Abstract

Hoya purpureofusca Hook.f. (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) has been used as an ornamental plant and the international trade of this species has become increasing. This species has restricted distribution on the high elevation of Java and Bali mountains. This epiphyte climber has succulent leaves and umbellate delicate flowers. Flower has star shape, succulent and waxy, purple., c.1 cm in diameter. The observation on the morphological characteristic is aimed to select the best sample for ornamental plant. The total of 17 observed samples were obtained from three populations at Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, West Java, Indonesia. The selection was based on the node length, size of the leaves, and flower number, size and color. The result showed that P01 from Cibodas could be developed as leaf ornamental plant, because its shortest node and small leaves. SP1 from Selabintana could be developed as flower ornamental plant, it has numerous, larger and deep purple flower. SP1 and P01 have the farest relatives distance among all observed accessions, but still have a similarity of 75%.

Abstract

The giant corpse inflorescence (Amorphophallus titanum) is native to Indonesia. It is one of the flagships of The Center for Plant Conservation Bogor Botanic Gardens, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) to raise public awareness for saving plants from extinction and caring the living environment. The blooming of the giant inflorescence attracts many visitors. Therefore, one of the research focuses of Amorphophallus titanum is how to predict the blooming-time in order to inform visitors earlier. The results of this study can be used as the basic information to predict the blooming of the inflorescences. Previous researchers had tried to predict the blooming based on firstly, the differential diagnostics of an inflorescence bud and leaf bud, and secondly, the growth pattern of the flowering bud from one individual sample only; whereas, our results suggested new findings. In this research, the prediction was examined from 2011-2012 on five individual samples planted in Bogor Botanic Gardens. We suggested that (1) the differential diagnostics of an inflorescence bud and leaf bud were not only based on the early bud shapes but also the growth rate, and (2) our results supported Lobin?s findings by providing a statistical formula for growth pattern of the flowering bud.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe Habitat Characteristic of the Critically Endangered Turtle the Sulawesi ForestSulawesi Turtle Leucocephalon yuwonoi in Ganonggol and Bangkir Rivers in CentralSulawesi. The Sulawesi Forest Turtle (Leucocephalon ymonoi) is an endemic, criticallyendangered and listed in the appendix I1 of CITES. Captive breeding is needed toreintroduce the species into the original habitat. Captive breeding success includes acomprehensive knowledge on the biology and ecology of the species. The objective ofthis research is to investigate the habitat character of the turtle respectively vegetation ofthe riverbank, physical and chemical conditions ofthe water. Field surveys were conductedon the Moutong area from 1 l until 19 October 2004 and on the Bangkir area from 20until 26 October 2004. Vegetation data were obtained by developing four quadrate at theturtle habitat in each locality and were analyzed using Curtis method. The results shownthat the habitat of Leucocephalon yuwonoi is transparent streaming water, neutral, nottoo high dissolved oxygen, water height not more than 50 cm, substrat varies from bigstones, small stones, clay loam and sandy loam. The area was covered by vegetation thatcan provide food during all year round, such as Colocasia esculenta, Limnocharisflava, and Ipomoea aquatics.Key Word: Leucocephalon yuwonoi, habitat, vegetation, water conditions.
