Abstract

The reviving of the presence, existence, and eugenics of the Aborigines become pivotal issue to be brought up in the literature. Since the coming of the settlers, the Aborigines have seemed to experience shifting identity; living as a nominal population over the settlers; and later on becoming the ones who are attached with the ‘exotic’ due to their uniqueness and scarcity in number compared to the majority. This condition, from being the natives who own the land into those who become the ‘rare’ in their own land, provokes crucial issues related to the Aboriginal identity, which is challenging to be further discussed. Through That Deadman Dance, Scott tries to resurrect the Aborigine’s identity, especially Noongar, in the midst of disappearing Aboriginal communities. This article is aimed at revealing the identity of Noongar people by selecting and grouping the textual data in the novel which portray the Aborigines cultural experience and their indigenity. Later on, the data were investigated based on Muecke’s concept of connectedness to approach the problem. Accordingly, the narrative presented by Scott indicates that he has offered an alternative to view Aborigine’s identity which is potentially unsettling; thus, this finding seems to challenge the prescribed identity of Noongar corresponded by the major society.

Abstract

This article discusses a humor show which was initially aired on YouTube channel entitled “Bocah Ngapa(K) Ya”. This show particularly brings out humorous content with local dialects and exhibits local nuances of the Ngapak-speaking community.  This phenomenological quality expressed by the Ngapak-speaking community as ‘self’ is understood as locality through which it connects the identity of the Ngapak-speaking community with a wider audience (global society). However, the locality displayed through such kind of shows can potentially perpetuate stereotyped identity. Thus, this article examines locality displayed in a particular humor show namely “Bocah Ngapa(K) Ya” which offers an alternative identity of the Ngapak-speaking community. Central to the analysis is an argumentation that the depiction of Ngapak people in “Bocah Ngapa(K) Ya” subverts their stereotyped identity. The purpose of this study is to reveal hierarchical identities and to present an alternative to view this local identity based on the local context and humor delivery in the humor show. The method employed is cultural studies approach in order to view this cultural phenomenon. Through this study, it is found that the locality performed in this humor indicates a contemporary identity for the Ngapak people in the current era, which posits Ngapak people beyond their prevailing identity.

Abstract

This study aims at revealing how the discursive practices and the discourse on alcoholism in the Native Americans is produced and contested in a short story entitled The Reckoning by Joy Harjo. The problem in this study is approached by Foucauldian concept of discourse production procedure. The method applied here is the Foucauldian discourse analysis by examining the problem through the process of formation including external and internal exclusion. Central to the analysis is that alcoholism is produced as taboo through the mother character which limits the general understanding about alcoholism; hence this discourse is possible to produce by the subject whose credentials can validate the truth. This discourse is also affirmed by the contextual prohibition which authoritatively can state the truth about alcoholism. This is further contested in the current society of how being an alcoholic would be considered as a non-native American way of life. The result indicates that alcoholism among Native American society becomes the discourse within which constraints produce considerable barriers to expose or address to this topic

Abstract

The research aims to figure out factors causing Ellen, the main character of Noxon’s movie entitled To the Bone, experiences anorexia. The qualitative method is used to collect, interpret, and analyze data. Reading, rereading, collecting, sorting, grouping, interpreting, and analyzing are steps conducted to get the primary data taken from the movie. In addition, the researcher applied Psychology of Literature Theory, Anorexia Nervosa Theory, and Cinematography Theory to answer the research question. The result of this research shows that Ellen’s anorexia is caused by two factors. The first is internal factors (being stress, feeling lonely, and experiencing depression). This factor cannot be seen from other’s viewpoints, but it can be felt by Ellen only. The second is external factors because of her parents’ divorce. The divorce makes Ellen lack of affection and attention. This divorce also causes poor communication between Ellen and her parents. Thus, those two internal factors lead Ellen feels isolated and also makes Ellen’s self-esteem suffered which finally render Ellen experiences anorexia.

Abstract

This paper aimed to examine the depiction of the monstrous feminine in two horror flms, 2009’s Jennifer’s Bodyand 2015’s The Witch, by investigating how horror flms confront transgression through the construction of woman as a monstrous fgure in the story. The theory of abjection proposed by Julia Kristeva and of the monstrous feminine by Barbara Creed were used in the analysis. The main data were taken from these two flms, focusing on the characterization and narrative aspects. It was found that the depiction of the monstrous feminine in both flms was through the use of monstrous acts and images. The way in which these flms constructed monstrosity indicates female transgression of patriarchal boundaries, specifcally on the issue of gender identity and religiosity. The transgression emphasizes that there is no absolute identity, and thus boundaries are disrupted due to this fluid identity

Abstract

Japan becomes one of the countries that has been producing worldwide popular culture, namely through anime. Besides its popularity which attracts wider audiences, anime cultivates cultural content as it is also found in popular anime entitled “Kimi no Na wa”. Aside from its popular culture, Japan has undoubtedly been known for its ‘high culture’ products such as haiku or Zen, to which Japanese identity is attached. Then, the content of Japanese locality performed in the anime highlights some crucial issues related to Japanese identity, including the problematic relationship between traditionality and modernity, generations, and genders. Thus, the local content in the anime is interesting to scrutinize how traditional values are depicted and negotiated concerning Japanese identity. Since this study is descriptive-qualitative research, it answers the problem by describing the phenomenon and employing the interpretative method by Hall’s concept of identity. The selected data related to locality and identity obtained from the movie and poster are grouped and approached by Hall’s semiotic representation to see the relation to its significations. Finally, this brings out the interpretation of the data indicating that the anime portrays the ‘return’ to local culture. It is referred to as ‘nihonjinron’, which is particularly emphasized in youth life. Through this film, the identity is negotiated. The characters (Taki and Mitsuha) perform post-modern subjects; a case in point accepts the changes as they develop their identity in the current era.

Abstract

This paper investigates depictions of the world in two travel stories by Agustinus Wibowo in Selimut Debu (2010) and Jihan Davincka in Memoar of Jeddah (2013). The dissimilarity of both stories particularly in projecting the view of the world does not only accentuate different nuances but also the propensity of authors’ observations towards the objects they encounter such as places, people, and culture. Therefore, this study focuses on how travel writings own distinct ways in narrating the story of the author’s journey. In accordance with the problem, this study employed theoretical concepts proposed by Thompson specifically about reporting the world; that travel writers have certain tendency in their descriptions of the objects they see and involvement of the ‘self’ during the journey. This study then explores these two works to seek the data indicating the subjectivity to be sequentially selected and analysed. Eventually, it is found that Selimut Debu performs alteration in the involvement of the ‘self’; while Memoar of Jeddah emphasises more on personal involvement.
