Abstract

Based on the observations' results, many graduate students from an English course institution still do not understand public speaking techniques. Even though the course institution is a well-known course institution in Indonesia, these graduates are relatively fast reading and speaking English. However, this word's smooth production was not matched with variations in voice, changes in intonation, and minimal meaning. As a lecturer in the English department, this is also our responsibility. Moreover, these graduates are now having their English course institutions independently. They are required to be able to communicate with their students. It is hoped that the current course institutions, especially in the Selong sub-district, can improve the quality of learning by applying correct public speaking techniques. Therefore, it is necessary to hold public speaking training for tutors at English language course institutions. The service plans carried out are: 1.) Delivery of mentoring material, 2.) Implementation of speaking practice in internal forums, 3.) Study tours at other course institutions, 4. ) Practicing speaking as well as evaluating outside the forum. This community service has increased English tutors' understanding in the Foreign Language Center (FLC) of Selong sub-district, East Lombok, seen from how they apply public speaking techniques during their teaching practice English tutors

Abstract

Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) teachers still do not realize the importance of CQ (Creativity Quotient). It is seen from how the teachers tend to be consumptive and rely only on available media, like a material book. The purpose of this dedication is: 1) to bring over the meaning of CQ in MI level of education, 2) to improve the students’ studying quality, and 3) to maximize the function and university task to build the development of MI education. The method used in this dedication were speech, exhibition, and simulation of creative English language learning media made by the students in Hamzanwadi University and downloaded software media. This training was held in 2021, participated by 25 MI headmasters in the East Lombok district. The product of this training program is the MI headmaster spreading the use of learning media in MI. All MI teachers understand the importance of teaching media used as practical and creative learning tools, and the MI teachers become more creative in providing simple, cheap, and environmentally friendly.

Abstract

To ensure that the learning process during the COVID-19 pandemic runs smoothly, all universities in Indonesia have implemented online learning. However, based on the observations made, online learning, especially when carried out synchronously, appears to still be not as optimal as offline learning. This study aims to find out the voices of Indonesian EFL learners on synchronous learning during the covid-19 pandemic. Designed as descriptive qualitative, this study examined 50 students who voluntarily participated as the sampled group. In collecting the data, the researchers used a self-written reflection and questionnaire with four scales that were distributed using Google Form to the participants. The questionnaire was related to respectful attitude, benefits, and obstacles of synchronous learning. All collected data were then analyzed using the sequential explanatory processes. The result of data analysis revealed that Indonesian EFL learners still showed a good respectful attitude during the synchronous learning process, although they agreed that learning synchronously faces a few obstacles, such as unsupported devices and unfavorable learning environments. In addition, they also feel that the teaching and learning process synchronously during the COVID-19 pandemic provided them with several benefits, especially those related to safety, efficiency, and effectiveness. Keywords: EFL learners; synchronous learning; COVID-19 pandemic

They were taking the Writing and Assessment courses as the part of their education to achieve the bachelor degree in Universitas Hamzanwadi, a private university in Lombok, Indonesia. This research took about six months of teaching and learning process.  The observation and document results of the practical EFL teachers become the data primer of this study since the researchers act directly as the lecturer in the writing course. This study uses qualitative research as it investigates a process of teaching learning that lasted several months and happened in a particular setting. The result of study showed that the practical teachers’ writing content and pedagogy knowledge were better than their technological knowledge. Furthermore, the high achiever of practical EFL teachers perform a good TPK and TCK rather than they who come from middle and low achiever.

Abstract

During this pandemic, all countries focused on the issue of transforming the education system, media, teaching strategies, and materials, from face-to-face teaching and learning to teach in a Virtual Environment (TVE)-based, including in Indonesia. However, this sudden change of situation made all education systems change in a hurry. The fact that English teachers are more proficient at applying their content and pedagogical knowledge than technological knowledge makes this study aim to determine how willing teachers are to add and apply their TPACK, particularly in TVE at the moment, and also to reveal the effect of willingness to increase TPACK with a willingness to apply TPACK. The respondents in this survey were 43 EFL teachers. The instrument used in collecting data is a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, normality and homogeneity tests, and independent t-tests were used in the quantitative data analysis. The data shows that most Indonesian EFL teachers are at the median level of readiness to learn and practice TPACK. However, there is no relationship between willingness to understand and willingness to apply TPACK among English teachers. This finding influences the perspective of educators and researchers on how external pressures need to be reduced and teachers in Indonesia to need internal motivation towards technology-based education.

Abstract

The goals of this study were to find out the most dominant types of grammatical cohesion used in undergraduate thesis belonged students of study program of English language education at Hamzanwadi university by M.A.K Halliday’s theory. This study was classified into descriptive qualitative research with discourse approach. The author used documentation in the form of students’ undergraduate thesis for collecting the data. There were two kinds of data taken, namely primary and secondary data. The primary data referred to the thesis written by the learners of the eight semesters as their partial fulfilment task before having bachelor degree. The secondary data was data that complete the main data. The author showed the data in line with Creswell and Poth theory in which the author related the theory by examining the grammatical of the thesis. The research finding revealed the most dominant type of grammatical cohesion was reference which appear 6149 times or 65, 29 % then conjunction which was found 3107 times or 32, 99 %. Meanwhile, the least dominant types of grammatical cohesion were substitution which appeared 145 times (1, 53%) and ellipsis which appeared 16 times (0, 16%).

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the students’ obstacles when writing a thesis proposal. Subjects of this study were 20 learners in the English Language Education Study Program at Hamzanwadi University in the academic year 2020-2021. The data were collected by using a questionnaire with 27 items to obtain students’ opinions about their problems in writing a thesis proposal. A descriptive quantitative design was used in this research. Having revealed the research analysis, it was found that the participants experienced four types of obstacles: 1) describing data analysis (40 %), 2) finding relevant references (60 %), 3) lack of vocabulary (50 %), and 4) writing theoretical and framework (45 %). To solve the learners’ problems in accomplishing the thesis proposal, there are some suggestions. Students should learn more about grammar and practice how to arrange qualified thesis and read various books to get new vocabulary. The advisors should give a detailed and specific explanation to make sure the students understand the explanation.
