Abstract

This study tries to trace and find out the interpretation model of the tafsir Alahkam written by Abil Fadhol Alsenory, as an earlier tafsir of the pesantren in Indonesia. Based on the historical approach, philology, and analysis of critical discourse, by describing the socio-political context, as well as the author's response to the socio-religious conditions at the time, the results indicate that there are one primer script and two manuscript copies of his students. The primer script was written directly by Abil Fadhol, while the manuscript was a copy of the students' writing from Abil Fadhol's explanation during his teaching moment. All of the three texts show that there are two social conditions as its background, namely 'restriction' policy of the New Order regime with NU, and the debate over religious polemic between traditionalists (NU) and modernists in Indonesia in the second half of the 20th century. From this, it was revealed that Abil Fadhol's interpretation model was very critical but contextual and applicable to its surrounding social conditions.

Abstract

Abdullah Thufail Saputra, a Pakistani-Javanese descendant, was one of the most influential figures in the spread of puritan da'wah in Solo in the 1970s and 1990s. He founded the Majlis Tafsir Al-Qur'an, which is now the largest and most massive Islamic organization in Solo. This study uses a qualitative approach. This study is complemented by essential elements such as observations, as well as in-depth interviews with some of Thufail's closest people. This study also examines some of the necessary documents, especially Thufail era brochures, MTA study recordings, and other documents. This article tries to explore Abdullah Thufail's intellectual journey, starting from his traditional educational background, changing his outlook from a traditional person to later becoming a Salafi-puritan, his missionary struggle, and how he founded and developed the MTA. This paper also discusses the struggle of MTA in accepting the sole principle of Pancasila and how MTA subsequently changed orientation after joining the New Order circle in 1984. The author also argues that the doctrine of zakat and jihad, which Thufail interpreted, became the central pillar for further MTA da'wah.

Abstract

This study seeks to examine some characteristics in Tafsīr al-Ibrīz which is considered to have close relations with the pesantren (Islamic boarding school) tradition. This article is important to see the relevance of a commentary with the pesantren tradition. This study finds that the Tafsīr al-Ibrīz has some characteristics which are not found in the books of the Qur’anic commentaries written in Indonesian or even in Arabic. This paper concludes that the use of characters of the script known as Pegon and hanging translation, besides directly can be function as the tool of analysis in Arabic grammar it is also considered to be the form of effort to maintain the tradition. In addition to that, there are some other characteristics that became the hallmark of Tafsīr al-Ibrīz interpretation namely the use of speech level as part of the subtlety of the language which is based on one’s piety and not based on one’s position; the rejection of the idea of anthropomorphism (tajsīm); and the view that makes the Qur'an as the answer to all the problems of everyday life. According to the author, some of these characteristics are part of what is called by Dhofier in his dissertation, as pesantren tradition.

Abstract

Artikel ini akan melakukan telaah awal terhadap Tafsīr Ayāt al-Aḥkām min al-Qur`ān al-Karīm karya Abil Fadhol as-Senory. Kajian ini menjadi penting tidak saja karena terjadinya kelangkaan tafsir Aḥkām di Indonesia, tetapi juga untuk melihat jaringan intelektual ulama pesantren Jawa abad ke dua puluh. Tafsir Aḥkām di samping memerankan posisi penting dalam pembentukan hukum Islam, juga menjadi sumber legalitas bagi perbuatan Muslim baik secara individual maupun kolektif. Kajian ini menemukan bahwa tafsir Aḥkām ini merupakan tafsir Aḥkām pertama di Pesantren, bahkan mungkin di Indonesia. Tafsir ini masih berbentuk manuskrip dan diajarkan kepada murid-murid Abil Fadhol pada 1970an. Berbeda dengan Tafsir Aḥkām di dunia Islam pada umumnya, tafsir ini tidak disusun sesuai dengan urutan mushafi, tetapi sesuai urutan bab-bab yang lazim dalam kitab Fiqh, dimulai dari bab ṭahārah. Tafsir ini ditulis berbahasa Arab, dengan analisis Balaghah dan  Ushul Fiqh yang menarik. Keywords: Abil Fadhol, Tafsir Aḥkām, manuskrip, pesantren

