Abstract

This research is to describe the forms and translation techniques of Euphemism in the rendering of The Dancer novel by René TA Lysloff. The researcher used a qualitative method with a content analysis technique. The Data of research are in the forms of clauses containing expressions of Euphemism. The data source was taken from Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk (RDP) novel and its translation of the Dancer. The result showed that there were 35 data (83.3%) of the Euphemism forms of translated into euphemisms, and only 7 data (16,7%) of euphemisms were translated into other forms. The techniques used include single, duplet, and triplet techniques. The conclusions of the research showed that there were shifts in ideological forms and values of the translated novel.

Abstract

This content analysis that belongs to qualitative research aims at finding indebth understanding about turn-taking  produced by S1 students of FKIP- Lampung University during group work discussion. The data were students utterances during group work discussion. All the data were recorded, transcribed, and were analyzed based on the context in order to find out the students’ turn-taking. The result shows that students made turn-taking during the group work discussion and it can be classified into two catagories, namely: 1) by choosing himself, and 2) by choosing others. The speaker chose himself by having four reasons while the speaker chose others by having three reasons. All the turn-takings are made by students in order to finish the task given by the lecturer.

Abstract

This research aims to know and understand more deeply about mystical values and transformative pedagogic values in the Syaikh Siti Jenar novel written by Agus Sunyoto. The focus of this study was the intrinsic and extrinsic structure of meaning in the novel. The method applied in this study is  content analysis  using genetic structure by Lucien Goldmann. The results of the study show a number of sufistic values and transformative pedagogic values. Sufistic values include: repentance, ascetic, indigent, patience, gratitude, pleasure, and trust. While the transformative pedagogic values include altruism, egalitarian, pluralism, and eclectic. The findings of the authors world view includes figures deconstruction of the teachings of Syaikh Siti Jenar, cultural missionary endeavor, the concept of superhuman, mystical literature, and literary history.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan resepsi siswa kelas XI IPS 1 SMAN 6 Kabupaten Bengkulu Tengah terhadap novel Cinta Suci Zahrana karya Habiburrahman El Shirazy. Resepsi siswa tersebut mencakup: (1) respon yang berkaitan dengan struktur novel dan (2) efek komunikatif yang diperoleh siswa. Data penelitian kualitatif ini diperoleh melalui angket terbuka, wawancara, dan diskusi kelompok fokus. Prosedur pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara: memberikan novel kepada siswa untuk dibaca dan dipahami, menyebarkan angket dan selanjutnya melakukan wawancara, mengumpulkan data, mengklasifikasikan data, serta menganalisis data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa novel ini cocok dibaca oleh kalangan remaja terutama anak SMA karena mampu memotivasi menjadi orang yang lebih baik lagi serta gigih dalam meraih cita-cita yang diharapkan. Novel ini dapat menginspirasi siswa SMA untuk menulis sebuah cerita.The purpose of this study was to describe the reception of class XI IPS 1 SMAN 6 Kabupaten Bengkulu Tengah toward the novel of Love of Zahrana by Habiburrahman El Shirazy. Student receptions include (1) responses related to the novel structure and (2) the communicative effects that students gain. This qualitative research data was obtained through open questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Data collection procedure is done by a novel to students to read and understood, spread the questionnaire and then do the interview, collect data, classify data, and analyze data. The results showed that the novel is suitable to read by teenagers, especially high school children because it is able to motivate to be a better person and persistent in achieving the ideals that are expected. This novel can inspire high school students to write or write a story.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to gain the perception of students and lecturers toward academic writing instruction Indonesian language classes in Universitas Sriwijaya. This current research was a part of research and development study on Moodle-based teaching model for academic writing instruction in Indonesian language classes. The steps of research and development model was carried out using survey and content analysis. The research was conducted in Universitas Sriwijaya. Questionnaire, interview and focus-group discussion (FGD) were instruments to collect data. Meanwhile, both quantitative and qualitative data analysis was used to analyze the collected data. After analyzing data from questionnaire, both students and lecturers perceived that academic writing instruction in Indonesian language classes are good and proper. However, the data from interview and FGD showed that there were different views between students and lecturers regarding to academic writing instruction in Indonesian language classes.Keywords: perception, instruction, academic writing

