study applied Research and Development method with the ADDIE model. The subjects for this research are 32 students of SMAN 9 Banjarmasin in the academic year of 2021/2022. The trial implementation consisted of individual, small group, and limited trials. Data collection techniques were validation sheets, readability and response questionnaires, and test and non-test assessments while the data analysis used descriptive analysis. The results showed that the validity of the e-magazine with an average score of 4.6 categories was very valid in terms of content, presentation, language, and media aspects. The effectiveness which was seen based on N-gain for students' conceptual understanding was 0.67 (moderate) and learning motivation was 0.45 (moderate). This study shows that the use of e-magazines with SEL approach on colloid material in context of local wisdom is effective, and can be used in chemistry learning. Implications of SEL can help the growth of problem solvers, and collaborative academics is positively synergized with SEL and local wisdom (CASEL-LW) so that students can understand and solve the problems better.

Abstract

Research related to learning treatment to train creative thinking skills has been frequently done. However, this has become a concern for teachers to assess which ‘learning treatment’ is better in developing students’ creative thinking skills. This study aims to analyze the most effective treatment in improving students’ creative thinking skills on science and mathematics concepts, based on data sources from international journal articles. The meta-analysis was conducted using CMA software and involving 21 published papers in international journal indexed by Scopus and or WOS. Data analysis was carried out by comparing the effect size values from the research results. According to the results of the meta-analysis, the average effect size data obtained with the learning model reached 1.075, the learning approach reached 1.627, and the learning media reached 1.575. Then based on the analysis, three ‘treatments’ were found that were considered as the most effective based on the effect size comparison, namely the PBL model with an effect size of 3.765, the STEM approach with an effect size of 0.90, and the use of interactive multimedia with an effect size of 0.83. The finding of this research stated that the PBL model is the most effective treatment to train students’ creative thinking skills. The results of this study provide views for science and mathematics educators to consider to use PBL (learning model), STEM/AM (learning approach), and technology-based learning media to train creative thinking.

Abstract

The development of students' creativity should be adjusted to their talents so that teachers at schools need to have guidelines for mapping children's talents. This study is conducted to develop and assess the E-module on mapping the talents of elementary students in Aceh. The Design Development Research (DDR) research uses the Alessi and Trolip instructional design model involving 3 experts, 9 PGMI lecturers, and 15 MI teachers in three PTKINs in Aceh. The research instrument is a questionnaire that is analyzed by alpha and beta testing using descriptive analysis. The results of the alpha and beta assessments show that the mean assessment of MI experts, lecturers, and teachers is at a high stage (more than 4.0). Thus, it can be concluded that the talent mapping E-module for elementary students is suitable to use in elementary schools. For further research, it should be able to develop a talent mapping E-module for the high school level and able to be developed using learning technology in the form of E-learning.

Abstract

This research is stimulated by the low metacognitive ability of students in Indonesia. The real impact of students' low metacognitive ability is that they are unable to monitor themselves and do not know the nature of their learning goals. The use of the integrated E-LKPD (e-worksheet) with SQ4R learning strategies (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Reflect, Review) has the potential to be an alternative choice to train students' metacognitive ability. This study aims to determine the validity of the product, and product characteristics as well as to train the metacognition ability’s profile of each student. This type of research is development research with the 4D model development. The integrated E-LKPD with SQ4R strategy has the characteristics; integrated with SQ4R strategy, train metacognitive abilities, attractive E-LKPD, flexible E-LKPD, interactive E-LKPD, and E-LKPD includes general requirements for LKPD. The results of the study prove that the integrated E-LKPD with the SQ4R strategy is valid with an average V index of 0.95 in the material aspect and 0.94 in the media aspect with the V table of 0.87. The results of the MAI questionnaire obtain a metacognitive profile of 85.25 with well-developed metacognition criteria. Thus, the developed E-LKPD has been tested to be valid and, therefore, can be used to train students' metacognitive ability.

Abstract

Teachers’ language intervention can play a key role in helping students in the classroom interaction to learn a foreign language. In this paper, we discuss the teacher’s language intervention for phonological aspects in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. We used a qualitative descriptive approach with a phenomenological research design. As the data, we recorded the language exchanges between the students and their teachers at the fifth year of a Primary School (Sekolah Dasar) in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. We categorized three types of teachers’ language intervention, i.e. focalization, correction, and solicitation. Focalization intervention is manifested by the production of a lexical element. The intervention was observed in three situations, namely when reading familiar and unfamiliar English short stories, and playing a game with cards containing English words with their respective pictures, introduced in the stories. The teachers’ language interventions were coded in relation to phonological aspects, i.e. phoneme, syllable, and rhyme. The results show that there are 159 interventions in total. The teachers’ language interventions have the number of speech turns and the duration of the interactions varied in accordance with the context of situation, the Speech-turns mostly occur in reading unfamiliar English stories either for focalization, correction, or solicitation. Thus, this study concluded that teachers intervened more often in reading time of unfamiliar English stories, used focalization more frequently in the intervention, and utilized syllables more preferably as the focus in the intervention. As the implication, variability in the frequency and nature of interventions by the teachers could be at the origin of the differences observed in the performance of students.

