Abstract

This study was aimed at finding analysis of conversational implicature in a drama ?the bear? by Anton Chekhov and its application in English language teaching". This research was conducted in a descriptive qualitative method. The source of data is a script of drama, The sampling technique used was purposive for the sample is chosen based on a certain purpose to reach the objective of this research. The data analyzed based on the theory?s Grace (1975), Yule (2005), Levinson (1992), Jacob L. Mey (1998) and Paltridge (2000). And then each Extract was analyzed based on Types and functions of conversational implicature. After that, the real data are displayed using table and particular. Here, the researcher analyzed several applications of conversational implicature in drama. In analyzing the data the researcher finds the idea from the drama that can be used for improving speaking the students in English language teaching. Based on the analysis, the outcome of this study indicated that all Grice?s proposed conversational implicatures applied to the drama entitled ?The Bear?. 28 utterances are consisting of 9 types of generalized conversational implicature, 5 types of particularized conversational implicature, 2 functions of self-protections, 6 functions of power and politeness, 3 functions of giving information, 1 function of entertain the audience and 2 functions of lack specific information. The study was enriching the knowledge of conversational implicature for the teachers and students who should be able to improve speaking skill in teaching-learning activity.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the main purposes of language learning in that it is an ability to transfer some ideas to other people clearly and correctly. In other words, he or she can communicate his or her ideas well to other people. As speaking dominates all activities in the English subject, the language components, namely pronunciation, fluency and vocabulary should also be learnt to support the language skills.  Based on the English teacher interview result that small group discussion have never been used by the teachers, speaking skill on the eighth grade students of junior high school of SMP Darul Muhajirin, so it was necessary to conduct a research in this school. The research design was quasi experimental. It began from conducting homogeneity test, deciding the experimental class and the control class, giving activities to the control class using the common technique and material usually applied by the English teacher and treatments to the experimental class that was using small group discussion in teaching speaking, then giving the same post-test to both classes, and the last analyzing the results of the post-test by using t-test. The result of this research The analysis of the post test results showed that there was a significant effect of using small group discussion that of speaking skill the experimental class got higher mean score than the control class (65, 1>57, 5) of the students’ speaking skill. Then, the result of data analysis using SPSS showed that the t-test value (2-tailed) 0.000, was less than 0.05.is expected to provide useful information for the English teacher to use interesting materials, that is, small group discussion in the English teaching learning process, especially in teaching speaking, since the small group discussion have never been used at SMPN Darul Muhajirin.

Abstract

There are 13 types of texts in English, but English teachers rarely teach spoof texts because most teachers are more focused on descriptive text, procedure text, etc. So, students' understanding of spoof texts was very low, even most students don’t know what the spoof text is, and they are not accustomed to producing texts. The Problem Based Learning approach was chosen to make it easier for teachers to help students produce texts. Therefore, this present study aims to analyze students’ abilities in producing spoof texts by using a problem-based learning approach. This research used qualitative descriptive and selected class XI students as a sample of this research. Data collection in this study used the following instruments: observation, interviews, and questionnaires to analyze the data in descriptive qualitative form. Based on the results, this study can conclude that the level of students’ ability to produce spoof texts after applying the Problem Based Learning Approach at the post-test is a complete category. It was proved that an average score of 73.9 and the highest score of 86. The percentage test of students' completeness was 78%, i.e., 14 of 22 students are included in the complete category. In comparison, 22% are not included in the complete category, meaning that students still need improvement.

Abstract

According to the school-based curriculum (K-13) there are several types of texts that students study. Descriptive text is one of the texts that must be mastered by students. Descriptive text is a general text that students already know, but most students are still confused when they want to describe something. Writing is an important skill, but in reality there are still many students who have difficulty writing a sentence and making it into a perfect paragraph. This study aims to improve students' writing skills in descriptive texts by using Think-Ahead and Write (TAW) strategies in class XI SMA. The use of Think-Ahead and Write (TAW) strategy is an effort that is needed to improve students' learning abilities, especially to improve students' writing skills. Think-Ahead and Write (TAW) is a strategy that can help students understand the concept of writing to develop students' thinking skills. Using this type of descriptive qualitative research and as a sample the students of class XI SMAN 1 Batukliang were selected. Data collection in this study used the following instruments: observation, interviews and questionnaires to analyze the data in descriptive qualitative form. More specifically, this research is expected to be able to describe (1.) whether the teacher is able to implement or not teach descriptive text writing skills using the TAW strategy; (2) how teachers implement TAW strategies in learning; (3) Students' understanding in producing descriptive text using TAW strategy. This research is planned for 1 year, while the mandatory output target of this research is to publish articles in accredited national journals ranked 1-6. This research is at TKT 2. This research is expected to be a window for further studies or references to explore the potential benefits and challenges of the Think-Ahead And Write (TAW) strategy itself in learning to write descriptive texts, especially for secondary education (SMA).

