Abstract

The paper discusses the underlying principle of Qur’anic interpretation from rational and socio-historical perspective as brought forth by Muhammad Asad in his magnum opus The Message of the Qur’an. It emphasized on scientific and rational principle that conceptualize its universal and ethical conception as set forth in his erudite commentary and extensive footnotes. The analysis is based on qualitative method using descriptive and analytical approaches. Data provided were analyzed by way of deductive and inference. The finding shows that his interpretation was influenced from the progressive and scientific outlook of Tafsir al-Manar which espoused al-adabi al-ijtima‘i approaches (social-artistic form of exegesis) that constitute Asad’s principal ideas and methodology. It brought forth dynamic socio-historical and ethico-legal interpretation that contextualize its moral-ethical spirit and connotation and provide the foundation for social exegesis in contemporary ages

Abstract

The paper discusses Quranic methodology of interpretation as set forth by Hamka (1908-1981) in Tafsir al-Azhar. It analyses the comprehensive method he crafted and the dynamic approach he brought out in textual exegesis. The extensive discussion and exposition of creative legal thought and ruling, history, mysticism, moral, theology, religion and culture reflected his typical and profound ijtihad (independent reasoning) and philosophy as substantively employed in this work. The method employed in this study was descriptive and analytical. It looked into themes brought forth in Tafsir al-Azhar and deduce its understanding and ideas that the author tried to formulate and projected. The study concluded that Tafsir al-Azhar was crafted based on certain al-adabi al-ijtima‘i’s approach (cultural social). It was a highly authoritative and monumental work produced with convincing analysis and being a dominant and vital reference in the work of tafsir in the Malay-Indonesian archipelago. The Tafsir emphasized on rational approach in understanding Quranic text reflecting the profound impact and inspiration from Tafsir al-Manar, its principal reference, and was highly influential in the intellectual tradition and modern development of tafsir that flourished in the Malay-Indonesian archipelago.

Abstract

Kertas ini menganalisis metode tafsīr al-‘ilmī (saintifik) yang digariskan dalam kitab Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-Ḥakīm atau Tafsīr al-Manār oleh Shaykh Muḥammad cAbduh (1849-1905) dan Rashīd Riḍā (1865-1935). Karya ini mengemukakan manhaj tafsir akliah yang mempan yang menekankan kefahaman rasional dan saintifik terhadap ayat-ayat al-Qur’an. Tulisan ini akan membincangkan latar belakang pentafsir, pandangan dan pemikiran saintifik yang diangkat dalam karya mereka, idealisme pembaharuan yang digagaskan dan manhaj yang diketengahkan dalam tafsiran ayat-ayat yang berkait dengan ittijāh ‘ilm (saintifik). Kitab ini merumuskan manhaj saintifik yang jitu dan menzahirkan apresiasi yang tinggi terhadap upaya ijtihad dan istinbat. Kajian ini akan memetakan ide dan menganalisis kekuatan metode yang dilakarkan dalam mencetus pencerahan akal, sains, antropologi, sosiologi, dan budaya, dan pengaruhnya terhadap karya-karya tafsir di abad moden.
