Abstract

This paper is a descriptive translation study focusing on the types of figurative expressions used in the short story of ‘Sepotong Tubuh’ and how they are translated into English in the short story of ‘Body’. The study departs from a paradigm that looks upon the translation of the short story as a product and tries to analyze the theme of the short story in both the source and the target language texts since theme is the motivating force of any literary works. Understanding the theme will lead to the understanding of the figurative expressions used in the short story as the use of figurative expressions is motivated by the theme of the short story. Theoretically, the study is an eclectic one based on the theories concerning strategies for translating figurative expression proposed by Larson and the theory of translation proposed by Nida and Taber. This paper is expected in the first place to provide some insights for those who are interested in translation studies especially figurative expressions and in the second place to be beneficial for translation practices.

Abstract

Abstract

This current paper brings into discussion cultural meaningfulness on intercultural perspective of English learning materials for elementary school. Students might be perceived to master English, but there has been no guarantee that they can properly make use of their acquired language skills upon direct interaction with native speakers of the target language. This is reasonable as English instruction in elementary school is projecting grammatical aspects, not touching cultural aspects of the target language yet. In fact, those cultural aspects are playing pivotal roles in achieving interactional comprehension between speakers and interlocutors. In regards to cultural studies, foreign language students are to be apt to target language’s cultures. Departing for the mentioned concerns, English is to be taught by incorporating cultural aspects of native speakers, and thus intercultural perspective. This current paper pinpoints the development of intercultural perspective in English learning materials for elementary school students aging from 6-12 years old. Cultural meaningfulness on intercultural perspective is set to be the target that encapsulates various topics for teaching English in elemenatry school. The so called perspective not merely comprises social skills, but training sensitivity and comprehension on values, point of view, proper way of life and thinking as well. A number of materials containing intercultural perspective and cultural meaningfulness are described in this paper. Those materials are presented within six intercultural topics in the forms of culture-related vocabularies, expressions, and meanings.

Abstract

Translation is not only a linguistic transfer and transfer of meaning but also a cultural transfer. Although theoretically equivalence can be attained due to the universal nature of language and cultural convergence but the facts show that a language is used by speakers who often have very different culture from other speakers of language so that in the translation process it is difficult to find a synonymous equivalent especially culturally bound expression. This study tries to identify and describe the phenomena of translating culturally bound expression from Indonesian into English as a result of the translation ideology and strategy exercised by the translator. This is a descriptive translation study focusing on objective aspect of the product using unidirectional parallel bilingual corpora based on text-based theory and translator-based theory. The findings show that based on the study of Indonesian fiction with Balinese culture setting translated into English there is an effort to translate the cultural meaning with the strategy of borrowing.

Abstract

Temuan yang kedua menunjukkan bahwa literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence dan adaptation merupakan prosedur penerjemahan yang dipergunakan dalam proses penerjemahan ABSTRACTThis article presents an analysis on the translation of Indonesian complex sentences with concessive clauses into English found in the novel 9 Summers 10 Autumns: dari Kota Apelke The Big Apple and in its English translation entitled 9 Summers 10 Autumns: from the City of Apples to The Big Apple. The analysis is conducted in order to investigate on whether the complex sentences with concessive clauses in the Source Language (SL) are translated into similar form of concessive in the Target Language (TL) or instead into a different form.Secondly, the analysis is also conducted in order to identify what the translation procedures utilized by the translator in translating this sentence construction. Theories by Sneddon (1996) combined with the one by Thomson and Martinet (1986) and as well Larson2(1998)are applied in responding to the first question. The theory by Vinay and Darbelnet (in Venuti, 2000) is used in coping with the second problem.Findings of the research show that the Indonesian complex sentences with concessive clauses collected are translated into English through the same form, the form of concessive clauses. In terms of procedure, the finding of the research, shows that Literal translation, Transposition, Modulation, Equivalence and Adaptation are applied.

Abstract

ABSTRAKStudi ini difokuskan pada deskripsi dan analisis terjemahan beberapa istilah keagamaan Hindu Bali ke dalam Bahasa Inggris. Pembahasan dikhususkan pada penerapan teknik dan ideologi penerjemahan. Lebih lanjut, studi ini juga mengkaji dampak pemilihan teknik dan ideologi penerjemahan terkait terhadap kualitas hasil terjemahan.Data dalam studi ini diambil dari buku berjudul The Invisible Mirror Siwaratri Kalpa: Balinese Literature in Performance? Dan lebih jauh lagi dapat dikatakan penerapan ideologi penerjemahan yang dilakukan berdampak positif bagi kualitas terjemahan yang dihasilkan.ABSTRACTThis study is focused on description and analysis of translation of Balinese Hindu religious terms into English. The discussion is specified on the details of techniques applied and the ideology of translation involved. Further, this study also assesses the impact of translation techniques and ideology applied on the quality of translation product. The data was taken from a book entitled “The Invisible Mirror Siwaratri Kalpa: Balinese Literature in Performance?Sastra Bali di dalam Seni Pertunjukan” written by Ron Jenkins and I Nyoman Catra. Specifically for this study, the data was taken from the script of Balinese shadow puppet. This study applied documentation method and note-taking technique in collecting the data. Further, this study made use of Interactive Model proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994: 10-12; also in Miles, Huberman and Saldana, 2014) in analyzing the collected data. The theories applied in addressing the problems are based on the categories of cultural terms by Newmark (1988), techniques of translation by Molina and Albir (2002), and ideology of translation by Venuti (1995).Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the domestication ideology is pre-dominantly adopted. This indicates that in the process of translating the ST, the translation is oriented towards the TT readers. The translation of the terms from Balinese to English entails severe complications since it involves a condition where the languages and the cultures are disparate. The techniques of translation applied that directed dominantly towards TT readers shows that there is a great cultural difference between the SL text and TL text. The techniques and ideology adopted contribute rather positively to the quality of translation.
