Abstract

Abstract: The improvement of the effectiveness in teaching reading is necessary as a way to improve the students’ mastery of reading comprehension. Selecting the appropriate method is one way to improve the effectiveness of teaching reading. Cooperative integrated reading and composition (CIRC) is a method for teaching reading and writing by applying teammates and serving various reading activities. Dealing with it, this paper will show some important points: (1) notion of reading, (2) basic concept of CIRC, (3) purposes and benefits of teaching reading using CIRC, (4) model of teaching using CIRC, (5) the importance of CIRC in teaching reading.   Keywords     : cooperative integrated reading and composition (CIRC) and the effectiveness of teaching reading.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe  research  aims:  (1)  to  find  out  whether  PQRST  technique  can improve the students‟ reading comprehension at ninth grade student of SMP 27 Surakarta in the academic year of 2017/2018, and (2) to know how far the improvement students‟ of reading comprehension using PQRST at ninth grade of SMP  27 Surakarta in  the academic  year of  2017/2018.  The researcher conducted  a  classroom  action  research  at  the  ninth  grade  of  SMP  N  27 Surakarta from September up to October 2017. This research was conducted in class  IX  F  which  consisted  of  27  students.  The  research  concerned  in improving students‟ reading comprehension on narrative texts using Preview Question Read Summarize and Test (PQRST) Technique. The research consisted  of  two  cycles.  The  procedure  of  action  research  consisted  of planning, implementation of the action, observation, and reflection. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, interview and document. In analyzing the data, the researcher used quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The result of this research showed that Preview Question Read Summarize  and  Test  (PQRST)  Technique  can  improve  students‟ reading comprehension on narrative texts at ninth grade of SMP N 27 Surakarta in the academic year of 2017/2018. The improvement can be seen from the result of the test. It was 65.8 in pre-test, then it became 72.6 in post-test 1 and it became higher in post-test 2 (82.8). Abstract

Business presentation is needed by persons to inform or persuade audience about certain topics. Through the presentation, information are clearly received by audience. So it needs many aspects to do, such as chronological order of presentation; clear language; good attitude and behavior; and polite ethics. Ethics is the standards one uses to determine right from wrong in terms of thought and behavior. It is one of major components of successful presentation. To do that, ones could adopt ethics from their own culture or culture where they are right now, i.e. in abroad. This paper here intends to show ethic of English business presentation and ethic of presentation to public in order to persuade audience to use the product/ program. It means that it is not to use on presentation of national or international seminar because the rule is not so detailed and complicated The business presentation based on the result of research and good communication is necessary to present objective information, therefore public will get clear and objective understanding. In fact, showing strengths on the own products and showing the weaknesses of others are prohibited to save the existence of brands.Keywords: ethics, business presentation

Abstract

Tasks Based Language Teaching (TBLT) berkembang sejak decade 1980 sampai 2010.Hal tersebut dapat dilihat dari beberapa buku yang ditulis oleh beberapa ahli pengajaran.Tujuan dari TBLT tidak lain adalah untuk berlatih menggunakan bahasa target (bahasa Inggris)dalam bentuk kegiatan menyimak, berbicara, membaca, dan menulis didalam kelas dengan caramengadopsi kegiatan nyata menggunakan bahasa target. Ada banyak buku tentang TBLT tetapihanya sedikit buku yang membahas tentang TBLT didalam pembelajaran membaca (reading).Salah satu buku tersebut adalah A Framework of Task Based Learning. Kaitannya dengan TBLTdengan pengajaran membaca, buku tersebut membahas tentang prosedur pemilihan teks,mengenal dan mengeksplorasi strategi-strategi dalam membaca, dan desain TBLT dalampembelajaran membaca.Didalam artikel ini, penulis mencoba memaparkan tentang TBLT didalam pengajaranmembaca, antara lain konsep (1) real world texts to real world task; (2) a text to real worldtasks; (3) real world texts to tasks, dan (4) tasks to texts. Pertama, konsep real world texts to realworld task adalah pengajaran membaca yang menggunakan teks otentik berbahasa targetkemudian mengadopsi latihan berdasarkan kondisi nyata dilapangan, semisal membacabeberapa brosur hotel kemudian menentukan hotel mana yang akan dipilih. Kedua, a text to realworld tasks adalah pengajaran membaca dengan membaca teks kemudian mengerjakan latihanyang bersumber dari kondisi di lapangan, semisal membaca teks diskusi, kemudian para siswabermain peran sebagai orang untuk berdialog tentang isi teks tersebut. Ketiga, real world texts totasks adalah pengajaran membaca menggunakan teks otentik kemudian mengerjakan latihantentang komponen bahasa, semisal membaca teks review tentang film dan menyaksikan filmtersebut, kemudian membedakan isi film tersebut dari teks dan dari film yang telah dilihat.Keempat, tasks to texts adalah pengajaran membaca dengan mengerjakan latihan, kemudianmembaca teks, misalnya para siswa menulis kata benda, kerja, sifat, and keterangan di papantulis. Kemudian membuat kalimat dari kata-kata tersebut. Selanjutnya, mereka menentukankalimat-kalimat yang termasuk pendapat, fakta, dan kegiatan sehari-hari. Setelah itu merekamembaca teks deskripsi dan menentukan kalimat-kalimat yang termasuk pendapat, fakta, dankegiatan sehari-hari.

