Abstract

OF BUILDING ENVELOPE PERFORMANCE ON AGAPE BUILDING UNIVERSITAS KRISTEN DUTA WACANA YOGYAKARTA In response to the worldwide issue about climate change and global warming, architecture should play a role to protecting the environment by presenting high performance building designs. This kind of building can provide optimal comfort for its occupants without sacrificing the quality of the surrounding environment. The character of Indonesia's tropical climate, causes high environmental temperatures, thus potentially causing discomfort for building occupants. The effort to increase comfort will certainly require high energy consumption, so it is necessary to consider about energy conservation strategies to minimize negative impact on the environment. As a part of Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana area, Agape is an office building that uses air conditioning system. After being used for 12 years, this building has a satisfactory evaluation about the thermal comfort from the occupants. However, it is believed that the building still has considerable potential of energy saving through the performance of the building envelope. This study aims to evaluate performance of Agape Building’s envelope in term of heat transfer reduction and determine strategies that can be applied to reduce the Overall Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) value to support energy conservation. Indonesian National Standards (SNI) about building’s energy conservation determine a maximum OTTV value of 35 W/m2. Based on calculation, the OTTV value of Agape Building was obtained 49,06 W/m2, has not been able to reach the SNI standard. Several strategies to reduce the OTTV value have been simulated by modifying the opening material and adjusting the window to wall ratio, so that in the end the OTTV value could meet the standards, 34,86 W/m2.

Taman Sari is the resting place of the King as well as a place of defense that was built during the reign of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. The area, which consists of several heritage buildings, has become one of the important sites in Yogyakarta in terms of supporting city tourism. The heritage atmosphere in the Taman Sari area is a special attraction that can attract tourists' interest. Taman Sari has a soundmark that has implications for the hearing experience of tourists, as well as supports the heritage atmosphere. Currently, the soundmark in Taman Sari is considered weak, thereby reducing the atmosphere felt by visitors. This study discusses the identification of sound behavior on the Taman Sari site, which aims to determine the location of the sound source that can affect the tourism atmosphere in the audial aspect. The methodology was based on the simulation of sound movement using Ecotect software. The dimensions and materials of the space enclosure are adjusted to the conditions at the location by mapping the type of material and the location of the existing voice identity. The simulation results will be analyzed in relation to the theory of sound distribution. Based on the analysis, it is known that softscape and hardscape elements affect the character of voice behavior in Taman Sari. The sound behavior found at the location is the sound reflection which partially produces echoes and direct sounds that can be heard by tourists in various segments. The results of this study are expected to enhance the tourist experience at cultural heritage sites through improving the quality of the area's audial aspects.

Abstract

In recent years, climate change has become a global phenomenon faced all over the world. This situation potentially has a significant impact on the quality of the environment and the resident’s quality of life. Discussing the environmental quality cannot be separated from the settlement area, which is the place for people’s daily lives. The quality of a settlement area is one of the factors that determine the quality of human life. Especially after experiencing a pandemic period for more than 2 years, the need for a comfortable and healthy living environment is increasing. One of the environmental comfort levels can be observed from the quality of the microclimate. A good microclimate will play a role in maintaining the health of residents and also the quality of the environment to prevent climate change. This study aims to identify a correlation between the physical elements of settlement and the quality of microclimate. The study was conducted in two settlement areas, namely Baciro and Suryatmajan, located in the city of Yogyakarta. These two areas have different characteristics in terms of settlement patterns, which is one of the factors that influence the microclimate. The method used is direct observation and field measurement for the data related to the microclimate and physical elements in the settlement area. The results show that each physical element of the settlement will affect each other in terms of creating the quality of microclimate, so it cannot be relying on just one variable. This result can be used as an essential consideration to propose design strategies for a healthy, comfortable, and sustainable human settlement.

Abstract

Title: The Effectiveness of Urban Farming for Urban Heat Island Mitigation in Urban Areas   Urban farming and greenery are the emerging idea in maintaining a sustainable environment in term of economic, social, and environmental aspects. The existence of urban farming is primarily aimed to maintaining food security for the community, especially in the pandemic crisis. Moreover, the high rate of urbanization also affects the transformation of urban space, which is one of the factors causing climate change. The integration of vegetation in urban area is considered to be a strategy to maintain the quality of the microclimate and reducing the intensity of the urban heat island. This study aims to observe the effectiveness of urban farming/greenery in maintaining the microclimate quality at District of Tompeyan Yogyakarta, which is well known for their urban farming integrated inside the residential areas. Using field measurement and simulation methods, the results show that the vegetation in the outdoor space have a significant impact, especially related to surface temperature and air temperature. The simulation using ENVI-MET shows that there is an increase in the thermal comfort index in the areas with vegetation, although it has not yet reached the ideal value. This represents how the role of vegetation in urban heat island mitigation to provide a comfortable and sustainable environment. The study can be further developed regarding the impact of other physical elements on microclimate to be the foundation for spatial planning recommendations.

Abstract

After the COVID-19 pandemic, people began to embrace flexible working and coworking space became one of the comfortable work spaces. The culture of "work from anywhere" has begun to be commonly applied in various business sectors. The  comfort of coworking  space has an impact on the need for high energy consumption. This study aims to evaluate the performance  of coworking space buildings  in terms of energy efficiency and user comfort. The method used is a quantitative method with mathematical calculation analysis and also software simulation. The research focuses on optimizing energy efficiency through the performance of the building envelope, then the parameters used are OTTV to show the level of heat conduction, IKE as the overall level of energy consumption, and spatial comfort in the visual aspect. The results of the existing evaluation show a fairly high energy consumption of 230 kWh / m2 / year. Several design strategies in an effort to improve the energy efficiency performance of buildings include modifying building envelope materials with low thermal conductivity (u-value) characteristics, as well as providing alternative shading designs for buildings to be able to reduce incoming heat more optimally. Simulations show that the recommended design strategy can reduce OTTV value by up to 50% and IKE value to 173 kWh/m2/year. Thus, energy efficiency strategies  with low u-value materials (reflective exterior layers, low-e glass with air gaps  and  green roofs) for building envelopes and passive design through shading device  design interventions are considered effective in supporting the needs of coworking space comfort standards.
