Abstract

Background: Quality sleep is needed by breast cancer patients in order to maintain good physical condition and immune system. Nurses have a role as educators who provide health education. Health education that can be given is non-pharmacological therapy, namely music therapy and PMR to improve sleep quality. Health education for patients is felt to be very important considering that patients are not always hospitalized so that it is hoped that with health education, patients can carry out care independently at home. Methods: The way of implementing community service activities is carried out by exposing non-pharmacological therapies with nurses who are in charge of the chemotherapy room. After being given the material, the selected nurse will apply the therapy to the patient in order to improve the quality of sleep for breast cancer patients who are given chemotherapy. Results: The provision of music therapy and PMR had a positive effect on breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Most of the patients involved in this service reported an improvement in the quality of sleep.Discussion: Good quality sleep is needed by breast cancer patients to regenerate and repair body cells. Music therapy combined with PMR is effective in reducing physical arousal activity which results in decreased muscle tone so that sleep quality can be fulfilled.

Abstract

Background : In the last five years, the prevalence of breast cancer in Indonesia has increased. The usual treatment for breast cancer is chemotherapy, which can cause physical problems that affect sleep quality. Sleep disorders are often experienced by breast cancer patients, where the impact affects the healing of the cancer and the immune system so that the condition and immune system cannot be maintained optimally in repairing body cells. Purpose: to determine the quality of sleep in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and to see which components have contributed to disturbing sleep quality. Methods: The study used a quantitative descriptive approach. Sampling technique accidental sampling with 100 respondent. The questionnaire used to measure sleep quality was the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. The data analysis technique used univariate analysis, there are two interpretations on the PSQI. Sleep quality is good if the score is ≤ 5, sleep quality is bad if the score is> 5. Results: Most of the respondents have poor sleep quality. This research is expected to increase the role of nursing care and educator so that it can improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy

The effects of music therapy and progressive muscle relaxation training on the quantity and quality of sleep, as well as on levels of anxiety and fatigue, in patients undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine the effects of MUSKAR-T (combination of music therapy and progressive muscle relaxation training) on sleep quality, anxiety, and fatigue in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: The study employed a two-group, pre- and post-test experimental design. Patients in the intervention group had two sessions of 30-minutes of music therapy and progressive muscular relaxation per day for five days prior to hospital discharge. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), State Trait Anxiety Index (STAI), and Cancer-related Fatigue Assessment (C-RAFA) were used to evaluate the results (CFS). Anxiety, tiredness, and sleep quality were measured and compared between groups using a univariate approach that also took into account the effects of group, time, and the interaction of group and time. Results: This study had 100 participants, 50 in the intervention group and 50 in the control group. The majority of respondents were married (70 percent), unemployed (24 percent), had completed at least middle school (68 percent), were not menopausal (76 percent), and had illness at stage III (46 percent ). The intervention group’s anxiety, fatigure, and sleep quality scores fell to 76.1112.42, 45.1214.76, and 4.363.36 on the day preceding hospital discharge. Conclusions: The culturally-based music therapy and progressive muscle relaxation effective for reducing anxiety, fatigue, and enhancing the quality of sleep in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