Abstract

The article aims at presenting the description of using You Tube environmental based inteaching English to improve students’ writing skill. The subject of the research is the 4thsemester students of the English Department Program of Slamet Riyadi University in theacademic year of 2014/2015. The method of the research is a classroom action research. Theresearch was conducted in two cycles. In the 1st cycle, it consists of four meetings in which itincludes pre-test, twice of treatment, and post-test one. Meanwhile, 2nd cycle comprises threemeetings; those are twice of treatment and a post-test two. The sources of the data cover primaryand secondary data. The primary data is informants; those are the students and the writinglecturer. Then, the secondary data is the document, i.e. lesson plan, questionnaire, and soon. Thetechniques of collecting the data are tests, observation, questionnaire, documentation, anddocument. Meanwhile, to analyze the data, the researcher use quantitative and qualitative dataanalysis. The quantitative data analysis is obtained with the comparison of mean score betweenpre-test and post-test one and post-test one and post-test two. Subsequently, the qualitative dataanalysis uses data description, data display, data reduction, and drawing conclusion. The resultof the research shows that there is improvement of the students’ achievement after cycle one andcycle two. The mean score of pre-test is 60.63, meanwhile post-test one is 70.37. It means thatthere is improvement after cycle one. Subsequently, the mean score of post-test two is 71.05. Itcan be concluded that there is also improvement of after cycle two, although it is not significant.Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the achievement of the studentsimproved after cycle one and cycle two in which it is higher than the criterion of minimumachievement, namely 70. It is because they have clear understanding about what they wouldwrite and they have adequate basic writing.Keywords: Writing Skill, You Tube Video, Teaching English

Abstract

The implementation of autonomous learning needs various activities and media in order to attain learning outcomes. The article presents the research findings about the students’ perception toward autonomous learning through computer mediated communication (CMC). The research was carried out in the intensive reading lesson that consists of 14 meetings and 100 minutes each. The type of research is a descriptive qualitative. The participant in the research is 2nd semester students of bachelor degree of English language education at Slamet Riyadi University, Indonesia, who are 36 students. The research was done both offline and online learnings before and during corona pandemic situation in 2020. The methods of collecting the data are questionnaire after learning finished and observation in following the lesson. The researchers analyzed the data used data display, data reduction, and conclusion. The research findings show that there are various activities facilitating the students’ reading comprehension. They are online listening, text-based and video based CMC, collaborative activity, online chat log, and text based communication; the students have a responsibility to follow both offline and online learning activities by doing individual and collaborative activities, and the students use creative language and language strategy to communicate the texts’ content being learnt. Abstract

Pandemi Covid-19 telak melumpuhkan banyak sisi kehidupan manusia. Dalam situasi ini umat Islam Indonesia turut diuji antara lain dalam aspek solidaritas dan kemajemukannya. Sebagai konsekuensinya terdapat dua pilihan bagi umat Islam Indonesia untuk menghadapi problem global ini, antara bersatu padu atau bercerai berai. Kemajemukan dan solidaritas sangat dibutuhkan bangsa Indonesia mengingat banyaknya elemen dalam tubuh umat Islam di Indonesia seperti beragamnya ormas. Di antara yang paling besar seperti Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI), Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) dan Muhammadiyah. Peran pemerintah dan ulama sangat dibutuhkan dalam mengatasi Covid-19. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana perkembangan solidaritas dan kemajemukan Islam di tengah pandemi Covid-19 serta memetakan sejauh mana dampak solidaritas dan kemajemukan yang telah dihadirkan oleh umat Islam Indonesia. Metode penelitian yang digunakan ialah metode penelitian kualitatif, berbasis pengamatan sosial. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa wacana solidaritas Islam Indonesia semakin meningkat di masa pandemi yang dibuktikan dengan hadirnya bantuan sosial dan kegiatan kemanusiaan lainnya secara sukarelawan yang dilakukan umat Islam, utamanya dari ormas-ormas besar Islam di Indonesia. Meski tantangannya di sisi yang lain terdapat pula segolongan umat Islam yang mengendorkan solidaritas dan kemajemukan di masa pandemi Covid-19. Karenanya penting bagi umat Islam Indonesia untuk saling mendukung dan memberikan aksi nyata dalam menjunjung konsep solidaritas dan kemajemukan demi kemajuan bangsa bersama. Abstract Covid 19 pandemic has demolished human activities, in period Covid 19 Indonesian Moslems being testing to inside solidarity and plurality. Because that has two choices to Indonesian Moslems united and separated. Plurality and solidarity are very constructing remember for many Indonesian elements Islam an example; MUI, NU, Muhammadiyah, etc. The role of government and preacher is big sake to loose Covid 19 misery. This research aims to looks how is development Moslems solidarity and plurality in the middle Covid 19, with mapping to what extent impact solidarity and plurality are presenting from Indonesian Moslems. The research method used is qualitative, have as base Social observation, the result of this research Islamic concept solidarity and voluntary did Moeslems activities from the big Indonesian Islamic organizations with from any Islamic insantion. But in other that have present Islam be deliberate solidarity and plurality in the time Covid 19. Importantly to Indonesia Moeslems for mutual supporting and giving real actions in support concept solidarity and plurality sake together benefit.

Abstract

The use of computer/ laptop as a medium of communication is a necessity to fulfill the needs of learning during pandemic to attain learning objectives. The present article aims at showing the implementation of teaching reading though computer mediated communication (CMC), particularly in using video as learning medium to assist students in understanding English text well and to interact in group actively in online learning. The subject of research is 2nd semester students class 01 who are 17 students. The type of research is classroom action research. The methods of collecting data are observation and a questionnaire. In analyzing the data, the researchers used interactive analysis that comprises data display, data reduction, and drawing conclusion. Research findings show that the use of video in CMC assists the students to understand the text being learnt properly and they interacted with their friends to discuss the materials of learning and assignments. The conclusion of the present article is that the use of video in CMC is a solution of learning in the pandemic situation to give visualization of the text being learnt.
