Abstract

Technology and social media affected the use of word as part of language in certain domain as a means of communication. The research objectives were to find out the types of word formation, the dominant type and the reason of dominancy of word formation of photography terminologies in online magazine outdoorphotographer.com. It was a descriptive qualitative research concerning on exploring language particularly on word level. Data were collected from articles published on online magazine from January to August 2018 by reading, note-taking and check-listing. To analyze the types of word formation, a theory by Stockwell and Minkova was used and to analyze the meaning of the terminologies, Cambridge and Oxford dictionaries were used. The result showed that there were 198 photography terminologies found. These terminologies were classified into six types of word formation, namely acronym (12 data), borrowing (3 data), compounding (166 data), clipping (3 data), derivation (3 data) and eponym (1 datum). The most dominant type was compounding. It was very dominant due to its simplicity to form a new word by simply combining two or more words without any change of its elements. Abstract

The era of technology and globalization triggers various new crimes like murder with various motives. The objectives of this research are to reveal the intrinsic elements of the novel and to describe the efforts of the main character to reveal the murder of the story. There are two kinds of data in this research: primary data and secondary data. The primary data are taken from the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. The secondary data function to support the primary data and add more information that is related to this novel. Data were gathered, classified, analyzed and interpreted by using several theories. The results of the research shows that the intrinsic elements are described based on theme, setting, character and characterization, plot and point of view. The efforts of the main character to reveal the murder are: (a) analyzing the report and interviewing the witnesses, (b) solving the problem on the investigation, (c) investigating the murder case secretly and (d) building the strategies to reveal the criminal

Abstract

Purpose of this research is to know the correlation between the students’ Listening Motivation, Vocabulary Mastery, and Speaking ability. The methodology used is in correlation design by using a quantitative method.  The data collecting technique is giving the questionnaire, test, and interview. The data analyzing technique used the correlation of product moment formula to measure the variables. The research findings indicate that there is a significant correlation between students listening motivation, vocabulary mastery, and speaking ability. It was proved by the value of ryx was greater than r table. The correlation between X1 - Y (ryx1) has a value is 0.98, the correlation between X2 - Y (ryx2) has a value is 0.99, the correlation between X1 - X2 (rx1x2) has a value is 0.97, and the correlation between X1 - X2 - Y (rx1x2y) has a value is 0.99. It means that have very high reliability.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the types of modulation procedure in the subtitle of the legend of Korra season 4 and describe the accuracy of the subtitle of the movie. This descriptive qualitative research applied total sampling technique consisting 78 data. The data are subtitles containing modulation procedure taken from English and Indonesian subtitle of the legend of Korra season 4 and its accuracy assessment. To collect the data, I transcribed subtitle and distributed questionnaire to raters to assess translation accuracy. I used Vinay dan Darbelnet’s theory of modulation procedure and Nababan’s theory of translation accuracy assessment. The result of the research shows that there are 8 out of 10 types of modulation procedure; Abstract for Concrete (10 data), The Part for The Whole (6 data), One Part for Another (5 data), Reversal of Terms (14 data), Negation of Opposite (5 data), Active to Passive (29 data), Space For Time (4 data) and Exchange of Intervals For Limits (5 data). Active to Passive was the most dominant type used in the subtitle. Out of 78 data, 49 data (62,82%) are accurately transferred. It can be concluded that the subtitle of the legend of Korra season 4 is accurate.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out the teachers’ strategies to solve the students’ difficulties in writing recount text. This study was conducted in the eighth grade of an inclusion class in Yogyakarta. The study belongs to a qualitative research. The participant of this study was three teachers of English. The study investigation was done by interviewing the three teachers of English at Junior High School. The data collecting technique were interview and recording. There were several steps to analyse the data: first, analysing the students’ difficulties, then interviewing the teachers and the last step is descriptive analysis. The result of the study shows that the teachers’ strategies to solve the difficulties are: (a) in content aspect, the teachers used picture series as the learning media and guided writing; (b) in organization aspect, the teachers used guided writing; (c) in grammar aspect, the teachers used random word, modelling of text and mini dictionary product; (d) in mechanic aspect, the teachers recommended to improve reading habit of students; (e) in generic structure of recount text aspect, the teachers used semi guided and supported by picture series as learning media.
