Abstract

This study was intended to investigate the effect of Cornell note taking method on the 11th grade students’ grammar learning at MAN 1 Kendari. The research question of thisstudy was “Is there any significant effect of Cornell note taking method instruction on students’ grammar learning at class XI of MAN 1 Kendari?”. The scope of the study revolved around the students in 11th grade of MAN 1 Kendari and Grammar courses.The samples of this study were from class XI IPS 2 as control class and XI IPS 3 as experimental class; there are 20 students from each class. This study was a quantitative study that employed two-group) posttest-only design with Cornell note taking method as independent variable and students’ grammar learning as dependent variable.The datawas collected through a grammar test with 35 items of questions. The data of this study was analyzed by usingSPSS 16.0. The result showed that there was 2.80200 score difference between both classes with control class obtained 3.92 and experimental class achieved 6.72. The data obtained via Independent Sample T-test presented the p value was.000. Thus, because the p value indicated that Sig. < α (0.05), it showed that H0was rejected and H1was accepted. Moreover, the calculated effect size, r = 0.6, was categorized as large. Therefore, it could be concluded that Cornell note taking method had worked well and carried a large effect on improving students’ grammar learning at class XI IPS 3 of MAN 1 Kendari.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the types of conjunctions and the accurately use of conjunction in students’ writing. This research was conducted in SMAN 1 Tongkuno. The instrument of this research was students’ writing that focused on recount text. This research employed descriptive qualitative design. The population of this research was the second-grade students of SMAN 1 Tongkuno. The sample of this research is the second-grade students of SMA N 1 Tongkuno consist of 20 students. The researcher collected the data by asking the students to write their personal recount. The technique of data analysis in this study was descriptive analysis, while to analyze the accuracy of conjunction the researcher used criteria of correctness in cohesion that consist of the use of conjunction on students’ writing. The result shows that all of types of conjunction exist in students writing, additive conjunction is the most frequently conjunction used in students’ writing, followed by temporal conjunction, then causal conjunction, and the last adversative conjunction. The accuracy of conjunction used by students on their writing contribute highly because mostly the second-grade students of SMAN 1 Tongkuno use conjunction accurately.

Abstract

This study aims at determining students’ competence in Micro-Teaching course at English Department. The researcher exclusively focused on analyzing the seven skills they are: opening and closing the lesson, explaining skill, questioning skill, reinforcement, providing variation, classroom management and guiding small group discussion. The subject of the study was students at English Department who were taking Micro-Teaching course. The totals of the subject were 30 students. The researcher employed descriptive qualitative design with observation, video and assessment rubric. The result show differently in which students’ mastery level in opening and closing the lesson is good with the average score 72%, explaining skill is very good with the percentage of average score 81%, questioning skill is very bad with the percentage of average score 59%, reinforcement is very good with the percentage of average score 88%, providing variation is very bad with the percentage of average score 49%, classroom management is bad with the percentage of average score 55%, and the last guiding small group discussion is very bad with the percentage of average score 26%. Besides, it also portrayed that the most mastered skills among all skill is reinforcement and skill the most lack is guiding small group discussion.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out whether or not the silent way method can significantly affect students’ speaking competence. The design of this study was a pre-experimental research design (one group pre-test post-test design). The researcher applied a simple random sampling technique. The class 10 IPA1 was taken as the sample of the study with 18 students. The instrument of this study was an oral test in pre-test and post-test. This research was conducted through the following procedures: giving a pre-test, applying treatments and giving a post-test. The data were analyzed by using paired sample t-test. Through the SPSS16.0 version. The result showed that the mean score on students’ speaking competence in a pre-test was 32.22 and in the post-test was 49.44. Hypothesis testing found that the value of sig (2 tailed) was 0.00 while the significant alpha value was 0.0. It could be concluded that the value of sig (2 tailed) was lower than the significant alpha value was (0.00<0.05). Therefore, H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. So, the use of the silent way method had a significant on the students’ speaking competence at the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Kontu kowuna.

Abstract

This thesis is about the analysis of speech acts found in the talk show “Hitam Putih” on Trans 7 (Episode 18th December 2017). The research question of this thesis were (1) What kinds of the illocutionary acts used in host and main guest stars utterance in “Hitam Putih” talk show? And (2) How perlocutionary acts implied in host and main guest stars utterance in “Hitam Putih” talk show?. The objectives of this research were to identifying and analyze the types of the illocutionary acts and the perlocutionary acts implied in host and main guest stars utterance in “Hitam Putih” talk show.This research used a qualitative method to describe and analyze the utterances. The technique of data collection were (1) Download the video of talk show Hitam Putih from YouTube. (2) Transcribe the conversation by listen to the video in several times. (3) Reads and observes dialog from the script. (4) Classified the types of illocutionary acts which finding in conversation. The technique of data analysis were (1) The researcher identified the illocutionary act and perlocutionary act from the host and main guest stars utterance in Hitam Putih talk show. (2) Described and analized the utterances which include illocutionary and perlocutionary acts by using pragmatic approach. (3) Concluding the data analysis.The result of this thesis show that assertive illocutionary acts is the dominant types of speech act. There are 29 assertive of illocutionary acts, 14 directive of illocutionary acts, 15 expressive of illocutionary acts, 1 commissive of illocutionary acts. Perlocutionary acts which occurs between the speakers and the listener in the form of give statements, give questions, body language, expressions and following the speaker’s directions.

