Abstract

Nicolai Sinai has criticized the method of Qur’anic structural analysis offered by Michel Cuypers due to his arbitrary mode of cutting verses and neglecting rhyme of the Qur’an. This paper, then, attempts to apply the method, which is called as Semitic Rhetorical Analysis (SRA), into surah al-Qiyamah by concerning the waqf of the verses. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the structure of surah al-Qiyamah is coherent and consistent to the pattern of text composition in Semitic Rhetoric analysis. This paper argues that there are parallel, concentric, or mirror symmetrical composition patterns at various levels of text based on Semitic Rhetoric principles. The structure of the surah, then, shows its coherence and thus, opposes to the notion of the existing of some irrelevant verses in this surah.

Abstract

Iltifȃt Stylistic Feature in ‘Itȃb Verses and Their Influence on Qur’anic InterpretationThe grammatical shift in theQur’anic style, well-known by iltifat, indicates particular meanings so that the existence of this stylistic feature in verses can influence its interpretation. This paper, then, attempts to explore the influence further it makes by examining verses that contain reprimands (‘itab) in the Qur’an, verses of reprimand that use iltifat or not.The purpose of this study is to determine the extent of iltifat’s influence in the interpretation of the reprimand verses, namely in surah ‘Abasa (80) verses 1-11, compared with other reprimand verses that do not use the iltifat style. This study, then, applies a linguistic interpretation (al-tafsir al-lughawi) approach that analyzes verses based on the meaning of words, word order, and rhetorical aspects. This paper argues that the existence of the iltifat style in the reprimand verses refers to courtesy and exaltation. A sense of gentleness in fostering and educating is found as the influence of iltifat style on these verses

Abstract

In his study of Qur’anic structure, Michel Cuypers applied Semitic Rhetoric that has been used to analyze Biblical structure. Despite having received positive responses from Gabriel Said Reynolds and others, Cuypers’ method was criticized by Nicolai Sinai for ignoring rhyme in the Qur’an and overdoing in maintaining the existence of the ring structure in the Qur’an. This paper, then, attempts to examine this analytic method from the perspective of the Qur’anic sciences’ (‘ulu>m al-Qur’a>n). This study aims to determine proportionally the characteristics of the method and the effect it produces by using descriptive-analytic and comparative research methods. This paper argues that there are subjectivity and inconsistency in dividing the text and determining the structure of its composition, as in the study of surah al-Qa>ri‘ah by Cuypers, and an ignorance of the information about reasons for the revelations (asba>b al-nuzu>l) and Prophet’s explanation about verses. However, the application of this method can lead to a new interpretation of the Qur’an, namely by using the information in the Qur’an itself, indicators of wording around it (siya>q), and verse correlation (muna>saba>t). On the other hand, this method supports the authenticity and coherence of the Qur’anic text, which has become a debate among the Orientalists.

Abstract

يعدّ الالتفات من أهم ألوان الصياغة العربية وأكثرها تداولا في القرآن الكريم، ويلقب بشجاعة العربية وهو يحسن الكلام حتى يجذب انتباه القارئ والسامع، وله من الأسرار واللطائف الحسنة تجعل أهل العلم من البلاغيين والمفسرين وغيرهم لم يتوقفوا على الحديث عنه والوقوف على نماذجه. ومن بين تلك الأسرار ما تكون في أساليب الالتفات في الجزء الأخير من القرآن الكريم، فيقدم هذا البحث عرضا موجزا لتعريف الالتفات لغة واصطلاحا مع تنوع أشكال الالتفات قبل ذكر الآيات القرآنية في هذا الجزء التي تظهر فن الالتفات فيها مع سرد أقوال المفسرين عنها، ثم الإشارة إلى المواطن المتبقية للالتفات في هذا الجزء بدون الوصول إلى مرتبة الإحصاء الدقيق في حصرها.

Abstract

Sejak lama kajian teks terus dilakukan, seolah ia tidak pernah lekang oleh waktu, terutama terhadap validitas teks Al-Qur’an. Di era permulaan Islam, para sarjana sudah menggunakan metode kritik teks dalam mengkaji manuskrip al-Qur’an, namun penerapannya sering kali menuai  kritik karena berasal dari studi teks Bibel. Padahal prinsip-prinsip kritik teks ini telah dipakai oleh para sahabat Nabi meski istilah textual criticism (kritik teks) belum muncul. Artikel ini berusaha melacak sejauh mana penerapan kritik teks A’zami yang meneliti 18 manuskrip al-Qur’an tertuang dalam karyanya Ageless Qur’an timeless text: A visual study of Sura 17 across 14 centuries and 19 manuscripts. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif dengan cara menganalisis karya A’zami tersebut. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa A’zami menerapkan beberapa prinsip kritik teks, seperti pencarian kesalahan teks, analisa perbandingan manuskrip, dan perbedaan tulisan al-Qur’an dari masa ke masa. Namun, A‘zami tidak mengajukan perbaikan teks atau menerbitkan edisi kritis al-Qur’an sebagaimana efek penerapan kritik teks pada Bibel. Keunikan kajian A’zami terletak pada visualisasi proses kritik teks. Artikel ini juga menyimpulkan bahwa penelitian mengenai manuskrip-manuskrip al-Qur’an menggunakan prinsip-prinsip kritik teks dapat membuktikan keaslian al-Qur’an.

