Abstract

One of worm infection is intestinal worms infection that are transmitted through the ground or often called Soil Transmitted helminths (STH). Soil Transmitted Helminth can infest humans of all ages , especially in children . This study aimed to examine the prevalence of worm infections in school children in Tanah Bumbu with cross sectional design . Research subjects are all students of class grade I - VI SDN 1 Harapan Maju Karang Bintang, Tanah Bumbu District. Result showed the prevalence of worm infection 16 %, which mostly occurs in girls (8.8 %) and in the group of age 9-11 years (6.8 %). Types of worms that infected the children are Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis and Hookworm . The highest infection caused by T. trichiura (8.8 %). Beside single infection, mixed infections was also found, indicating the possibility of poor personal and environmental sanitation level around the child.

Abstract

Fasciolopsiasis in Indonesia is endemic in Hulu Sungai Utara District, South Kalimantan. Problems in controlling this disease is to identify the snail that acts as an first intermediate host. Fasciolopsis buski intermediate host is determined by the presence of F. buski cercariae on the conch. Identification of cercariae using microscopic method can not ensure that was F. buski cercariae, so it is necessary to use a more accurate method. Therefore, the research aimed to identify F. buski cercariae using Polymerase Chain Reaction ( PCR ) to confirm the cercariae species and the first intermediate host snails of F. buski. Observational studies in the field and laboratory are conducted in March -December 2014. Snail samplings were taken place at Sungai Papuyu and Kalumpang Dalam villages. Cercariae PCR analys is was done at Molecular Biology Laboratory, Faculty of Science-Lambung Mangkurat University, Banjarbaru. Our field collections found 6 snail genus: Pomacea, Bellamya, Indoplanorbis, Lymnaea, Gyraulus, and Melanoides. Three species of cercariae obtained by microscopic examination consisted of Echinostome cercariae in Lymnaea and Indoplanorbissnail, Brevifurcate-pharyngeate cercariae in Lymnaea snail, and Sulcatomicrocercous cercariae in Bellamya snail. PCR analysis showed positive result of F. buski on Echinostome cercariae samples found from Lymnaea and Indoplanorbis snail. This finding have confirmed that both snails were the first intermediate host of F. buski at our sampling sites.

Abstract

Filariasis in South Kalimantan is still a problem, especially in rural areas, this is possible because there are still many potential places for vector breeding such as rice fields, forests and swamps. In Tanah Bumbu District, filariasis cases were reported as many as 38 cases where as many as 35 cases were found in Batulicin and Kusan Hilir Sub-districts, while as many as 3 recent cases in 2015 in Angsana District. The purpose of this study was to determine various types of mosquitoes, density, age, and habitat characteristics of potential mosquitoes as filariasis vectors in Binawara Village, Tanah Bumbu District. The study was carried out with descriptive observasional design and cross sectional approach in May 2018. Entomological surveys conducted included habitat surveys, mosquito capture by human bait, and surgery. The results showed the dominance of the habitat found was swamp. There were 12 species of mosquitoes caught i. e. Ma. uniformis, Ma. dives, Ma. bone, An. barbirostris, An. maculatus, Ae. linnetaopenis, Ae. albopictus, Ae. aegypti, Cx. sitiens,, Cx. crasipes, Cx. quinquefasciatus, and Cq. crassipes. The density of mosquitoes sucks the highest blood, Ma. dives, with a value of 4 mosquitoes / person / hour (MHD) and 3 mosquitoes / person / night (MBR). The results of surgery are high parity for Ma.dives, Ma.uniformis and Cx. quinquefasciatus shows that the mosquito has undergone a gonothrophic cycle with a relative age of mosquitoes that have the opportunity to be filariasis vectors. Longevity of mosquito age that should be suspected as filariasis vectors are 42.43 days for Ma.uniformis and 47.96 days for Cx. quinquefasciatus. Although filariasis transmission has not been proven in this study, but with the discovery of potential vectors and the discovery of positive patients, the awareness of filariasis transmission needs to be increased. In terms of increasing vector control of PHBS and self protection from mosquito bites (repellent and the use of closed clothing) can be a form of control in order to avoid filariasis transmission.
