Abstract

This study is qualitative study and focus on the sociolinguistics which studying language andsociety of a certain community. The emphasis of this study is discourse community. The discoursecommunity must have all these qualities or it is not a discourse community. Swales definition sets aprofessional tone to the term discourse community, a central community in Oliver Twist , that isPickpocket community. Thus, this study aiming to analyze further about the pickpocket discoursecommunity seen in Oliver Twist movie based on the six characteristics of discourse community definedby Swales.

Abstract

This research is classroom action research. It is carried out at 3rd semester students PGSD study program in Panca Marga University Probolinggo, consisting of 32 students. The objective of the research is to find out how can pictures and guided questions be implemented to improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text. This research is conducted in 2 (two) cycles. The procedure of the research consist of: preliminary study, planning, action, observation, and reflection. Qualitative data are obtained from observation checklist, field notes and interview. While quantitative data are gained from the product of students’ descriptive text writing. The result of the research shows that using picture and guided questions can improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text. As the indicator of success, the researcher adapted scoring rubric consisting 4 level: Level 1 = Very Poor, Level 2 = Fair to Poor, Level 3 = Good to Average, and Level 4 = Excellent to Very Good. It is considered success if 63 % or more than 63% students have reached level 3. In preliminary study only 28% students belongs to level 3. In cycle 1 there a slight significant showing percentage improvement in level 3 (47% students reached level 3). In second cycle, the result of students’ writing finally shows a high improvement, 69% students have reached level 3. It indicates that using picture and guided questions can improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text. Keywords: picture, guided questions, writing, descriptive text

Abstract

This community service was a training in writing descriptive text for junior high school students in Joboan village, Probolinggo city. The method of this community service covered four stages: a) analyzing, b) planning and developing the content, c) implementing and d) training. In analyzing stage, the writer found problems faced by the students in writing descriptive text. In planning and developing the content stage, the writer developed method to write descriptive text by utilizing picture and guided question. With this pandemic situation, in implementing stage, the writer gathered 10 participants by applying health protocol suggested by the Government. Training stage was done for three days, 20-22 of July 2020. In the first day, the writer gave explanation related descriptive text. In the second day, the participants started to practice writing descriptive text by using picture and guided question. Feedback was given in the third day. The results of this training were shown by the presence of all participants three days in a row, they also gave responds and asked questions enthusiastically in the training process. The participants no longer faced difficulty in writing descriptive text since they knew that picture and guided question can help them write descriptive text better. Abstract

KKN Thematic Covid-19 using theme Empowering the Community in the Period of Covid-19 Pandemic is a service done by university students that is expected to empower the community by utilizing their knowledge, especially in the period of Covid-19 pandemic. One of the programs of KKN Thematic Covid-19 is giving socialization in the making of instant ginger drink. Instant ginger drink is a processed product of ginger crystallization by boiling it with water, sugar, salt, cinnamon, lemongrass and clove. Realizing the high amount of potential health and nutrition of ginger, KKN Panca Marga University Probolinggo team in Paiton district make initiation to give socialization in the making of instant ginger drink. The program is done in four (4) days, the first day is the introduction of ingredients and tools, the second and the third day is the making of instant ginger drink and pack it into pouch, the four day is giving the pack of instant ginger drink to the community around. After the socialization, KKN Panca Marga University Probolinggo team in Paiton district expect the community to have a higher immunity health rate and is able to use instant ginger drink as a business opportunity for housewives, therefore it can indirectly improve the prosperity of community in Sukodadi Village Paiton District in the period of pandemic Covid-19.