Abstract

The usage of biblical criticism as methods to approach the Qur’an have raised doubts about its authenticity. It begins with the assumption that several faults in Bible also found in the Koran. The qur’anic text is also worthy of criticism since it assumed as only written document, which is not also have being memorized for centuries in mind. This paper tries to analyze some of biblical criticisms and their employment in the qur’anic studies in order to find out more than the assumptions and the results of studies, with focusing on textual criticism that applied by Arthur Jeffery in his various works. In order to achieve its goals, this library research employ descriptive-analysis methods to outline critically the usage of those biblical criticisms. The result of this study indicates that various qur’anic studies using Biblical criticism have a number of methodological weaknesses, such as the use of invalid reference sources, distortion of facts by changing the reference text, and faults of understanding the sources.

Abstract

This article examines Michel Cuyper’s interpretation of the Qur’an which is the result of the application of Semitic Rhetorical Analysis (SRA) in QS. Al-Mā’idah. Although SRA’s implementation has demonstrated the coherence of the Qur’anic text; however, no one has properly articulated the cohesiveness of the Qur’anic text as the basis of that coherence. Thus, to ascertain the text’s cohesiveness in terms of positions and forms from the SRA’s perspective, this study applied cohesion text theories to Cuypers’ implementation of SRA in QS. Al-Mā’idah. A thesis of the paper is that, according to SRA, the cohesiveness of a qur’anic text in QS Al-Mā’idah can be shown through the pairings of words or sentences inside particular groupings of text particles following the principles of Semitic Rhetoric. The Semitic Rhetoric’s principle of parallel, concentric, or mirror symmetry in those text particle groups determined which words or phrases are paired in a text particle group. As a result, from an SRA perspective, the Qur’anic text’s cohesiveness may be discovered at each level of the text particle group, demonstrating multi-layered cohesiveness. In Cuypers’ reading of QS Al-Mā’idah, synonyms and repetition are used to maintain lexical cohesion, while ellipsis, substitution, and reference established grammatical cohesion.

Abstract

Peletakan tanda waqf dalam mushaf seharusnya sesuai dengan kaidah-kaidah tertentu karena waqf dalam Al-Qur’an berpengaruh besar terhadap penyampaian maknanya. Artikel ini membahaspenggunaan tanda waqf pada mushaf Indonesia dan hubungannya dengan penerjemahan Al-Qur’an ke Bahasa Indonesia. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan pengaruh tanda waqf terhadap penerjemahan Al-Qur’an ke Bahasa Indonesia. Peneliti menggunakan metode induksi untuk mengumpulkan ayat-ayat Al-Qur’an yang terdapat pengaruh tanda waqf terhadappenerjemahannya dan menjelaskannya dengan metode deskriptif. Kemudian menganalisisnya dengan metode content analysis berdasarkan penafsiran ayat-ayat tersebut pada kitab-kitab tafsir.Mushaf Al-Qur’an yang menjadi objek penelitian adalah mushaf standar Indonesia yang telah ditashih oleh Tim Kementerian Agama (Kemenag) Republik Indonesia. Sedangkan teks terjemahanyang dikaji adalah terjemahan Al-Qur’an yang diterbitkan oleh Kemenag pada tahun 2019. Sebagai pembanding, peneliti juga menggunakan mushaf Madinah yang diterbitkan oleh Pencetakan Majma’ Malik Fahd, Madinah, Arab Saudi. Penelitian ini menghasilkan temuan bahwasanya tanda waqf membantu pembaca dalam memahami teks Al-Qur’an dan sekaligus membantu prosespenerjemahan. Selain itu, terdapat kesesuaian antara tanda waqf di mushaf Indonesia dengan teks terjemahannya.

Abstract

The Quran contains verses and letters that are systematically and coherently structured, as supported by al-Zarkashi and al-Suyuti. But Richard Bell took a different view. For example, according to him, the letter Al-Hijr needed to be more systematic, and there were some errors in laying verses. Meanwhile, Michel Cuypers is serious about the Semitic Rhetorical Analysis (SRA) approach in analyzing the structure of the Qur'anic text to find a concentric, mirror, and parallel symmetrical patterns in the form of the Qur'anic text. Even this approach is Considered a modern methodology with a new type of dialogue. It is interesting to look for bright spots in the structure of surat al-Hijr from the perspective of SRA. So that raises the question of what is the form of the text of surat al-Hijr from the standpoint of SRA. A Semitic Rhetorical Analysis (SRA) approach is used to answer this question. That is by analyzing the pairing pattern of the text of surat al-Hijr so that it forms groups of text at the bottom level. The bottom level has reanalyzed the design to get groups of text at the level above it, and so on, until the top level is obtained, namely surat al-Hijr. This article concludes that SRA, according to surat al-Hijr, is a Book consisting of 13 Sections arranged in a concentric symmetrical pattern (A-B-C-B*-A*). Richard Bell's opinion is refuted because each verse in surah al-Hijr is capable of symmetry with other poems from the lowest level of the text to the top level, so this conclusion indicates that surat al-Hijr is systematically and Coherently arranged.
