Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research is aim to find out the ability of the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau in writing a paragraph. The sample of this research is one of the three classes of the first year students of English Study Program which are choose by using cluster random sampling technique. The number of the sample is 37 students. The data were collected by giving a written test to the student individually. The test asked the students to write a paragraph by choosing one of the given topics. The students’ scores were analyzed by using Harris’ scoring system which concerned with five aspects of writing, they are Grammar, Vocabulary, Mechanics, Fluency and Organization. The findings show that the students’ average score for each aspect of writing was in “good” level where the students’ ability in terms of Vocabulary was the highest among the other aspects with the average score 71,91, while Mechanics was the lowest one, with the average score 64,08. Based on the results obtained, it can be inferred that the students are able to write a paragraph and their level of ability is in “good” level with the average score 66,98. By looking to the aspect the students mostly weak, that is Mechanics, this study recommended the students to do the two important ways that probably can solve this problem. The students need to learn and practice more about Mechanics. The more students learn and practice, the more they know about Mechanics. It will make them better in Mechanics aspect.Key Words: Study, Ability, Writing, Paragraph

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to know the effect of Choral Reading Strategy on students? reading fluency ability in SMK Taruna Satria Pekanbaru. This research was pre-experimental research with one group pretest-posttest design model. The first year students in academic were 2018/2019 chosen as the population of this research. The sample of this research was class 1 TKJ 1 that consisted of 29 students chosen by cluster sampling technique. Descriptive text was chosen as the instrument of this research. To collect the data the students read the text aloud individually. The reading text consisted of 158 words. Ms. Excell 2013 was used to analyze the data. Based on the results, the mean score of post-test was higher than the mean score of pre-test. The mean score for pre-test was 62.10 while the mean score in post-test was 65.47. The value of t-test was higher than t-table (6.1026 > 2.77) at 1% of the significant level. In short, the null hypothesis (H0) of this research was rejected. It can be concluded that, there is significant effect of choral reading strategy on students? reading fluency.Keywords: Choral Reading Strategy, Reading Fluency, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to know the effect of storytelling technique on student’s speaking ability of the third year students of SMP N 1 Benai. This research was pre-experimental design involving 22 students as a sample chosen through cluster random sampling. The data were gained before and after the treatment implementing storytelling technique. The students were given pre-test and post-test. The average score for pre-test was 46.54 and the average score for post-test was 63.21. The data shows that there are an increass from the pre-test and the post-test. The data analysis shows that the t-test is higher than t-table (7.517> 2.08).The result of this research shows that storytelling technique had an effect on students’ speaking ability because there was a significant difference between the post-test and pre-test. It shows that the storytelling technique could help the students to improve their speaking ability. Related to this research the aspect of fluency has the highest different score then, grammar and pronunciation has the lowest score. Thus, the learning process need to focus on that aspects.

Abstract

Abstract : The objective of this research is to find out types of errors made by the third year students of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru in writing descriptive text. This is a descriptive research. The subject of this study was the third year students of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru. In conducting this research, the writer used 30 students as a sample. The students were selected to be the sample using cluster sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was writing test. The result of this research showed that the students committed error into four types: omission, addition, misformaion, and misordering. From the frequency of each error type, ‘omission’ was the error which most frequently produced by the students. It took 47,25% of the total errors. Moreover, 32,11% errors fell into error of ‘misformation’ and 14,68% errors fell into ‘addition’; whereas, for error of ‘misordering’, it only took 5,96%.Key Words: Error, Writing, Descriptive text.

Abstract

Penelitian Tindakan Kelas ini dilakukan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswamenulis esai. Teknik ‘Listing’ dalam aktifitas Brainstorming diaplikasikan kepada mahasiswa yangmengambil MK Writing III. Pre-test dilakukan sebelum tindakan dan setelah tindakan dilaksanakanpost-test. Prosedur aplikasi teknik ‘Listing’ dalam aktifitas Brainstorming adalah: 1. Tuliskan topikdibagian atas kertas. 2. Buatlah daftar setiap ide yang muncul dalam pikiranmu tentang topik. 3. Gunakankata, frase atau kalimat dan jangan khawatir tentang ejaan dan tata bahasa. 4. Tuliskan kembali daftardan kelompokkan ide-ide yang sama bersama-sama. Coret item-item yang tidak sesuai atau yangberulang-ulang. Setelah tindakan (2 siklus), terdapat peningkatan skor rerata dari pre-test (53.77) ke(63.49). Hasil observasi juga menunjukkan bahwa aktifitas mahasiswa dalam mengikuti prosedurpembelajaran dengan teknik Listing adalah 68.6%. Ini memenuhi standard kompetensi yang diterapkan(³ 61). Disamping standard kompetensi yang diterapkan, t-test juga dilakukan untuk melihat keefektifanteknik Listing. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa nilai t-hitung (3.92) lebih besar dari nilai ‘t’ tabel padataraf signifikan 0.05 (2.021) and 0.01 (2.704). Ini menunjukkan bahwa teknik Listing dalam aktifitasBrainstorming adalah efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis esai.