Abstract

The article examines the thoughts of Maimoen Zubair (1929–2019), one of Indonesia's most eminent traditional Muslim scholars, in relation to his attitudes and views on issues of nationality and religious tolerance. Examining this subject is critical because the community's tolerance level is declining, and few studies examine the figures' perspectives on the subject. To gain a better understanding of Maimoen Zubair's thoughts, this research employed a qualitative approach, which included an interview with him and an analysis of his works and lectures. The study finds that Maimoen Zubair holds progressive views on nationality issues, emphasizing the critical importance of preserving nationalism as a means of uniting a nation. This is something that all communities, regardless of their religious affiliation, should do. Individuals cannot worship in peace and comfort if communal conflicts occur. According to him, a country will achieve unity when its citizens respect and tolerate one another. His attitudes and views are derived from traditional Islamic teachings and the traditions of Pesantren (Islamic boarding school), where he studied. Maimoen Zubai's views on nationality are widely accepted in Indonesia, not just among Muslims.

Abstract

As a religious institution, pesantren is expected to be able to spread Islamic values of raḥmatan li al-‘ālamīn and counter radicalism in Indonesia. The portrait of such a pesantren is, for example, reflected in Pesantren Al-Anwar 3 Sarang. This study aims to reveal the efforts made by Pesantren Al-Anwar 3 Sarang in countering radicalism and terrorism in the country. It is a field study with a qualitative approach, where the data were obtained through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. This study found that Pesantren Al-Anwar 3 Sarang had initiated serious efforts in order to counter radicalism. First, the pesantren teaches the values of diversity to students so that they may act more wisely in responding to differences in cultures, thoughts, and religious ideologies. Second, the pesantren instills in students that the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) has been in accordance with Islamic law and the best form of compromise as the embodiment of Dawlah Mu‘aḥidīn (a treaty-based state). Third, the pesantren opposes radical ideologies which are believed to be one of the crucial factors in the birth of violent acts. Fourth, the pesantren propagates tolerance and pluralism because both are believed to be sourced from the teachings of Islam and the Qur'an. Fifth, the pesantren promotes Islamic moderation. Lastly, the pesantren calls for peace among mankind. Overall, the efforts made by Pesantren Al-Anwar 3 Sarang are expected to be a reference for other pesantren in countering radicalism.

Abstract

Studies of the early 19th century on the classical literatures of traditional Indonesian Muslim scholars in response to Wahhabi developments have forgotten the important work of Kawākib al-Lammā‘ah written by Abi al-Faḍal al-Senoriy. This book emerged in the midst of a situation of massive expansion of Wahhabi teachings and of intense debate among modernist and traditional Muslim groups in Indonesia. This book also represents Nahdlatul Ulama’s response towards Wahhabi teachings because the 23rd Nahdlatul Ulama Conference in Solo in 1964 was recommended to be a referred book in pesantrens and other educational institutions of the Nahdlatul Ulama. Through descriptive-qualitative analysis, this article examines the thought of Abi al-Faḍal al-Senoriy in the particular book. This article finds that Abi al-Faḍal has carried out a critical study on Wahhabi teachings, which according to him opposes Sunni teachings for the Wahhabi teachings contradict some important foundation in the Ahl al-Sunnah Islamic tradition in terms of theology, fiqh, and Sufism.