Abstract

This study aim to seek the relationship between self-effort and e-learner success, either directly or through self-regulation. This type of research is quantitative. The research method used is an exploratory survey. Primary data were obtained from questionnaires filled out by 923 Social Science Education students at all State Islamic Universities in Indonesia. 11 State Islamic Universities with a Social Science Education program participated in this research. The direct test uses Ordinary Least Square (OLS), while the indirect effect is tested using the Sobel test. The results of this study can prove that self-effort has a direct and indirect positive influence on e-learner success through self-regulation. Students with high self-effort will be able to improve their self-regulation, impacting their e-learning success. This evidence shows that e-learning requires students' independence to succeed academically. This research provides a theoretical contribution to the development of e-learning theory. Students in online learning success need self-effort and self-regulation because, in online learning, students are required to be more active than in direct learning in class. The author recommends further research to expand other variables that affect the success of e-learning with different models and theories, such as expectation confirmatory theory, technology acceptance model, intention to continue using LMS, course and information quality.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the validity, reliability, scale understanding, item difficulties, and bias items of the instrument for analyzing the needs of biology teachers regarding the assessment of creative thinking skills using the RASCH model. The instrument was modified based on the indicators of divergent and convergent thinking processes in the scientific learning stages integrated with the dimensions of creative thinking skills by using ADDIE research model. The research participants comprised of 104 participants from the Solo Raya area, those of whom were 64 Senior High School Biology teachers and 40 Junior High School Science teachers. The research instrument used inventory with a Likert scale of 1 to 4. The instrument validity, reliability, scale understanding, item difficulties, and bias items were analyzed by applying the RASCH model using Winstep 3.73. The research results showed that the overall validity was acceptable, and the item validity did not need improvement. Overall reliability was very good, and the item reliability was excellent. Rating scale analysis showed respondents had understood the Linkert scale of 1 to 4 well. Based on the item difficulties results of the teachers' responses, it was found that there had not been any teachers who evaluated the indicators of creative thinking skills by using writings or pictures in problem-solving assessment. The bias test results on the instrument items indicated that five items could potentially be biased due to age difference, and the two others were due to gender type. Therefore, the development of assessment instruments for creative thinking skills with scientific and social problem-solving based assignments, as well as writing and visual expressions, is required.

Abstract

Despite the sufficient amount of language textbook analysis studies that have been conducted, little attention focused on grammar exercises analysis presented in the Indonesian junior high school English textbooks that facilitated the students to make meaning where functional grammar principles were adopted. This current study nuanced education artifacts analysis. The researchers intended to reveal to what extent the English grammar exercises present functional grammar exercises. Moreover, The study provided a practical suggestion to teachers, textbook developers, and language practitioners to revise and include the functional grammar approach in designing English grammar exercises. Anchored into critical document study, this study focused to find the representation of functional grammar exercises portrayed in an English language textbook where the mandated English language curriculum endorses genre-based and text-based language pedagogy in an Indonesian secondary school context. Two analytical tools were combined (i.e. transitivity analysis and critical discourse study) to reveal the existing English grammar exercises. The findings present a total of 88 English grammar exercises found in the textbook. However, 28 English grammar exercises indicated activities for the student to make meaning. The result provided a critical suggestion for grammar exercises revision that facilitates students to make meaning and understanding the social practices of the language. However, this study only provided a textbook analysis, further studies possibly focus on action studies where the functional grammar exercises were implemented in classroom activities.

Abstract

Work engagement is essential for non-formal education teachers, including Taman Pendidikan Al-Quran (TPA) teachers. Work engagement will improve the work performance of TPA teachers. The religiosity of TPA teachers is expected to play a key role in increasing work engagement. This study aims to examine the contribution of religiosity toward work engagement. The hypothesis proposed in this study is that religiosity can predict the level of work engagement. The subjects of this study are the TPA teachers, consisting of 84 females and 70 males who have a year of teaching experience minimally. The instrument used to collect the data is the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) which has been modified, and the religiosity scale as well. Data are analyzed by simple regression analysis. Religiosity plays a role in 30.4 % of teachers’ work engagement. In addition, the dimension of religiosity has the most significant role in the work engagement of the TPA teachers. The result shows that religiosity can predict work engagement for the TPA teachers.
