Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Tualang in writing descriptive texts. In this research, the data was obtained from students’ writing scores. The test is in the form of an essay because the test required the respondents to give the answer in the form of written descriptive text. There are five components of writing: grammar, organizing ideas, vocabulary, fluency / content, and mechanics (Harris : 1974). The writer analyzed the ability of the second year students based on five category: excellent, good, mediocre, poor, and very poor. The participants in this study are 26 students from XI IPA2 of SMAN 1 Tualang. The result of this study described that a number of students faced a problem in mechanics. Grammar is the highest average score. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Tualang is in good level. Although the students still faced some difficulties in writing descriptive texts.Key words: writing ability, descriptive text

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed at finding out the ability of the sixth semester students of English Study Program FKIP-UR in constructing comparative and superlative degrees. This research focuses on students’ ability in constructing comparative and superlative degrees based on the form, such as one-syllable adjectives, two-syllable adjectives, adjectives with three or more syllables, irregular adjectives, and adverb. The data were collected using a grammar test. The test contained 20items. The populationwas the sixth semester students of English Study Program FKIP UR in academic year 2016/2017 that consist of 89 students.The sample size was 31 students who are from Class B, chosen by using cluster sampling technique. The needed data were collected by giving grammar test that consist of tables containing data for the students to construct 2 sentences, comparative and superlative degrees in try out and real test.The try out was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the test. Based on the research, it was found out that first: the ability of the second yearstudents in constructing comparative and superlative degrees is in the good level with the mean score of 73.8.Keywords: Ability, Constructing Sentences, Comparative and Superlative Degrees.

Abstract

Abstract: This research entitled “Pronunciation Errors Made by the Fourth Semester Students of English Department of Universitas Riau”. The aims of this research is to find out the characteristics of errors commonly occur in English pronunciation errors and the causes of errors made by the fourth semester students of English Department at FKIP of Universitas Riau commonly. This is a descriptive qualitative that analyzed about pronunciation errors include vowels, consonants, diphthongs, which pronounced by the fourth semester students of English Department of FKIP Universitas Riau. In conducting this research, the group of population was selected to be a participant by using purposive sampling. There were 78 population and only 39 students as the participants. The test was taken in audio recording. After analyzing the data, from the three aspects that writer analyzed it was found some data and concluded that pronunciation error were made by the fourth semester students of English department of Universitas Riau in high error. There were was error in vowel 82.05 %, consonants with 41.02 % and diphthong 38.46 %.Keywords: Pronunciation, Errors, Analysis and Students.

Abstract

Abstract: The purposes of the study are to to know the ability of the students of the fourth semester of English Study Program of FKIP University of Riau in pronouncing English vowels that do not exist in Indonesian. The population of this study was the fourth semester English student department FKIP University of Riau. The instrument used by the writer in this research was a test, tape recorder it that to record the students’ pronunciation. In analyzing the data, error analysis was used the research employed students’ errors in pronouncing English vowels into separate divisions, employing the percentage descriptive analysis to count all error and interpreting the result of the data analysis. Finally, the result of the analysis shows that students are considered “Good to Excellent” in pronouncing English vowels. Keywords:  Students Ability in Pronouncing and Pronouncing English Vowel Not Exist in Indonesia.
