Abstract

Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia) is one of the most common plants in Indonesia. This plant is often found in various regions in Indonesia, where these plants are often in the form of shrubs or wild plants that grow in yards or plantations. This study aims to assess the effect of noni (Morinda citrifolia) fruit extract on blood sugar levels and the expression of GLUT4 protein in muscle tissue which shows the potential of the test extract's ability to improve blood glucose intake in cells so that it can maintain blood sugar regulation. This research was an experimental study that used white rats as research subjects. Induction of diabetes was done by injecting alloxan at a dose of 110 mg/kg BW intraperitoneally; then the white rats were given 10% glucose to drink. Alloxan-induced white rats showed a very significant increase in blood sugar levels, where the use of the drug metformin was able to reduce blood sugar levels significantly. In white rats induced with diabetes mellitus, there was a decrease in GLUT4 levels in muscle tissue. The administration of metformin drugs or noni fruit extracts shows the ability to increase levels of GLUT4 protein. In conclusion, noni fruit extract affects lowering blood sugar levels in diabetes mellitus white rats by increasing glucose intake in cells and tissues.

Abstract

Tinospora crispa, Andrographis paniculata, Cinamomum burmanii, Syzygium polyanthum and Momordica charantia contain phenolics and flavonoids which are rich in benefits. Phenolic compounds are compounds that have an aromatic ring with one or more hydroxy groups, compounds derived from plants that have the same characteristics, namely aromatic rings containing one or more hydroxyl groups. Herbal plants, which are rich in phenolic compounds, have the efficacy, among others, as antioxidants, anti- inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-fungal and prevents tumor growth. The acute toxicity test is a procedure designed to determine the median lethal dose of a substance and its possible mechanism of action and target organs. In simple terms, toxicity can be defined as the ability of a compound that can cause harmful effects or deviate from the biological mechanism in an organism.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that disturbs the body's blood sugar regulation. This disorder is characterized by a decrease in the ability of body cells to intake glucose into cells. Due to the failure of cells in glucose intake, glucose buildup occurs in the extracellular, namely in the plasma. These medicinal plants contain quite varied secondary metabolites, and these plants are rich in flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenes, and glycosides. The content of these secondary metabolite compounds is believed to be rich in antioxidant effects so that it has the effect of being able to suppress various oxidative stress conditions that cause damage to various organs due to blood sugar dysregulation. The effect of Tinospora crispa, Andrographis paniculata, Cinnamomum burmanii, Syzygium polyanthum and Momordica charantia extract on blood sugar levels and GLUT4 protein expression in muscle tissue shows the potential of the test extract's ability to improve blood glucose intake to cells so as to maintain blood sugar regulation.

Abstract

Today, natural medicines not only provide the primary healthcare needs for the majority of the population in developing countries but have attracted more and more attention in developed countries due to soaring healthcare costs and universal financial austerity. In the USA, approximately 49% of the population has tried natural medicines for the prevention and treatment of diseases. Chemicals known to have medicinal benefits are considered to be “active ingredients” or “active principles” of natural medicines. Natural products have provided the primary sources for new drug development.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease characterized by an increase in blood glucose levels caused by insulin deficiency, either absolute or relative. The α-glucosidase enzyme functions to accelerate the absorption of glucose by the small intestine by catalyzing the hydrolytic cleavage of oligosaccharides into monosaccharides. This study aims to explore the potential of AP extract in regulating blood sugar levels through inhibition of α-glucosidase activity in the intestine. This study is an in vivo experimental study. A total of 30 \ rats were divided into a control group and treated with Andrographis paniculata. Examination of blood sugar levels was carried out by spectrophotometry and examination of alpha-glucosidase enzymes by ELISA. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software with univariate and bivariate analysis. Andrographis paniculata extract was able to reduce blood sugar levels and was able to decrease the activity of the alpha-glucosidase enzyme as the dose increased. Andrographis paniculata extract is able to reduce blood sugar levels by inhibiting the activity of the alpha-glucosidase enzyme in the intestine.

Abstract

One of the efforts to prevent COVID-19 that can be done is to increase individual immunity. The effort that can be made is to use herbal ingredients as health drinks. Curcuma longa L., or turmeric, has long been known as one of the ingredients used to treat several complaints. Turmeric has a chemical content of carbohydrates (69.4%), curcuminoids, and essential oils (5.8%). Turmeric and curcumin are non-mutagenic, and no reproductive toxicity has been observed. Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb, also known as temulawak, contains curcuminoids (1-2%) and essential oils with xanthorrhizol components (31.9%), ß-curcumene (17.1%), arcurcumene (13.2%), camphor (5.4%), γ-curcumene (2.6%), (Z)-γ-bisabolene (2.6%), and (E)-ß-farnesene (1.2%). Empirically, temulawak has been used for generations in Indonesia to treat various digestive disorders, skin complaints, liver and bile disorders.

Abstract

COVID-19 infection with moderate or severe symptoms can cause pneumonia with an opaque appearance that can be detected on a chest CT scan, pulmonary edema, and accumulation of pleural fluid in the lungs. The use of herbs as health drinks is thought to play a role in increasing the body's immunity. Meniran plant (Phyllantus niruri) contains tannins and flavonoids, which are efficacious as immunomodulators. Meanwhile, sambiloto also contains chemical compounds of alkaloids, carbohydrates, resins, saponins, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides, and tannins. Meniran and sambiloto herbs have the potential to increase the system potential to be developed as a supplement to treat COVID-19.

Abstract

Increasing the body's immunity is one of the efforts to prevent infection with COVID-19. This literature review aims to describe the potential of ginger (Zingiber officinale roscoe) and guava (Psidium guajava L.) as supplements for the management of COVID-19. Grated ginger (Zingiber officinale roscoe) is used as a topical medication to treat swelling, rheumatism, and headaches. In vivo tests in rats that were immunosuppressed using cyclophosphamide showed that ginger essential oil given once a day orally for a week could increase the humoral immune response. Meanwhile, guava has high levels of polyphenols such as myricetin and apigenin compounds, ellagic acid, and anthocyanins. The high vitamin C content in guava contributes to immune defense by supporting various cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune systems.