Abstract

Majlis Tafsir Al-Qur'an (MTA) belakangan mengklaim bahwa mereka tidak melakukan penafsiran terhadap Al-Qur'an. Namun tampaknya hal ini berbeda dengan fakta di lapangan. MTA pada kenyataannya mempunyai kitab tafsir dan terus melakukan penafsiran terhadap Al-Qur'an. Tulisan ini menggambarkan sejarah, perkembangan serta dinamika tafsir MTA. Sejak tafsir itu didektekan oleh pendiri MTA, Abdullah Thufail, Tafsir MTA ternyata tidak statis tetapi telah mengalami perbaikan, perubahan, hingga revisi. Tafsir MTA pun diperkirakan akan masih terus mengalami perkembangan dan keberlanjutan. Key word: MTA, tafsir, revisi, berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Kiai Ihsan dikenal spesialis ulama di bidang tasawuf, namun selama ini tidak ada yang menyangka bahwa dirinya juga merupakan mufasir yang kompeten. Hal itu dapat dibuktikan dalam karya serialnya yang berjudul Sirāj al-ṬālibÄ«n, sebuah kitab tasawuf yang mengomentari kitab Minhāj al-‘ĀbidÄ«n karya al-GhazālÄ«. Penafsiran seringkali dilakukan oleh kiai Ihsan melalui penggalan ayat-ayat al-Qur`an yang disitir dari Minhāj al-‘ĀbidÄ«n. Penggalan ayat-ayat itu secara keseluruhan berjumlah 259, dengan rincian 79 di jilid pertama, dan 180 di jilid kedua. Kemudian penggalan ayat-ayat al-Qur`an dari Minhāj al-‘ĀbidÄ«n ia tarik ke dalam Sirāj al-ṬālibÄ«n untuk ditafsirkan. Di dalam Sirāj al-ṬālibÄ«n banyak ditemukan penafsiran-penafsiran yang sangat khas. Tulisan ini akan berpijak pada pendekatan teori intertekstual yang biasa diterapkan dalam dunia sastra. Interteks dianggap menjadi landasan analisis yang tepat terhadap sebuah hasil penafsiran yang diklaim terpengaruh (baca: mengutip) oleh khazanah literatur ulama terdahulu. Berdasarkan temuan penulis ada sembilas belas sumber rujukan yang digunakan oleh kiai Ihsan dalam menafsirkan potongan ayat-ayat al-Qur`an di dalam Sirāj al-ṬālibÄ«n, yang terdiri dari 10 kitab tafsir, 3 kitab tasawuf, 2 mu’jam, 1 kitab Ulum al-Qur’an serta 3 kitab yang belum diketahui secara pasti. TafsÄ«r alKhāzin menempati urutan terbanyak, dirujuk dirujuk 113 kali. Yang menarik, TafsÄ«r alJalālayn yang dianggap merupakan kitab tafsir paling populer di dunia pesantren justru menempati urutan ketiga.

Abstract

This paper examines the collection of manuscript of Tafsir Jalālayn in the Pondok Pesantren Bustanul Ulum, Sedan District, Rembang, by focusing on textological and codicological aspects. This study is crucial to do to view the characteristic form of the text contained in the ancient manuscript of tafsir Jalālayn which then led to findings on how the Quranic interpretation was studied at that time. This research is a qualitative research with a codicology and textology (philology) approach. This finding strengthens the argument that the study of tafsir, especially Jalālayn, was introduced in the Rembang area in the first half of the 19th century, so that it can revise the findings of Van der Chijs and Van den Berg about the absence of tafsir teaching in Rembang area throughout the 19th century. This study identifies several characteristics found in the manuscript text. First, the use of the interlinear translation (Makna Gandhul) and its Javanese codes helps the students to understand the contents of Jalālayn's Arabic interpretation. Second, the hierarchy of language contained in its translation as a form of reflection of the reader's culture in the Javanese environment. Third, the existence of marginal notes written in Arabic indicates that attempts to comment on Jalālayn had been made earlier in the area. Another interesting finding is the consistent and fairly well-established use of codes in Arabic grammatical analysis, which is an indication that Makna Gandhul had evolved in that century.
