Abstract

Teaching Islamic Studies in the Age of ISIS, Islamophobia, and the Internet is a collection of articles by contributors who have been teaching classes about Muslims and Islam especially in the Western contexts. This book is edited by Courtney M. Dorroll, an Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at Wofford College in South Carolina. As an academic at a small college, the editor is alert to the challenges presenting advices on how to teach this important but sensitive issue of Islam to new academics and students in the communities. In the age of misrepresentations and stereotypes of Islam, this book is considered important to teachers and students as a means to encourage them to thoughtfully engage with the topic of Islam. The original idea of Teaching Islamic Studies in the Age of ISIS, Islamophobia, and the Internet is initiated from a talk given by Richard C. Martin, a Professor Emeritus of Religion at Emory University. He gave a talk at Wofford College under an invitation from the editor of this book, Courtney M. Dorroll. Professor Martin has written and edited several books including Defenders of Reason in Islam: Mutazilism from Medieval School to Modern Symbol and Rethinking Islamic Studies: From Orientalism to Cosmopolitanism. In this book, the contributors especially shared their personal struggles and address the challenges of teaching about Islamic religion while the media mostly promote Islamophobia and violence. They proposed some approaches to Islamic studies pedagogy and provided some suggestions to better structure the course. These approaches and suggestions are based on their own experiences facing the students and parents who might initially fear the topic related to Muslims and Islam. In order to encourage a deeper engagement in this course, the contributors include collaborative teaching models by doing reading and media suggestions. This approach will result in a broader thinking of students on this subject. It can be said that by reading this particular book, students are exposed to challenging ideas of Islamophobia and encouraged to confront these ideas fairly and objectively. More importantly, this book provides a fair and open discussion of an important issue in teaching about Islam.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the implementation of multicultural education through religious education in schools, especially in the digital era. To reach this research, the relevant literature has been carried out. As a result, Islamic Education is a forum to provide a religious understanding that is inclusive of the community which is ultimately expected to contribute to the formation of a multicultural society with a harmonious life. Multicultural education involves at least three things, namely: a) ideas and awareness of the importance of cultural diversity, b) educational reform movement, and c) process. The learning system of Islamic Education that has multicultural insight should be done by integrating multicultural insights with existing Islamic Education material. The involvement of principals and the government is also needed in providing debriefing or training and the like. The method used must also be packaged in such a way as to condition students to interact with each other in harmony. Likewise, the evaluation process carried out must be based on the principle of fairness objectively rather than subjective certain groups.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has implications for changing the attitudes and behavior of the world community, including in the field of education. The Indonesian government, in this case, has decided to study from home (BDR) for schools to universities in addition to the work from home (WFH) policy. BDR challenges have both advantages and disadvantages. Among the weaknesses that need to be watched out for is the burnout of children in online learning from home, which cannot be denied because similar conditions are also experienced by parents, which erode the enthusiasm for learning to spirituality in the family. Therefore, this paper examines how to reconstruct the spiritualization of education for children in families amid COVID-19. This qualitative research used a descriptive approach, describing the data obtained from the interpretation of the term "tazkiyah" in the Qur’an and verses related to children's education to be contextualized into building the spiritualization concept of children's education in the perspective of Qur'anic Sufism. As part of the literature research, the data analysis adopted Gadamer's hermeneutics developed by Fakhrudin Faiz that hermeneutics revolves around text, context, and contextualization. The results showed that parents have a major role in children's education amid COVID-19 as the prominent educators in the family. These findings corroborate the opinions of Comenius, Nasih Ulwan, Abdurrahaman An-Nahlawi, and Ki Hajar Dewantara about the importance of family education. The spiritualization of children's education in the perspective of Quranic Sufism integrates the three theologies in religion as proposed by Barbour, namely the theology of revelation, natural theology, and religious experience. Therefore, the spiritualization of children's education is a necessity.

Abstract

Community Service Community Service activities aim to empower the MSME community to improve product quality amid the Covid-19 outbreak that hit Indonesia. The fact is that it has an impact on economic aspects, especially MSMEs, to become stagnant. As a result, most MSME actors are hampered and even end up in bankruptcy. This is why MSME business actors change their sales plans through the digitalization program. The digitalization program in question maximizes the marketplace and establishes social media as a marketing procedure. In addition, digital MSME actors are required to be able to work with netizens when selling products and services. Thus, the plan to continue the sustainability of digital MSMEs can be one of the preferences in developing businesses amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

Abstract

Bombings in the name of Islam, such as in Turkey, Indonesia, and the French have damaged the integrity of Islam. These acts of extremism are ubiquitous and lead to Islamophobia especially in western countries. While in fact, Islam has taught and promoted the concept of moderation (wasatiyyah) since its emergence in order to avoid extremism among humankind. One of the main underpinning verses in the Qur’an that talks about the concept of wasatiyyah is Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 143. This paper explores two different views of theological schools, namely Al-Zamakhshari, who represents the Mu‘tazilites and Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, who represents the Ash’arites in dealing with the verse and its interpretations. In its analysis, the paper applied a theological approach to analyze the primary materials. It is expected that the findings will help in the implementation of the concept of moderation (Wasatiyyah) in the contemporary era. Finally, it will also serve as a guide on the ideal way of practicing Islam in order to eliminate and reduce extremism and foster peaceful co-existence between Muslims and adherents of other religions in the world.
