Abstract

Flexible denture is a removable partial denture made of flexible material and can adapt well to the oral tissues. Color stability is one of the basic properties of denture that is needed in achieving good aesthetics. Intrinsic and extrinsic factors can affect the basic denture's color changes. Extrinsic factors can be stain due to the absorption of pigments of dyes from exogenous sources such as denture cleansing solutions, food and beverages, length of use of materials either due to physical or chemical conditions, such as temperature changes. Intrinsic factors include chemical changes in the material itself, among others, due to the imperfect polymerization process, material pollution in the process of making the material or its processing, due to the chemical reaction within the material itself and various processing techniques resulting in the occurrence of porosity on the surface of the material to facilitate the accumulation of dirt. This study aims to observe the color change of the flexible denture base made of nylontermoplastic. The sample of this study used 30 flexible denture base plates measuring 10 mm x 10 mm x 2 mm, soaked at different temperatures of 40 ° C, 50 ° C and 60 ° C for 1 minute, 3 minutes and 5 minutes in each group . The media used is waterbath as a temperature control and then processed using Adobe Photoshop with CIELab method. The results showed significant color changes in the 37 ° C temperature control group with temperatures of 40 ° C, 50 ° C and 60 ° C (p <0.05). Medium between 40 ° C, 50 ° C and 60 ° C has no significant difference (p> 0,05). The conclusion is that the higher of the temperature and the duration of soaking time have a significant effect on the color change of flexible denture.

Abstract

Plaque accumulation on removable denture mayinduce Denture Stomatitis (DS). Candida albicans is the main microorganism that causes DS. To prevent DS, dentures need to be cleaned. The simplest denture cleaning method is immersion using chemicals. Papaya leaf (Carica papaya) contain antifungi substance, could be used as denture cleanser. The aim of this study wasto prove the effectivity of papaya leaf extract todecreasing the number of Candida albicans colonies on acrylic resin plates and thermoplastic nylon. This study was pretest-posttest with control group design, 32 samples (16 acrylic resin plates, 16 thermoplastic nylon plates) were divided into 4 groups: immersion using aquadest, fittydent®, papaya leaf extract 10% and 40%. Paired T-test showed the means of Candida albicans number on acrylic resin plates after immersion of aquadest, fittydent®, papaya leaf extract 10% and 40% were 0.75+2.98 CFU/ml, 82.5+1.29, 53.5+3.31 CFU/ml, 81.5+2.38 CFU/ml. The means of Candida albicans number on thermoplastic nylon after immersion of aquadest, fittydent®, papaya leaf extract 10% and 40% were 0.5+1.73 CFU/ml, 82.25+2.21 CFU/ml, 70.25+3.3 CFU/ml, 80.50+3.69 CFU/ml. Oneway ANOVA test showed no significant differences number of Candida albicans colonies (p >0.05) after immersion using fittydent® and papaya leaf extract 40% on both plates (100% Candida albicans cells died after immersion). The decrease percentage shown in the immersion of papaya leaf extract 10% group (66.67% on acrylic resin plates and 87.8% on thermoplastic nylon). This study concluded that papaya leaf extract was effective in decreasing the number of Candida albicans colonies on acrylic resin plates and thermoplastic nylon.

Abstract

Nutrition, diet and dental health have strong association especially for children who are in the growth and development phase. Healthy and adequate nutrition play vital role to support dental health in children. Dental caries is one of the most frequent chronic infections in children and also has significant connection with nutrition aspect. The behaviour of high sugar food and beverage intake, fast food consumption, and frequent snacks consumption between meals increase the risk of dental caries. Overweight and obesity are also can increase the risk of dental caries in children. Usage of fluoride and xylitol as the prevention of dental caries. Another important prevention steps in reducing the risk of dental caries in children include limiting intake of sugar, fast food, snacks, and soda drink. Problems dental health of children in Indonesia is still a public health problem. Deficiency of energy, protein, vitamins A, C, D, folic acid, minerals Fe, Zn, Ca, P, F cause abnormalities in the teeth. WHO have included F as one of the essential nutrients in the prevention of dental caries. Anticariogenic diet are milk and its products like cheese. Cariogenic diet are carbohydrates that can be fermented by microorganisms such as sweet foods, candy, soda and fast food.

Abstract

Dimensional accuracy of the impression model is very important in determining the success of denture treatment. The choice of printing technique is a factor that has a big influence on the printout. Digital impression and double impression techniques have good dimensional stability and provide accurate print details on the working model. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of dimensional accuracy of the digital impression and double impression models in the manufacture of bridge dentures. The research materials used were polyvinyl siloxanes elastomeric impression materials, stone gypsum type IV and aquades. The tools used are the master model, physiological printing spoon, glass stirrer, lekron, bowl spatula, calipers and 3D laser scanner. This research method used a laboratory experimental study design, and the master model was imprinted on the simulation of two abutments using digital impression and double impression techniques. The results showed that the digital impression technique showed a significant difference measured from the mesiodistal distance with the smallest value -0.004, the largest 0.011, the average difference 0.0369, at the occlusogingival distance the smallest value -0.003, the largest 0.009, the average difference 0.0375 , and the smallest value of interbutment distance is -0.001 and the largest is 0.000, and the average difference is -0.00031. The double impression technique showed a significant difference measured from the mesiodistal distance, the smallest value was -0.004, the largest was 0.011, the average difference was 0.00663, at the occlusogingival distance the smallest value was -0.014, the largest was 0.003, the average difference was 0.00300, and the interabutment distance was the smallest -0.001, the largest 0.003, and the average difference 0.00044. The conclusion of this study is that the digital impression technique is more accurate than the double impression technique in making denture bridges.

Abstract

Betel (Piper betle Linn.) is available in most of South and Southeast Asia. Betel leaves has the function of healing wounds in traditional Balinese medicine. This habit of chewing fresh betel leaves which are wrapped together with the areca nut, mineral, catechu and tobacco, is traditionally known as “nginang”. The several research stated that the habit of chewing betel leaf together with tobacco and areca nut has led to oral cancer. This paper aims to inform readers that chewing betel leaf is actually beneficial for health, as long as it is consumed without tobacco and areca nut. This paper focuses on the prevent orodental disease, and COVID-19. This systematic review was conducted through three steps: (1) A search (on Pubmed, Google scholar and other journal databases with published articles from 2009 to 2020); (2) Read the title and abstract of the individual papers; (3) Determine whether these articles were from diverse backgrounds. The nutritional content of the betel leaves for orodental health and anti-COVID-19 are protein, essential oils, carbohydrate, vitamin A, B and C and mineral like Mg, K, Ca, Fe, I, P and Zn. Betel leaves contains potassium potential nutrition and antioxidants including chevibetol and allylpyrocatechol, act as anti-COVID-19. Betel helps to cure various orodental diseases such as mouth cancer, cariogenic, sores, toothache, halitosis etc. The researcher concluded that “nginang”, chewing of fresh young betel leaves without areca nut and tobacco is very good to be continued, because of its many benefits and very good properties, especially for overcoming orodental disease and COVID-19.
