Abstract

Oil palm growth in peatland may influence the presence of microbial populations. Root exudate is one of the organic compounds that is released by oil palm roots in the rhizosphere area where it can be used as a nutrient for microbes to survive in peatland. The study was conducted to study functional microbial population in the rhizosphere area of oil palm plantation aged <6, 9−15, and >15 years in Riau peatlands. The highest microbial populations were found in oil palm plantation aged <6 years at peat thicknesses of <3 and >3 m, which was respectively 10.3 x 106 and 5.7 x 106 CFU g-1. The highest cellulolytic microbial population was found in oil palm plantation aged <6 years at peat thicknesses of <3 and >3m, which was respectively 17.4 x 104 and 11.4 x 104 CFU g-1. The highest Azotobacter population was found in oil palm plantation aged >15 years at peat thicknesses of <3 and >3m, which was respectively 9.4 x 105 and 12.5 x 105 CFU g-1. The highest phosphate solubilizing microbial population was found in oil palm plantation aged <6 years at peat thicknesses of <3 and >3m, which was respectively 11.4 x 104 and 13.2 x 104 CFU g-1. The highest fungal population was found in oil palm plantation aged <6 years at peat thicknesses of <3 m and >3 m, which was respectively 11.4 x 104 CFU g-1 and 17.3 x 104 CFU g-1. The highest white-rot fungal population was found in oil palm plantation aged 9−15 years at peat thicknesses of <3 m and >3 m, which was respectively 8.7 x 103 CFU g-1 and 9.4 x 103 CFU g-1. In conclusion, the highest microbial population was dominantly found in oil palm plantation aged <6 years. Keywords: Microbial populations, oil palm plantation, peat thickness, rhizosphere area

Abstract

Recently, exploration of natural antibiotic alternatives by utilizing medicinal plants is often carried out. Nutmeg plant (Myristica fragrans Houtt) is a tropical plant endemic to the Maluku Island and often used as medicine by local people. This study was aimed to isolate endophytic bacteria from the nutmeg plant and detect its potential as an antibacterial against pathogenic bacteria. The study is a descriptive observational study with a true experimental approach. Endophytic bacteria were isolated from several organs of the nutmeg plant such as leaves, leaf bones, stems, fruit flesh, and seeds and then tested for their inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Propionibacterium acne, and Escherichia coli. The results showed that: (1) the highest total population of endophytic bacteria was found in the seeds of nutmeg (7.5x104 CFU/ml), (2) ten isolates of endophytic bacteria were obtained with varying morphological characteristics, and (3) the detection of antibacterial activity showed that of the 10 isolates obtained, 4 isolates were able to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, namely isolate BEAD2, BEATD1, BEABJ 2, and BEABJ 1 with the diameter of the inhibition zones of each isolate being 3.4 mm, 3.2 mm, 1.6 mm and 1.5 mm respectively. The conclusion of this study is that 4 isolates of endophytic bacteria were detected as potential antibacterial against Escherichia coli.

Abstract: The attack from novel coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak has spread massively throughout Indonesia and has ever become the case with the highest death rate in Southeast Asia. Abstract

Garbage is all waste generated by human and animal activities. waste is divided into solid waste, mud, liquid, and gas which is disposed of because it is no longer needed. Among all sources of waste, household waste is the largest waste, reaching 40.7%. As a village located in the center of Ambon city and along the river, Rijali Village has many problems with waste management, where all household and industrial waste are dumped into rivers which affects on water quality and public health. This problem becomes more serious when the increase in the amount of waste is not accompanied by the government's ability to provide adequate waste management facilities and participation from the community. Therefore, active participation from the community is needed to create a more comprehensive waste management system starting from the household scope based on the 5R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replant, Replace). The objectives of this service activity are: (1) to educate the community, especially the Rijali Village community about efficient waste management starting from the household, (2) to increase public awareness regarding conservative and environmentally friendly lifestyles (3) to introduce the waste bank system to the community. The target of this community service activity is to increase the level of knowledge and awareness of the community in implementing a clean and healthy lifestyle in everyday life.
