Abstract

Abstract

Chronic discomfort potentially occurred during a hemodynamic measurements in a rat-tail blood pressure chamber due to the animal is restrained in restricted space for a long period – it took 10 repetitions each at approximately 1.5 minutes for a session of hemodynamic measure. Procedures related to the animal welfare methods are required to improve the accuracy of the measurement which would altered from the discomfort to comfort state of the animal. Welfare procedures are represented by humane handling and habituation of the subject (rats) to the operator and the hemodynamic apparatus. Seven rats were subjected in this study and measured for hemodynamic value in three times point: before (T0), after humane handling (T1) and after human handling and habituation to the measurement apparatus (T2), respectively. Six out of seven subjects showed a significant lowering deviation for all variables of hemodynamic measurements, and that deviation followed by a declining trend from T0 to T2, i.e T0>T1>T2. The results indicated that welfare-based approach would benefit the animals from feeling discomfort and yet improving the accuracy and quality of the outcomes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in cellular pathology of adrenal gland as impact of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSC) therapy in hypertensive rats. The research used ten male wistar rats with age ± 10-12 weeks with body weight ± 200-250 grams which is devided into two different groups ie BMMSc(-) hyprtention and BMMSc(+) hypertension. Rats are conditioned with hypertention using Hasbinoto et al method. Right nephrectomy and left carotid communic artery ligation are performed on all rats. Rats are injected with deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA), then 0.12 % of âaminopropionitrile fumarate (BAPN) is added into drinking water. 1% NaCl solution was administered as drinking water during the study. Rats were evaluated for particular indicator ie blood pressure then were euthanized for adrenal organs collections. The data that obtained then analysed using qualitative descriptive. The result of the study indicate hypertention therapy using BMMSC can repair cell damaged of the adrenal gland such as hyperplasia, nodules, cysts and cytoplasm vacuolization.

Abstract

Abstract

The lack of clarity about the opportunities for significant neurologic improvement, coupled with the risk of severe postoperative complications, decompression surgery for patients with giant tumors in the cervical spine accompanied by long-lasting advanced neurological deficits places a heavy moral burden on surgeons. Here we report a three-year follow-up after surgery for an immense spinal neurofibroma in which the patient was bedridden for the past fifteen years. Our findings suggest surgery remains beneficial for patients without major postoperative complications.

Abstract

Background: Cervical spine disease has the potential to reduce productivity in affected patients because of myelopathy and mood disorder (e.g. depression) which lead to decreasing of the patient’s quality of life. Objective: This study aims to elaborate on the most frequent symptoms and pathology of C-spine disease in patients who underwent a surgical procedure over the period time from January 2012 to December 2016.Method: This study is a retrospective. All patients who underwent surgery for the C-spine disease are included. The data was obtained from the records in our spine database.Result: The total number of surgical procedures for spine disease over the 5 years was 345 procedures, with 127 procedures in the C-spine which are the second most common procedures of spine surgery in Department of Neurosurgery FMUI. The C-spine diseases were more common in males, aged more than 50 years old. The most frequent disease or pathology is a degenerative disease, and yet, tumour cases show an increasing number and became the most common pathology in the year of 2016. The most common procedure is anterior cervicaldiscectomy and fusion (ACDF).Conclusion: Our study showed that the most common symptoms and pathology are myelopathies and degenerative disease respectively, which has similarity with another study in the term of the mostfrequent pathology and surgical procedure. The finding of the more advanced neurological condition by the time of surgery as the most common symptom is found to be contradictory with other studies in western countries.
