Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the modified version of the Work Engagement Scale in the Indonesian context, by adding one aspect and test the effect of types of occupation using the multiple indicator multiple cause (MIMIC) model for testing measurement invariance. The sample of this study included 459 workers in Indonesia using 16 items of the Work Engagement Scale. The results revealed that Indonesian respondents have Asian characteristics, but they come from various ethnicities and cultures. By including university lecturers and industrial workers as respondents and performing confirmatory factor analysis followed by MIMIC model, it is discovered that Indonesian employees have satisfactory psychometric properties in all four dimensions, which comprise the constructs of the work engagement scale. The findings provide an insight into in the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) Model of work engagement in Indonesian context consisted of vigor, dedication, absorption, and contribution dimensions from theoretical understanding. MIMIC model gives an evidence that the occupation types can affect the factor structure of work engagement, indicating that measurement invariance are not hold.

Abstract

This study explores how the sense of community (SOC) is represented in online taxi driver communities. This study in Yogyakarta utilized qualitative descriptive research. Data collection was conducted using in-depth interview by snowball sampling method. Thematic analysis is used with theory-driven approach of SOC framework by McMillan and Chavis (1986). Nine male online taxi drivers were the participants. The findings show that all four SOC components are present: membership, influence, integration & need fulfillment, and shared emotional connection. Membership has permeable expanding boundaries with multiple membership and multilayered communities with conventional taxi drivers involvement. Bidirectional influence represents the influence component. Integration and needs fulfillment exists by their informational and helping shared values. Shared emotional connection is represented with the ‘brotherhood’ concept as their main community value. This study contributes to the literature on how sense of community is represented among informal workers amidst the heightened popularity of gig economy.

Abstract

Twitter as a social media has become increasingly used, including by its use by each Presidential candidate’s stronghold to launch a campaign to influence prospective voters’ electoral decisions in the 2019 Presidential Election in Indonesia. One strategy used in such a campaign on Twitter was by disseminating hashtags that were expected to become trending topics on Twitter. The dissemination of these hashtags aimed to build political rhetoric that can influence prospective voters’ electoral decisions. Thus, this study sought to explore the patterns of hashtags disseminated by each candidate’s stronghold to build political rhetoric and find out public sentiments in the posted Twitter contents. The number of tweets with #Jokowi2Periode and #2019GantiPresiden hashtags during the period of the 2019 Indonesian presidential and vice-presidential debates that were successfully downloaded using MAXQDA 18.1.1 software was 92,276. The research findings revealed that the distribution pattern of the #Jokowi2Periode hashtag tended to be more scattered (decentralized) by relying on the actor’s presentation and the actor’s speed in responding to tweets. In contrast, the spread of the #2019GantiPresiden hashtag was more centralized by relying on communication channels on Twitter. These two distribution patterns are discussed with the perspective of cyber psychology, through cuesfiltered-in and cues-filtered-out theories.

Abstract

Digital literacy capability is a must in the era of internet access, especially in the use of social media. All internet users, especially university students, must practice digital literacy. This study aims to found the common forms of university students' digital literacy behavior when using social media. This study uses a mixed-method approach as it consists of data search using a digital literacy scale, an open-ended questionnaire, and interviews with university students in Yogyakarta. The results of this study indicate that respondents with high digital literacy levels conduct a process of evaluating truthful information by checking trusted sources of information directly and discussing their findings with significant others. The likelihood and ability to evaluate information correctly is affected by family background, formal education, and negative hoax impact awareness. The study also found that after respondents perform across (double) checks, they will usually forward the information, also known as doing a repost. This research implies a description of digital literacy behavior carried out by students in Yogyakarta; with this study, digital literacy behavior expects to provide an overview of information technology policymakers.

Abstract

The development of national identity in a highly multicultural nation begins by identifying oneself to a particular ethnic group and realizing that multiculturalism is the bridge between both identities. This research aims to discover the link between national identity, ethnic identity, and multiculturalism in Indonesia, specifically for Javanese. This study utilized three measurement scales: (1) National Identity Scale to measure national identity; (2) Ethnic Identity Scale to measure the sense of belongingness to the Javanese ethnicity; and (3) Universal Diverse Orientation (UDO), to measure multiculturalism. This study's participants consist of 441 college students in Yogyakarta (male = 115; female = 326), ranging from 17 to 21. The regression analysis result shows that the mediation model supports this research hypothesis, namely that multiculturalism mediates the relationship between ethnic identity and national identity. Therefore, the current finding generates a new conception regarding the related theme.