Abstract

This article aims to define the factors of students’ speaking anxiety and how the students’ strategies to overcome speaking anxiety in the class room. The problem in this research is anxiety of tenth grade students SMK to speak in classroom. Based on the issues above, the purpose of this researcher is to define the factor causing of speaking anxiety and how the students' strategies to overcome speaking anxiety. This research is qualitative descriptive. The subject in this study is tenth grade of SMK in Academic year 2020/2021. The totally number is 22 students. The data collected by Interview and questionnaire. The results showed that the factor causing of the students' speaking anxiety to speak in the language classroom are: lack of familiarity of task, fear of making mistakes, low motivation, incomprehensible inputs, lack of confidence and then low English proficiency. And the student’s strategies to overcome speaking anxiety were peer seeking, preparation, relaxation, positive thinking and resignation.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the influence of genre-based instructional model in the teaching of writing skills viewed from students’ text exposition. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design. The samples consisted of two classes in which one class was treated by using genre-based instructional (GBI) model and the second class was subjected to the process-based instruction (PBI) model. The writing exposition text were functioned as research instruments to collect the data in both classes. The data were analyzed by using the multifactor analysis of variance (ANOVA). The research finding informed that the GBI model was more influence than the PB model I. It was proved with the value of Process-Based Instruction (56) was lower than Genre Based Instruction (69). It means that the used of Genre Based instructional model have influence in writing skills exposition text. The finding indicates that there is significant interaction between instructional being applied in the teaching of writing skill exposition text.

Abstract

Reading ability is an important skill that has to be acquired by students, especially in English. Regardless of that fact, we from Institut Pendidikan Nusantara Global team took initiative to conduct training that can assist students to overcome students reading ability by the theme Teaching Reading—Based Phonics Approach. This activity is carried out at the seventh graders (VII) of MTs NW Tanak Beak Barat. The methods we used in this community service are observation, socialization with the school stockholders, and doing the program. The result of this program is that there is an improvement in students’ reading ability at the seventh graders (VII) of MTs NW Tanak Beak Barat. In addition, there is an improvement in the students’ motivation after learning English through Phonics—Based Approach, so that students are not pressured and enjoy the learning activity.

Abstract

Tridarma perguruan tinggi merupakan sebuah kewajiban bagi setiap perguruan tinggi di Indonesia. Tri darma perguruan tinggi yang dimaksud adalah pengajaran, penelitian dan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Dua dari tiga tridarma yang dapat dikatakan wajib adalah penelitian dan pengabdian kepada mayarakat dimana hasil dari tridarma ini harus menghasilkan target luaran berupa sebuah artikel. Untuk memenuhi artikel dibutuhkan pemahaman tentang Oprations Journal System (OJS) untuk menunjang publikasi karya ilmiah yang dihasilkan. Pengabdian ini berjudul pelatihan oprations journal system (ojs) dalam meningkatkan publikasi jurnal ilmiah dosen di lingkungan institut pendidikan nusantara global. kegiatan Ini ditujukan untuk meningkatkan publikasi dosen di lingkungan kampus. Hasil dari kegiatan ini dapat dilihat bahwa terdapat peningkatan yang signifikan antara hasil sebelum melakukan pelatihan dan setelah pelatihan sebesar 71%. Hal ini dilihat dari pemahaman peserta tentang jurnal dan cara mengoprasikan oprasional jurnal system. Pada kegiatan ini juga peserta sangat antusias dalam melaksanakan kegiatan ini sehingga dapat dikatakan bahwa pelatihan ini berhasil.

Abstract

The objective of this research was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of peer reviewing in improving the students’ writing ability in recount text.   The method of the research was quasi-experimental design with control and experimental group and post-test only. The population of this research was the entire eight grade students of SMPN 1 Pringgarata. The cluster random sampling was used in the sampling technique. There were two classes of eight grade students as the sample of this research. They were VIII A that consists of 32 students as the control class and VIII B that consists of 30 students as the experimental class. Test and questionnaire were the instruments of this research. The data collected from the tests were analyzed by using independent sample t test and MANOVA through SPSS.   Results show that the independent sample t-test was 0.001 for motivation and 0.000 for the writing ability. Moreover, the result of MANOVA test was 0.000. The results were consulted to the score of the significant value generated Sig. (Pvalue) < α = 0.05. Thus, Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. In other words, the result of the study revealed that peer review gave significant effect to the students’ wriying ability in recount text. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect to the students’ writing ability who taught using peer review.
