Abstract

Reducing the role of the conventional cooling machines into the building to make the thermal comfort is so imperative as their massive energy consumption and their contribution to the global climate change. Shifting into less energy consumed cooling methods using the locally available vegetative sources as passive cooling, can be one of the appropriate methods. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of trees to the thermal comfort performance in a building in Southeast Sulawesi, a region, geographically, located in the equator line with its high daily solar radiation intensity. It conducts an experiment on a small scale building with various tree configurations. The result shows that the trees provide the effect of lowering temperature and maintaining the relative humidity of air, contributing into making the thermal comfort-ability in the building. A comprehensive discussion, using the Psychometric chart, regarding to the reason for the phenomenon is also presented in this paper.

Abstract

The unbalance on the supply and demand on the energy has an impact on the escalating energy price and potentially impedes the development. One of the power demands comes from the energy utilization in the building sector, in which the cooling system is among them. The application of the air conditioning based on the refrigerator system is obviously consuming much energy in the building. Thus reducing the role of this power consumed cooling system is so imperative. To apply the circulating fan or to employ the natural ventilation are among the alternative approaches to make a building cooler, without much consuming energy. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect the circulating fan and the natural ventilation, on the temperature and the humidity in a building in Southeast Sulawesi, a region with its high daily solar radiation. It conducts an experiment on a building model incorporated with the ventilation and the circulating fan. The result shows that by incorporating these alternative cooling devices, the temperatures in the building can be lower than that of a closed building (no fan and no ventilation). The magnitude in the decreasing on the temperature for the building with circulating fan is higher than that of the ventilation. Another result on the investigation shows that the relative humidity in the building with the circulating fan or the ventilation is relatively higher than that of the closed building.

Abstract

Energi memiliki peran penting dalam pembangunan suatu daerah. Listrik adalah salah satu bentuk energi yang telah diterima sebagai salah satu elemen pendorong pembangunan ekonomi. Sulawesi Tenggara, yang merupakan salah satu daerah yang sedang berkembang di Indonesia, tampaknya masih memiliki masalah penyediaan listrik untuk masyarakat. Listrik perkapita untuk provinsi ini adalah sekitar 50 watt, jauh dibanding rata-rata di Indonesia yang hanpir sekitar 200 watt.  Jumlah desa dengan koneksi lisrik adalah 1440 dari total lebih dari 2000 desa. Menurut data dari pemerintah, hampir sekitar 40% dari jumlah total desa ini berada di daerah pesisir. Teknologi pembangkit berbasis turbin angin yang terinegrasi ke perumahan penduduk  dapat menjadi salah satu pilihan dalam mendukung penyediaan listrik untuk masyarakat di daerah pesisir. Namun, selama ini kecepatan angin disekitar bangunan yang rendah telah menjadi kendala dalam aplikasi teknologi ini karena rendahnya nilai kinerja. Penambahan diffuser dipercaya dapat meningkatkan kecepatan angin dalam turbin, sehingga akan meningkatkan kinerja. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah perancangan turbin angin dengan diffuser, untuk membantu mendukung penyediaan listrik didaerah pesisir. Aktifitas yang dilakukan berupa pendesainan, dengan menggunakan model Blade Element Momentum dan data empiris dari penelitian dibeberapa referensi,   dan pengujian dilapangan dengan menggunakan mobil , sebagai pengganti wind tunnel.

Abstract

The clean renewable energy technology development should be on the top government program priority in present day, as the current energy availability and environmental challenges over the majority in the use of the unclean conventional power technologies. University has potential role to support the clean renewable energy development through research activities. This study deals with designing the clean renewable power technology based on a horizontal axis shrouded river current for experimental purpose in Halu Oleo University Indonesia. To fulfill this objective, some parts on the turbine unit are designed to be adjustable, thus, possibly making the process for the experiment. The method utilized in this study is the combination of literature review, mathematical model use, design and manufacture on the turbine. The result of this study is a unit of the horizontal axis shrouded river current turbine in which some of its parts, such as the shrouding device and the blade angle, are adjustable for the experimental purpose.

Abstract

River current turbine is one of decentralized alternative energy technologies which is believed to have less environmental impacts and to offer no complex civil work.  This study is the continuous work of previous study on developing a mathematical model for predicting the performance of river current turbine. In present model, the effect of turbine rotation is included, providing a widening understanding on the behavior of the turbine. To develop the model, the momentum theory which is generally applied for wind turbine is adopted. The result of the model requires inputting parameters of the water velocity, the turbine radius, the wind rotational velocity and the blade rotational velocity to calculate the performance. Verification and parametric study using the model are demonstrated and the limitation of the model is discussed.
