Abstract

This paper attempts to answer how Islamic Women define the concept of beauty in Ponds advertisement white beauty facial foam and body lotion on television. This study uses a socio-semiotic approach described through three aspects of social context, namely field, tenor, and mode. It argues that Ponds’ definition of a beauty only refers to physical standards, that is, women who have white skin and use both Ponds White Beauty Facial Foam and Foam Body Lotion. Further, television through Ponds advertising is considered as a commercial institution that supports the main idea of capitalism. However, Islamic women consider beautiful physically and spiritually. It suggests that the beautiful women are those who obey and surrender to Allah SWT. In short, Islamic women do not agree with the meaning of beauty resulted from Ponds White Beauty Facial Foam and Ponds Body Lotion advertisement. Rather, beauty consists of both body and, more importantly, soul.

Abstract

Abstracs:This paper aims to explain the importance of pragmatic areas to be studied in the development of teaching materials, the teaching of linguistics. To that end, I began this paper with a discussion of the linguistics understanding, pragmatics understanding, briefly explain topics development, and, by looking at the difference in studies with another fields in linguistics, showing the importance of pragmatics. The experts define the term pragmatics differently. Pragmatics grows from four trends or tradition, namely: (1) the tendency of insyntaxsism, (2) socio-critical tendencies, (3) the philosophical tradition, and (4) ethnometodology tradition. Topics include discussion of the pragmatics; they are speech acts theory, cooperative principles, implicature, relevance theory, and the theory of politeness. In conclusion, I see the importance of pragmatics in linguistics at least two things: first, pragmatics is the only level in linguistics which studies language by taking into account also users and secondly, relates to the inability of syntax and semantics to explain the phenomenon of the use of everyday language, I concluded that semantics and pragmatics look at the position as two complement each other. Furthermore, with regard to the teaching of language, pragmatics plays a role in the development of communicative competence. Key words: Teaching Materials Development, Pragmatics, Linguistics

Abstract

This research is aimed at describing causative construction in Indonesian and English, by choosing the same verb, and followed by comparing them. Causative construction in Indonesian and English found in three level, they are: first, lexical causative construction, the Indonesian as well as English will create cause-effect construction, which is formed in a lexical unit (Y). The relation of formality is seen in semantic relation, for the reason, a form of lexical causative construction can be seen from the meaning and it’s single verb. Second, in the Indonesian morphology causative construction, “effect” typically is signed by a verb (Y), for instance, the word mati “dead” in mematikan “to cause a dead”, (causation). It is indicated by an affix (Z) in-’kan’. The formality separation is related to a raising of separation between cause-effect concept, while English has not put address on a construction of morphology causative. Third, in the construction of periphrastis causative construction (analytical) ‘cause’ and ‘effect’ is expressed by a separated verb, and also it has a large formality division, between ‘cause’ ‘sebab’ and ‘result’ ‘hasil’. Both of Indonesian and English have put address on this construction. In all three construction analysis above, it is clearly seen that there is a correlation between causative type and causation in the iconicity pyramid, which stated by Haiman.
