Abstract

Abstract

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung illness with the main complaints of breathlessness and decreased activitiestolerance, which consequentially worsen the quality of life (QoL). COPD management aims to improve the QoLby means of rehabilitation programs. Objective: The study focused on determining the impact of physical activity(6-Minute Walk Test/6-MWT)and the combination of Pursed-Lip Breathing (PLB) before 6-MWTon COPD patients’QoL. Methods: This study occupieda quasi-experimentaldesign, which involved70 respondents, divided into 3 groups, i.e. 2 intervention groups (30 respondents each) and one control group (10 respondents). Results:The majority of respondents were male (71%), aged 60-74 (56%), had normalBMI (48%), and were former smokers (59%).After 6 weeks of intervention, meaningful differences were found in the QoLbefore and after the intervention in bothgroups:6-MWT(p=0.000) and combined (p=0.000). The ordinal logistic regression test resultedthe combined intervention hadstronger effect on the quality of life (p=0.000, 47.1% contribution) than 6-MWT (p=0.012, 35.8% contribution). Respondents’ characteristics that impacted on the quality of life were smoking history and period of CPOD (p<0.05, OR: 11,376; OR: 49,75, respectively). Conclusion:It can be concluded that PLB before 6-MWT is an effective training to improve QoL of people with COPD. Keywords: pursed-lip breathing; QoL;COPD

Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality. The highest prevalence of cardiovascular disease is hypertension. Hypertension prevalence increases in 10 years and WHO predicts that it will always increase until 2030. Hypertension management is needed to prevent any complication and improve patient’s ability in their daily activity. Knowledge about hypertension management is based of healthy lifestyle that affected their quality of life. Objective: this study focused on determining the impact of education on respondent’s cognitive, affective, and psychomotor ability. Methods: this study occupied quasi-experimental design, which involve 40 respondents, divided into 2 groups i,e intervention group and control group (20 respondents each). Results: the majority of respondents were male (62.5%), aged 55-64 (50%), middle education (47.5%), non- smoker (55%), had no diet (62.5%). after 4 weeks, significant differences were found in cognitive, affective and psychomotor level before and after intervention in intervention group (p=0.002; p=0.012; p=0.001). compared to control group, there are significant differences in cognitive and psychomotor level (p=0.028; p=0.013). respondents’ characteristics that impacted on the dependent variable were education level, smoking habit, exercise, coping mechanism. Conclusion: education is an effective intervention to improve cognitive and psychomotor level of people with hypertension. Keywords: Education, hypertension, cognitive, psychomotor

Abstract

Respiratory disease is the leading cause of mortality. One cause that affects lung damage is environmental factors. The International Agency for Research on Cancer states that the air has been contaminated with carcinogenic substances including volcanic ash that consequence the harmful effects. Mount Merapi is a high volcanic activity mountain located in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Around Merapi, there are dense settlements so that volcanic particles will be inhaled and will cause respiratory problems. The study aims to determine the lung function in the population living in the Merapi zone. The study uses a quantitative method involving 32 respondents located at 15 Km from Merapi’s slope. Data collection was carried out for one week by the cross-sectional study. Descriptive data analysis on the short-term effects of volcanic ash exposure found that 50% of respondents experienced runny nose, 92.9% dry cough, 71.4% respiratory tract irritation at two weeks after exposure. Long-term effects found that 35.7% of respondents experienced cough with phlegm, 32.1% wheezing, 50% dyspnea, 50% shortness of breath gradation 5 according to MRC scale, and 82.1% experienced PEFR value decrease. Researchers suggest to routine health screening so that early detection of lung function can be reduced especially in the Merapi eruption zone.
