Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the effect of metacognitive instruction on students' self-regulated learning (SRL) writing for Indonesian EFL students to have appropriate grammar and meaningful learning experiences. The methodology used was a quasi-experimental design. The research participants were 50 students from the University of Muhammadiyah East Kalimantan (UMKT) English department who took a writing course. The participants were divided into the experimental group that was taught with metacognitive instruction. In contrast, although the same teacher taught the control group and had similar learning materials, the teacher did not use metacognitive instruction. The data was taken through pre-test and post-test and analyzed through independent t-test with statistics tool SPSS. The results showed that the experimental group has a higher SRL score with significant results in overall score even though there is one component that is different from previous studies, namely knowledge of cognition. Some suggestions were proposed.

Abstract

Although the study of effective strategies for teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) in Indonesia has become prominent research topics for decades, little attention is paid to the students’ experiences of learning English. This study aims at researching some of our students’ experiences of learning English both at their junior and senior high schools. The students reflecting the experience were participants of our course unit of General English, Introduction to linguistics, Structure 2, History of English language, and were both from non-English and English departments at the University of Bengkulu and Dehasen University, Bengkulu, Indonesia. Of the eight effective and fourteen ineffective ways to learn English, we found three main issues apparent in our study namely self-confidence and motivation, learning environment, and methods and media in teaching English as a foreign language. Further explication of each issue is discussed.

Abstract

Research on Oral Corrective Feedback, especially related to its factors, has become a topic that is still widely discussed in teaching English because various application contexts will produce different conclusions. That is why it is important to study this topic further where this research aims to test a group by applying a single pretest-posttest method by providing oral Corrective Feedback. The participants in this study were a lecturer and 27 students in a Speaking English for Academic Purposes (ESP) class at the State Islamic University in Malang, East Java. The results showed an increase in the mean score from the pretest to the posttest. This means that giving Corrective Feedback provides benefits during the learning process for students in improving. Several factors in Corrective Feedback can explain how students respond to the Corrective Feedback given so that Corrective Feedback can play a significant role in improving the competence of speaking English. It is hoped that by understanding the use of Corrective Feedback, teachers, lecturers and educational practitioners will better understand which types of Corrective Feedback can have a positive impact on improving English speaking competence for English learners as a foreign language.
