Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a condition where the blood glucose is higher than normal condition. This condition will damage tissues in human body, and is usually caused by free radicals or by the decrease of the antioxidant defence activity. Tannic acid (tannin) is a member of antioxidant and antidiabetic agents. Antidiabetic plants used by the people are commonly unknown about their amount of tannic acid content. This study was aimed to investigate antidiabetic plants by analyzing its tannic acid content quantitatively. These compounds were compared with commercial antidiabetic drug. The determination of total tannic acid content in the plants was conducted using Folin Ciocalteu method. The results showed that the tannic acid consisted of antidiabetic drug, jackfruit bark, gambier sap, raru bark, jengkol bark, capo leaf, and sipait leaf with concentration of 21.01, 29.98, 40.95, 51.01, 51.84, 59.70 and 60.16 mg/g, respectively. The tannic acid content in the six antidiabetic plants were higher than those of commercial antidiabetic drug, therefore all of the tested plants is potential as antidiabetic drug.

Abstract

Obat Pahit from Lingga Malay ethnic is a traditional medicine which has believed by the local people to maintain the body stamina (immunomodulators and antioxidants). This study aimed to investigate the effect of Obat Pahit Potion on kidney histological structure of white male rats (Rattus norvegicus). This research was an experimental study with a Randomized Complete Block Design consisted of 15 treatments and 3 replications. The experiment groups consisted of control groups (Stimuno, distilled water, and CMC-Na 1%) and three treatment groups of Obat Pahit Potion (Kalan, SP4, Linau) with 4 different dosages. The samples of a kidney of white rats were prepared for histological observation using paraffin method and Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. The results of this study showed that three kinds of Obat Pahit with four different dosages showed the expansion of glomerular cells on kidney tissue. Damage that occurs in the kidneys is still in small amounts and normal range which is less than 25%. The results of this study provide information for the society that the consumption of Obat Pahit Potion will not cause toxicity effect on the kidney.

Abstract

Abstract Mangifera foetida is a species of cosmopolitan mango with strong vigor. Some M. foetida are found in some front houses and gardens and has a character of semi-wild in its cultivation. Decreases in land area, such as deforestation, can lead to a rapid decline in their diversity of cultivars. This study aimed to analyze and reconstructs the phylogenetic relationship among M. foetida cultivars using the rbcL gene sequences. Samples were collected from the exploration within the area of South Sumatra, such as Provinces of Bengkulu, Lampung and South Sumatra. The DNA extraction was carried out using the modified CTAB method, followed by DNA amplification using rbcL-specific primers, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. The phylogenetic trees were reconstructed using the PAUP* version 4.0b10 by using the method of Maximum Parsimony (MP) and Neighbor Joining (NJ). Cladogram of the MP tree showed two clades that the clad I consisted of M. foetida (Macang lonjong) and M. foetida (Macang lado) cultivars, whereas clad II consisted of M. foetida (Macang bulat) cultivar. The NJ tree showed that M. foetida (Macang bulat) has a longer genetic distance so it is considered as a more primitive cultivar than others. Therefore, information and evidences from the taxonomic status of the M. foetida cultivars were obtained from this study.

Abstract

Mango (Mangifera L.) is a horticulture crop that grows in tropical regionthat has high diversity in Bengkulu Province. However, its diversity in this province has not been revealed, whereas on the other hand mango diversity is currently endangered due to the conversion of forests from natural habitat to plantation and industry. This study was aimed to determine the mango diversity in Bengkulu using morphological characters. All of the speciemens were collected from the field using exploration method that conducted from September 2016 to March 2017. A total of 17 individuals of mango were examined, and classified into seven mango species. The examination was conducted on the morphological characters, these characters were then scored and analyzed using NTSYSpc 2.02. The coefficient of similarity of 17 mango trees ranges from 0.45 to 0.80. Dendrogram showed that the clustering of mango was not based on the origin of the population but based on the morphological characters. The first group comprises six individuals and the second group consists of 11 individuals

Abstract

The hydroponic technology of the wick system is one of the innovations in vegetable cultivation without soil with the innovation of utilizing used goods and household waste such as styrofoam and used cans as a container for planting. The purpose of this activity is to reduce waste in the community, improve the family's economic capacity, and people's interest in consuming clean and hygienic vegetables in Kualu Village, Tambang District, Kampar Regency. This hydroponic technique is made of relatively inexpensive and affordable materials so that the limitations of people's financial capabilities can be overcome. This system is a hydroponic system that uses axes to absorb organic nutrients. To minimize the cost of purchasing nutrients, it can be overcome by innovating nutrient solutions from household waste into liquid fertilizer. The implementation of community service uses counselling, discussion and making hydroponic technology. The community is very enthusiastic in joining this program, especially housewives who want to know the application of Wick's hydroponic technology so that they can play a large role in meeting food needs and increasing people's income.
