Abstract

Previous studies have shown that the majority of children in Indonesia have poor oral hygiene. Children who attend boarding school are sometimes facing difficulties in accessing dental health providers. In this kind of situation, knowledge of oral health and how to do a proper dental cleaning is crucial and must be mastered not only by students but also their teachers who spend most time with them at the boarding school. This goal can be achieved by the collaboration of dental public health and the school and community members.

Abstract

Abstract

Alcoholic beverages can be consumed in any group age, and it may be consumed by an individual using denture. Fluid absorption by heat-cured acrylic resin as a material of a denture base was able to cause an increase in its surface roughness. Absorption of an organic solvent such as the ethanol in an alcoholic beverage(s) could even increase the effect. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of alcohol beverages on surface roughness of heat-cured acrylic resin denture base. Samples (n=24) were prepared from heat-cured acrylic resin (25x25x5 mm). They were divided into 4 groups and the pre-test surface roughness was measured. Samples of each group were immersed for 10 minutes into the solution (distilled water as the control group, beer, wine, and whiskey as the test groups). After stored in artificial saliva for 23 hours, the samples were immersed into the solution, completing a period of 24 hours. This procedure was performed for 7 consecutive days and the post-test surface roughness was measured. Data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Walis test. There was a significant difference in surface roughness measurement before and after the immersion (p<0.05). Whiskey was most affecting the surface roughness of heat-cured acrylic resin denture base. Alcoholic beverages could increase the surface roughness of heat cure acrylic resin denture base. Keywords: Alcoholic beverages; Heat-cured acrylic denture base; Surface roughness

Abstract

Abstract

Streptococcus mutans is a microorganism that important in dental caries. Herbs are known to have antibacterial activity against oral bacteria. The rhizomes of Curcuma longa and Curcuma zedoaria are two of the eight species of genus Curcuma that are most widely used as traditional herbal medicine in Indonesia. Both rhizomes have antibacterial activity against oral bacteria at a concentration of 12.5%. This study aimed to examine the inhibitory of Curcuma longa and Curcuma zedoaria rhizomes extracts against the growth of Streptococcus mutants. The study was in vitro study. Both rhizomes got from the Experimental Garden of Balittro Manoko Lembang, West Java, Indonesia. The maceration was employed to obtain the extracts with the final extracts of both rhizomes at a concentration of 12.5%. Antibacterial activity test was carried out by using the agar well diffusion method. The positive control group was 0.2% Chlorhexidine and distilled water as a negative control group. The data obtained were then analyzed using the One Way ANOVA Test and Post Hoc Test. Results showed that chlorhexidine 0.2% had the largest mean diameter of the inhibition zone. Curcuma longa rhizome extract had a larger mean diameter of inhibition zone compared to Curcuma zedoaria rhizome extract. However, the difference in the mean values of the two rhizomes extracts was not statistically significant. Distilled water didn't have antibacterial activity. It can be concluded that both Curcuma longa and Curcuma zedoaria rhizomes extracts at a concentration of 12.5% have antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans. Abstract

Glass ionomer cement (GIC), restorative material in dentistry, are composed of glass powders and polyacrylic acid. GIC can release fluoride that acts as an antibacterial. Various study had been conducted to improve that antibacterial properties, but it can affect the physical and mechanical properties of GIC. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of addition of triclosan antibacterial agent on the setting time of GIC. To obtain 2.5 % triclosan, 0,25 gram of triclosan powder was mixed into 9,75 gram of GIC powder. The sample was divided into 2 groups: control group (n=16) and treatment group (n=16). The setting time was measured using gilmore needle, by penetrating a needle to the surface of specimens with an interval of 10 seconds until the needle left no traces on the surface of specimens. Statistical analysis was done byT-test. The result showed that p value > 0,05. The conclusion is the addition of triclosan antibacterial agent do not affect the setting time of GIC

Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a bioceramic with excellentbiocompatible properties, and composition and crystal structure similar to apatite in the human dental structure and skeletal system. A number of researchers have attempted to evaluate the effect of the addition of HA powders to increasemechanical properties of restorative dental materials. In this study, HA was synthesized using chicken eggshell as calcium source for synthesizing HA by using precipitation technique. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of incorporation of eggshell-derived HA on the surface hardness GIC (Fuji IX GP). Specimens were divided into two groups: group GIC without incorporation of HA as control group (n = 16) and group GIC with incorporation of 5% HA as experimental group (n = 16). Total of specimens were 32 cylinders 5mm diameter and 2mm height. Surface hardness GIC was measured with vickers microhardness tester. Data wasanalyzed by unpaired T-test. The mean of surface hardness for GIC control group was 51.37 ± 1,63VHN and the experimental group was 56.60 ± 1,22HVN. The results T-test showed a significant difference between groups (p<0.05). It can be concluded thatincorporation of eggshell-derivedHA could increasesurface hardness of GIC.

Abstract

Bond strength of tissue conditioner (temporary soft denture liner material ) on an acrylic denture base could be affected on the adhesion between these two materials by water solution such as chemical denture cleanser. Cinnamaldehyde contained in cinnamon plant extract (Cinnamomum burmani) is one of the natural agents that can be recommended as a denture cleanser and expected to have a smaller impact on  the mechanical properties of material. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of immersion time in plant extract denture cleanser containing cinnamaldehyde on the bond strength of tissue conditioner to acrylic resin. Method: Twenty four rectangular acrylic soft denture liner samples (64 mm x 10 mm x 2,5 mm (ISO 1567:1988)) were divided into 4 groups : group I and II, 1.5 % cinnamon extract  immersions (for 7 days and 14 days); group III and IV, aquadest immersions (for 7 days and 14 days). The measurements of samples’s bond strength were done using the Universal Testing Machine on the last day of each group after immersion. The results were submitted to one-way ANOVA and post hoc Bonferroni. Results: There was a significant difference between all groups (p<0.05). The highest average of sample’s bond strength was shown by group III and IV followed by group I and II, respectively. Conclusion: There was effect of immersion time in cinnamon extract denture cleanser on the bond strength of tissue conditioner to acrylic resin
