Abstract

The textual interpretation of the Qur’an has been considered as the most valid and authoritative method in interpreting the Qur’an. However, this method has many weaknesses because it can produce intolerant and exclusive religious attitude. Therefore, an interpreter needs to consider not only the analysis of the text of the Qur’an but also its context of revelation. This statement is proven by analyzing the interpretation of Nasir al-Sa’di on inter religious relation. The data is first analyzed using the thematic approach. This approach is used to collect verses related to interreligious relation. In the next step, this interpretation is analyzed by contextual approach as proposed by Abdullah Saeed.

Abstract

This article is to prove that the more comprehensive the interpretation of the Qur’an is the more objective his/her interpretation is. This article demonstrates that Sayyid Qutb is one of the mufassirs who interprets the Qur’an comprehensively. The concept offered by Qutb is the thematic unity of the Qur’an. Qutb’s interpretation is based on the thematic unity in the Qur’an as a whole and in its each Sura. This article agrees with Muhammad ‘Abd Allah Diraz, A.H. Mathias Zahniser who argue for the harmony, coherence and thematic unity of the Qur’an. However, it argues against ‘Izzuddin ibn ‘Abd al-Salam, Subhi al-Salih, and Salwa M.S. El-Awa who doubt and deny the harmony, coherence and thematic unity of the Qur’an.

Abstract

The ideological bias in Qur’anic interpretation cannot be fully eliminated. Its existence, however, cannot be ignored, because it can be reduced. The historical interpretation -- considered by some – can respond to this ideological challenge. To prove this statement, this writer will describe Sayyid Qutb’s interpretation in his political concept, especially hakimiyyah or God’s sovereignity in his Fi Zilal al-Qur’an. The ta’wil of Abu Zayd, enriched by the critical discourse analyses and social cognition of van Dijk, will be used to prove that the more ahistorical an interpretation is the more ideological it is.

Abstract

There has been a shift of paradigm between the classical Muslim scholars and the modern Muslim scholars in analyzing the Qur’an. The classical scholars preferred theological paradigm, while the modern scholars prefer academic and critical studies. In analyzing the Arabicity of Qur’anic language, the classical scholars argued that all language of the Qur’an are pure Arabic language. They based their argument on the verses of the Qur’an, and also on the theological view on the origin of Qur’anic language.  The modern scholars, on the other hand, argue for the existence of foreign words in the Qur’an. This view is based on the fact that the Qur’anic language is historical and cultural language, eventhough they do not deny its divine origin. In this article, the writer analyzes the view of Sa’d ‘Abd al-Mutallib al-‘Adl in his al-Hiruglifiyah Tufassir Al-Qur'an Sharh ma Yusamma bi al-Huruf al-Muqatta’ah which seeks to find the historical root of the Qur’an in Old Egyptian civilization to prove the use of Old Egyptian terms in the Qur’an.

Abstract

Contrary to the views of some scholars which state that Muhammad ‘Abduh’s rational interpretation of the Qur’an was influenced by Mu‘tazilah, this article reveals that some interpretations which have emerged in the 19th century, especially related to al-Kauniyah verses, have been influenced by the Positivism paradigm. In order to prove that, the writer discusses ‘Abduh’s Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karim Juz’ ‘Amma and shows how his interpretation was based on the philosophy of Positivism.

The thesis of this article is that these criticisms reflect a conflict in the early Islam, and the formation of Muslim communal identity. At the end of the article, the writer discusses the most heated debate whether Islam abrogates previous religions.

Abstract

This research compares and discusses the sciences of the Qur’an (‘ulum al-Qur’an) and the sciences of interpretational guidelines (Qawa‘id al-Tafsir), as have been shown in the popular books used in Indonesia – works of al-Zarkashi, al-Suyuti, al-Zarqani and Salih – with that of Khalid ibn ‘Uthman al-Sabt. The later has proposed 280 guidelines and 100 subguidelines, which are relevant as the basis for interpreting the Qur’an. The writer, however, argues that more guidelines are still needed.

Abstract

This paper looks into intra-Qur’anic connections derived from serious efforts either to reveal what-so-called the mathematic miracle of the Qur’an or to interprete the Qur’an with the Qur’an. In doing so, it seeks to explore the compatibility of the two as well as the possibility to make both approaches to the Qur’an mutually inclusive. In this regard, this article deals particularly with some examples of connection among Qur’anic verses pursued through various attempts to find the alleged numerical code in the Qur’an, and compares them to what selected tafsirs have disclosed.

Abstract

The Qur'an is not sufficient to be read in a single glass. Its significance continues to be present in a tumult of life. The Qur'an is also a book that concerns with human affairs and the environment. Because of its importance of the position, the Qur’an needs to be understood with intelligent and open perspectives. The more intelligent and open in reading the Qur'an, the meaning of the Qur’an will be more intelligent and open. Conversely, the more narrow and closedin reading the Qur'an, the meaning will be more narrow and closed. Therefore the readers of the Qur’an are encouraged to continue improving their capacity to understand the Qur'an very well. To master not only the basic sciences, but also other sciences related to the growth of human civilization. That is why a new method to read the Qur’an, such as hermeneutics and the historicity of the Qur’an, may, within certain limits, embrace the presence of al-Qur'an in life.

Abstract

The local interpretation of the Qur’an cannot be ignored in the discourse of Qur’anic studies in Indonesia. Its significance lays not only in the continuity of Islamic tradition networks, but also in the creativity of linguistic expression and its content of local wisdom relevant with the need of society.  This study tries to shed light on the Sundanese cultural nuance in Sundanese Qur’anic interpretation. There are at least three elements which indicate Sundanese cultural nuance which becomes the characteristic of local reception of the Qur’an in Sundanese Qur’anic interpretation: the use of speech level, traditional expression and the metaphore of Sundanese nature. These three elements can be used as the first categorization to classify Sundanese Qur’anic interpretation as Sundanese.