Abstract

The objective of this research is to obtain a deep understanding about the online machine translation of graduate students in the Language Education Doctoral Program of State University of Jakarta, Indonesia, from source language to target language in order to achieve equivalence in the subject of Language Translation and Education. The approach used is qualitative approach with ethnography method. The translation process is conducted by writing down words or copying-pasting sentences to be translated and then those words/sentences will be automatically translated by machine translation. A repetitive edit, revision and correction process shall be first performed in order to get an optimum result i.e. translated sentences are equal in textual and meanings. The deviations occur due to inaccurate equivalents caused by different cultures between the source language and target language as well as the scope of translated language scientific field. The used strategy is a literal translation. Based on the research results, the translation of English tasks to Indonesian through the online translation program is very useful to facilitate the students’ lecturing process in completing their tasks.

Abstract

Need analysis is required to take place before developing a model for learning so that results meet the needs of the students who will use the model. This descriptive study aims at finding out the needs in learning English grammar from students’ perspectives at the EESP of the University of Bengkulu. The data was taken through a questionnaire with 65 questions given to 44 students who took Structure I Course in the 2016-2017 academic year and analyzed quantitatively. The results of this study reveal that the students need a clear goals of learning English grammar, learning approaches that uses the story-based, the deductive, and the inductive approach, a friendly and meaningful learning atmosphere, a learning model that incorporates the uses of stories and current technology for the teaching and learning process and has a complete support system especially the learning materials, and has an attitude, a final assignment and an individual learning process result assessments.Keywords: Needs analysis, model, grammar learning

Abstract

This study aims to scrutinize the utilization both of visual and written language toward the billboard of legislative candidates in the general election 2019. The sources of the data are 2 billboards from 9 parties winning the general election 2019 in Indonesia and the data that has been taken by the researchers are slogans and photos which have been deployed on the billboards. This qualitative research uses the method of descriptive analysis. On billboard 1 (Golkar), the dominance of the persuasive discourse is a wise clause which has been deployed to build a good reputation about legislative candidates. Meanwhile on billboard 2 (PKS), the dominance is the invitation which indicated that the legislative candidates directly invited the people to choose them. Through the visual and written language, the legislative candidates showed their identities strongly. Briefly, these billboards which showed in this research contained the strong persuasive language which combined both of written and visual languages. Keywords: Language, Persuasive, Visual, Parties

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore and reconstruct the cognitive processes experienced by Indonesian scientific writers in selecting research topic in academic writing. By using grounded theory approach, this research explored the Indonesian scientific writers cognitive processes and revealed eleven ways or approaches in finding and selecting research topics, i.e: institutional research road map, literature review, search before research, research trends in the world, national topics of research, interpretation of regulations, court decisions, pros and cons of actual cases or topics, discussion and research sharing method, exposure of controlled data, and looking for possible space for existing papers. Each expertise background dicipline has its own ways and approaches in research topic selection, but there is red thread: the selection and determination of research topics rests on literature review. This research endorses practical approaches to find out research topics containing novelties and state of the art of the research in each discipline.Keywords: cognitive process; academic writing; research topic selection; Indonesian scientific writers; search before research.

Abstract

This research aims at improving students’ ability to write exposition text through learning cycle model to the third-semester students of Indonesian Language Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences, Pakuan University. The method used for this research is action research with qualitative and quantitative approach. Qualitative data are taken from data analysis and analysis of learning process from three cycles. Meanwhile, quantitative data are taken from the comparison of students' score from the first to the third cycle. The implementation of learning cycle that consists of engagement, exploration, explanation elaboration and evaluation in writing exposition activity done in  every cycle successfully improves students’ ability to write exposition text. It is shown on the average score which increases from 52.38 to 80.13. This improvement comes along the improvement of students’ activity in expressing their ideas throughout learning cycle. As a result, learning cycle can improve students’ ability to write exposition text.
