Abstract

Increased HIV prevalence in gay populations is a warning that needs to get government attention. AIDS prevention programs in gay populations have been implementing various methods to change high-risk behavior. However, HIV prevalence in gay populations continues to rise. The Indonesian Constitution affirms human rights, including the right to life, the right against discrimination, and other fundamental rights protected by the state. The research results showed that the fulfillment of the right to health in gay is not going well or less effective. It was evidenced by the percentage of gay that reaches out to health services was still limited. Gays were reluctant to access health services because of the lack of confidentiality and privacy of the services of health workers, the general public, and the limited facilities. Besides, stigma and discrimination are still often received both from health workers and families and communities. They worried other gays would know the result of the test of VCT. There is a need for standardization of services at all subdistrict health centers and hospitals providing VCT services for gay in Jember. Abstract

Pregnancy is a unique period for a woman’s life, which there is physical and physiological changesincluding the oral cavity [1], [2].The main salivary changes in pregnancy are salivarate change, composition, pH, and hormone levels[3]. During pregnancy, pH of saliva and gingival fluidbecome more acidic [4]. Increased acid production inthe oral cavity when accompanied by a lackawareness of pregnant women in maintaining thecleanliness of the oral cavity will expedite theemergence of caries. Based on data of RiskesdasMinistry of Health in 2013, the prevalence of cariesin Indonesia was 53.2%, therefore the maintenanceof the teeth of pregnant women should be takeninto account and improved [5].Caries etiologies are multi factorial. They are hosts, saliva, microorganisms and time [6]. Based on thebackground above, author wanted to know dentalcaries in pregnant women who visit Posyandu ofseveral public health centers in Jember.

Abstract

Background: Bootstrap is a computer simulation-based method that provides estimation accuracy in estimating inferential statistical parameters. Purpose: This article describes a research using secondary data (n = 30) aimed to elucidate bootstrap method as the estimator of linear regression test based on the computer programs MINITAB 13, SPSS 13, and MacroMINITAB. Methods: Bootstrap regression methods determine ˆ β and Yˆ value from OLS (ordinary least square), ε i = Yi −Yˆi value, determine how many repetition for bootstrap (B), take n sample by replacement from ε i to ε (i) , Yi = Yˆi + ε (i) value, ˆ β value from sample bootstrap at i vector. If the amount of repetition less than, B a recalculation should be back to take n sample by using replacement from ε i . Otherwise, determine ˆ β from “bootstrap” methods as the average ˆ β value from the result of B times sample taken. Result: The result has similar result compared to linear regression equation with OLS method (α = 5%). The resulting regression equation for caries was = 1.90 + 2.02 (OHI-S), indicating that every one increase of OHI-S unit will result in caries increase of 2.02 units. Conclusion: This was conducted with B as many as 10,500 with 10 times iterations.

Abstract

Background: Kuniran thorns and Gurami fish scales are rich in protein and minerals such as dentin believed to increase cell viability against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) that causes dental caries. These, in turn, can cause systemic diseases if left untreated. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the influence of Kuniran thorns and Gurami fishes scales on the viability of monocytes and salivary leukocytes against S. mutans. Methods: Monocytes and leukocytes salivary cells were placed on a microtiter plate and treated according to the nature of each group. This study comprised the following groups: control group: untreated; S. mutans group: induced by S. Mutans; Gurami thorn group: thorns + S. Mutans; Gurami scales group: scales + S. Mutans; Kuniran thorn group: thorns + S. Mutans; Kuniran scales group: scales + S. mutans. Viability analysis involved staining with Tripan Blue. Furthermore, the number of viable cells (white) was calculated under an inverted microscope at 200 times magnification from five fields of view. Data was analyzed by means of an ANOVA test followed by LSD test. Results: The ANOVA and LSD tests confirmed significant differences (0.01<P). Kuniran thorns and Gurami fish scales increased the viability of monocytes and salivary leukocytes, but not significantly. The content of flavonoids, amino acids, omega 3, omega 6 and antioxidants increased leukocyte metabolism, thereby increasing cell resistance to S. mutans infection. Conclusion: Kuniran thorns (U. moluccensis) and Gurami (O. goramy) fish scales increase the viability of salivary leukocyte and monocyte cells against Streptococcus mutans.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries may cause discomfort and pain when chewing food, which in turn leads to insufficient absorption of nutrients, including iron, by the body. Lack of iron intake can cause iron-deficiency anaemia. Iron deficiency may also decrease salivary secretion and buffer capacity due to reduced salivary gland function, which may lead to dental caries. Purpose: This study aims to analyse the correlation between dental caries and serum iron (Fe) levels in the students of Mamba’ul Khoiriyati Islamiyah (MHI) Madrasa Aliyah in Bangsalsari Jember. Methods: Out of 71 students aged 15-18 years, 24 students were examined for caries with the DMF-T index and blood samples were also collected using the phlebotomy technique to assess the serum iron (Fe) level in µg/dL. The data were analysed using the Spearman’s correlation test (α = 0.05). Results: The average DMF-T score was high (7 ± 3.4) and the average serum iron (Fe) level was below normal (38 ± 11.5 µg/dL). The Spearman’s correlation test for dental caries and serum iron (Fe) levels showed significant results (p <0.05). Conclusion: The occurrence of dental caries correlates with serum iron (Fe) levels. The higher the level of serum iron (Fe), the lower the level of dental caries.

Abstract

Until todays, dental caries disease is a major problem in a child's oral cavity. Children aged 6-10 years old are vulnerable to dental and oral diseases. The aim of this study was to describe the severity of dental caries in primary school children in 10 districts in Jember. An observational study with cross sectional approach was conducted in July-September 2015. Accidental sampling was 102 children of primary school grade 1 to grade 6 in 10 districts in Jember (Ambulu, Balung, Ledokombo, Tanggul, Mayang, Gumukmas, Jenggawah, Pakusari, Rambipuji and Sukorambi). The variables studied were deciduous tooth caries with four categories of severity i.e. pulp irritation (IP), pulp hyperemia (HP), gangrene of the pulp (GP), gangrene roots (GR). Data were presented in descriptive research results with a frequency distribution table and a bar chart. The results showed that most cases of primary teeth were gangrene tooth root 626 (38.1%), subsequently gangrene dental pulp 454 (27.7%), 360 dental pulp hyperemia (21.9%), and cases of irritation of the pulp were at least 202 teeth (12.3%). The high incidence of gangrene roots caused by deciduous teeth which have a tendency to be more susceptible to the development of caries lesions, lack of knowledge, awareness and motivation of parents of the importance of maintaining oral hygiene, the transition period the child's diet between home-cooked meals with school meals, which tend to choose cariogenic foods.
