Abstract

The teaching of grammar has fluctuated and shifted over years. This paper addresses issues such as different ways of teaching grammar, changes in ideas, and practices at the present stage of its development as well as the current state of the art in grammar instruction. Several grammar textbooks which were published in different years also are looked at in order to discover the extent of change in terms of the materials used to teach grammar from time to time. A considerable array of English language teaching methods is available for teacher to utilize since 1980s. Before deciding to employ a particular method, however, educational practitioners need to take several things into consideration such as the objectives of the instruction, the needs, the interests, the expectation, the age, and the level of the learners, and the available supporting facilities. Equally important, the possible constraints such as the environment where the students are learning, the time, and the expectation of the institution are also needed to be considered.

Abstract

This research aims to mitigate environmental problems through learning by using documentary films for fishermen groups whose environmental conditions have been damaged for years. The fishermen group were from Belopa, Harapan, and Munte Village, North Luwu Regency. The method used was action research by creating learning tools validated by two education experts in two learning actions to observe the learning components' feasibility. The validation of the learning plan and documentary film was in the "very valid" category, which means that these two tools are suitable for increasing environmental knowledge. Education experts also assessed that implementation of learning syntax components, social systems, reaction principles, and support systems was also "very valid." The learning outcome of the fishermen groups ware also improved. At the first action in Belopa, the students' levels were in the low and medium categories. Then at the second action, it increased to the medium and high categories. Meanwhile, at the first action in Harapan, the students' levels were in a low category. Furthermore, at the second action, it went up to the medium and high category. In Munte, the first action shows that the students' levels were in the low and medium categories. Then it increased to the medium and high category at the second action. Efforts to mitigate environmental problems through learning documentary films can increase fishermen groups' environmental knowledge in the low, medium, and high categories even it has not impacted the environment directly yet.

Abstract

The research aimed at finding out the type of illocutionary acts on interaction between teacher and students in the classroom. The data of this research were the English utterances performed by the English teacher at local high school in Palopo. The teaching and learning process in the class was recorded using a video camera and transcribed. Then, the transcribed dialogues were arranged into the data sheet. Finally, the data were classified according to Searle’s classification of illocutionary acts (1976). The results of the research show that there are four types of illocutionary performed by the English teacher in classroom communication. They are representatives, expressives, directives, and commissives. The directives are the most frequent acts, while the commissives are the fewest frequent acts. Furthermore, there are 18 types of illocutionary functions used by the English teacher, which include stating a fact, informing, explaining, agreeing, greeting, thanking, complimenting, joking, apologizing, commanding, requesting, suggesting, forbidding, questioning, permitting, encouraging, and threatening. Questioning is the most frequent function, while threatening is the fewest frequent function. To sum up, the dominant use of directive acts implies that the teacher dominates the conversation. Meanwhile, the purpose of the use of questioning is to activate students’ background knowledge and critical thinking.

Abstract

Generally, most English language learners believed that writing is the most difficult language skill to perform. In addition, some English teachers/lecturers experience difficulties to encourage and motivate their students to write. There are a number of reasons why sometimes many language learners find it difficult to perform writing skills. One of the reasons is that they are sometimes asked to write about the topics they have little knowledge of. Another reason is if they are not interested in the topics they are asked to write about. This paper aims at describing one way in which English teachers can help their students get as much out of activity as possible despite their writing experiences, that is through an excursion. An excursion is a great way of encouraging and motivating the students to practice their writing skills. Data were obtained through observation of the field trip and written tasks performed by 32 of the fourth semester students of English Education Study Program, in academic year 2016/2017 at Cokroaminoto University, Palopo. Data obtained were analyzed qualitatively. The result of the research reveals that an excursion is an appropriate way for tackling the written tasks which are sometimes daunting for English language learners to perform. Such activity facilitates the students to write enthusiastically since the students know the subject matter they are writing about. In addition, through several activities in an excursion, the students can improve their vocabulary command, increase their grammatical knowledge, develop their English language skills in general and build up their self-confidence, particularly in performing writing tasks.