Abstract

Abstract: The research is aimed to find out whether there was some significant effect of debate technique on the ability of the second-year students of SMAN 5 Tualang. In conducting the research, pre-experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design was used. The sample of this research was the students of class XI IPA IV consisting of 30 students. The pre-test was administered before the treatment. After the treatment was applied for five meetings using debate technique, a post-test was administered. The data were analyzed using t-test formula. From the result, the researcher found that the value of t-test was 15.690 while the t-table was 2.045. Since the t-test was higher than t-table, alternative hypothesis of this research is. It means that there is a significant effect of debate technique on the ability of the second- year students of SMAN 5 Tualang in speaking.Key Words: Speaking Ability, Debate Technique, Senior High School Students.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study is aimed at finding out if there is a significant effect of Cooperative Script method on the ability of the first year students of SMAN 8 Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. The design of the study is one group pre-test-treatment-posttest design. 36 students of class X Math-Science 9 in the second semester of academic year 2017/2018 were chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling. The instrument of the test was in the form of 40 multiple choice type of questions about recount texts and the treatment was conducted in six times. The students’ scores were analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 23.00 for windows. The results of the data analysis showed that the mean score of pre-test is 70,9028 and the mean score of post-test is 76,2500. The result showed that the value of t-test was higher than t-table (9,619>2,030) at the significance level 5% and at the significance level 2% (9,619>2.438). Therefore, alternative hyphotesis (H1) is accepted and null hyphotesis (Ho) is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Cooperative Script method on the ability of the first year students of SMAN 8 Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts.Keywords: Effect, Cooperative Script Method, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: this descriptive research was conducted in order to find out the taboo words in the hitman’s bodyguard movie. The data were collected using the sociolinguistic approach. The data were in the form of utterances, while the contexts of the data were the dialogues uttered by the characters in the movie. The sources of the data were the video of Hitman’s Bodyguard movie and its transcript. The data were collected by selecting dialogues containing taboo words after watching the video and matching the transcript with the video carefully. The primary instrument of this research was a data sheet. The results of this research are stated as follows. Firstly, all of the types and the function of taboo words are appear in this movie. The types are obscenity,profanity, vulgarity, ephitet and for the functions are to draw attention to oneself, to be provocative, to show contempt, and to mock authority. From four of the types that appear in the movie, obscenity become the type with the highest frequency (46.29%) 25 times, the second is vulgarity with (20.37%) 11 times, the third is ephitet with (18.51%) 10 times, and the last one is profanity with (14.81%) 8 times. From four of the functions that appear in the movie to be provocativet become the function with the highest frequency (50%) 27 times, the second is to show contempt with (27.77%), the third is to draw attention to oneself with (20.37%), and the last one is to mock authority which is onle appear once in the movie (1.85%).Key Words: Sociolinguistics, Taboo Words, Hitman’s Bodyguard Movie

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research is aimed to find out the students' difficulties in writing Analytical Exposition Texts at the second-year students of SMA N 13 Pekanbaru and to analyze the students’ difficulties in writing Analytical Exposition Text at the second-year students of SMA N 13 Pekanbaru. The population of this research was the second year students of SMA N 13 Pekanbaru in the academic year of 2019/2020. The samples were the students of XI. MIA 1 consists of 30 students who have been selected using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by using writing test and interview. The writing tests were analyzed using a writing assessment by Hughes (1989), and the interviews were analyzed by counting the most answers. As a result of the research, it was found that the second year students’ difficulties in writing analytical exposition text were classified as fair (63, 9). The second year students’ difficulties were found in the aspect of the organization (51, 8) and mechanic (56). Thus, in other words, it can be concluded that students’ difficulties in writing analytical exposition texts by the second year students of SMA N 13 Pekanbaru were classified into fair (63.9) and the students’ difficulties were in the aspect of organization and mechanic.Key Words: Analysis, Difficulties, Writing, Analytical Exposition Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This research investigates the ability of the second semester students of SMA Witama Nasional Plus Pekanbaru in writing a narrative text. The population of this research was the second semester students of SMA Witama Nasional Plus Pekanbaru in academic year of 2019/2020. There were 19 students who participate as the sample of this research. The students are tested using a writing test. The result of the test given was then classified into certain categories. The test results of 19 students shows that 5 students (26.32%) are in excellent category, 14 students (73.68%) are in good level. In addition, the average score of the students in writing a narrative text is 75.61. It means that the students’ ability in writing a narrative text was in the good level. Based on the tests, it can be concluded that the second semester students of SMA Witama Nasional Plus Pekanbaru already were in good ability to write a narrative text. Researcher recommended the students and other researchers to conduct similar research to get further information.Key Words: Ability, Writing, Narrative Text