Abstract

This study investigated the types and the functions of conversational implicature were used in Ice Age 3 movie. The objectives of this study have identified the types and described the functions of conversational implicature were used in "Ice Age 3 Movie''. The technique of data analysis was the researcher identified the utterances which are containing conversational implicature in ice age 3 movie based on the theory of implicature which purposed by Yule and classified the utterances based on the types of conversational implicature, namely particular implicature, scalar implicature, and generalized implicature. The researcher described the function implicature are used in ice age 3 movie based on the theory of speech act classification which is proposed by Searle. The result of this study showed that there are three types of conversational implicature found on Ice Age 3 movie based on implicature theory by Yule and the researcher also found there are four functions of conversational implicature were used in Ice Age 3 movie based on a theory of speech act by Searle.

Abstract

Speech function that used in delivering instructional process is important because a major part of class time in learning process is taken up by teachers. Teachers should use speech function appropriate with the classroom context. This study applied speech function theory to analyse functional speech of teacher‟s utterances. This study investigated the speech function used by English teachers in language instruction. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of speech function and the accuracy of speech functions used by English teachers at SMAN 5 Kendari. This study employed a qualitative research design. The techniques of data collection were documentation and observation. To analyse the data, the researcher used descriptive analysis. The result of this study showed that there are five types of speech function and they are accurately used by English teachers in giving instruction.Keywords: Speech Function, Accuracy, Context

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating  the quantitative adjectives and semantic types of quantitative  adjectives in  Kulisusu language. The scope of this research was quantitative adjectives and semantic types of quantitative adjective meaning color, size, form and taste. The research questions of this study were "what is the form quantitative adjectives in Kulisusu language" and "what is the semantic type of quantitative adjectives in Kulisusu language. This research used qualitative descriptive by applying some techniques of collecting data such as :  (1) translation, (2) introspection (3) elicitation and interview.  Instrument of Indonesian word of adjective. After  the data being collected, the data were analyzed by using   the following steps : (1) identify the form of adjectives, (2) determine the form of adjectives,  and (3) determine the meaning of adjectives.The  result of the research  showed that Kulisusu language had  six kinds of quantitative adjective gathered  in this research namely  ompole, sade’ete, samentonga, malingumo and  o’opa.  And there are seven kinds of semantic types of quantitative adjectives meaning color  namely , mea, kuni, bula, yijo, kangura, and wungu. Furthermore  adjective meaning in term could be seen  of lines that make it consist of shapes that have straight lines, shapes that have curved lines, and shapes that have mixed lines, namely straight lines and curved lines. After that adjective meaning the size in detail  twelve types of subordinates namely (1.) distance size, (2,)  long size, (3.)  high, size (4.)   broad size, (5.)  depth size, (6)  thickness size, (7.)  content size (8.) amount size, (9.) time size, (10.) heavy size, (11) big size, and (12.) age size. The last adjective meaning of  taste includes  (1.) a state  that symbolizes the ambiences of the mind (2.) a taste that symbolizes of  the mood, and (3.) a taste that symbolizes the senses.

Abstract

This thesis is about the analysis of speech act in Barbie as Rapunzel movie. The research questions of this thesis were (1) what are the direct and indirect speech acts used by the main character in Barbie as Rapunzel movie? And (2) What are the perlocutionary acts of the main character’s utterances in Barbie as Rapunzel movie?. The objectives of this research were (1) To decribe the direct and indirect speech acts used by the main character in Barbie as Rapunzel movie and (2) To describe the perlocutionary acts of the main character’s utterances in Barbie as Rapunzel movie.This research used a qualitative method to describe and analyze the utterance. The technique of data collection were (1) The researcher download Barbie as Rapunzel movie on youtube. (2) The researcher watched the movie of Barbie as Rapunzel  repetedly. (3) Reading and checking dialogue which related with research from the movie script “Barbie as Rapunzel” movie. (4) The researcher classified the dirrect, indirect speech, and perlocutionary acts. The technique of data analysis were (1) The researcher identified the direct, indirect speech act and perlocutionary acts from Barbie as Rapunzel movie. (2) Described and analized the utterances which include direct, indirect, and perlocutionary acts. (3) Concluding the data analysis.The result of this thesis show that direct speech acts is the dominant types of speech acts. Where, there are 58 direct speech acts, 2 indirect speech acts, and 41 perlocutionary acts.
