Abstract

This research is aimed to (1) identify the noun phrases of the endangered traditional farming tools, (2) explain the values of local wisdom which are reflected in traditional farming tools in Java, and (3) explain the efforts that can be done to conserve the noun phrases of the endangered traditional farming tools in Java. The research data consist of many kinds of noun phrases of traditional farming tools in Java in every speech act by the traditional farmer from Javanese ethnic that is gotten from the interview and observation in Magelang district and Sleman district. The verbal data were collected with an observation method. The result of this research showed that 46.3% respondent knew any number of noun phrases in the questionnaire. In reverse, 53.7% respondent did not know any number of noun phrases in the questionnaire. The local wisdom found in this research were the meanings from the noun phrases of traditional farming tools in Java. The meanings have certain values of local wisdom with the beneficial aims for human life.  Furthermore, the efforts that can be done to conserve traditional farming tools in Java are (1) exposing this research in a form of article and journal about traditional farming tools, (2) socializing traditional farming tools in Java through explaining and showing pictures to respondents who have filled the questionnaire. This socialisation is done by giving pictures of traditional farming tools in Java and explaining about the function.

Abstract

This research was aimed to investigate students' motivation and their learning achievement in writing exposition texts. To seek the answer, we used discokaku teaching method and pictorial series. This study was carried out under classroom action research. We implemented three main stages of pre-cycle, cycle I, and cycle II, each cycle using three meetings. The participants were 10th graders of SMA Negeri 5 Magelang. The data were attained from test and non-test techniques. The test technique deployed (1) Kahoot! for assessing their understanding and (2) pictorial series for the writing test. For the non-test, this study adopted some qualitative instruments: journal, observation, interview, and documentation. The result shows that discokaku teaching method and pictorial series were able to improve students’ motivation from 23.47% to 33.87% and their achievement from 3.13% to 78.13% at the end of the cycle 2.

Abstract

This brief research focuses on the semantic classification of measure words in Mandarin and Indonesian as both have the unique characteristic. By using contrastive methods, the measure words in both languages are compared and explained the similarities and differences. The results show that both languages have semantic classifications of the general measure words, national and international standards, containers, indeterminate numbers, a unity of objects, pairs, parts, humans, animals, plants, buildings, vehicles, shapes and distances. Although in general there are similarities, Mandarin has more measure words and is more detailed in classifying things.

Abstract

Active learning method (ALM) has drawn global attention over the past years. In some Indonesian higher educational institutions, the notion of active learning has changed the university lecturer's perspective. It has flipped it from the conventional tradition to the new idea. This paper aims to study the university lecturer and students’ perception on the implementation of active learning in higher education. This study investigates the university teachers and students perception towards the implementation of ALM to promote the students' learning. The participants of the study were 10 university lecturers and 60 students experiencing and practicing the application of ALM in the second language classroom. The issue was investigated using descriptive qualitative research with close-ended questionnaires. The results showed varied perception, beliefs, and practices on how ALM encouraged collaboration and boosted students’ language performance.

Abstract

The paper aims to describe the implicature used by President Joko Widodo in his speech on international forums. This study employs a pragmatic analysis approach to identify the implicative meanings of his speech. The data were the videos and texts of the transcription of President Joko Widodo's speech at the APEC CEO Summit Summit in Beijing on November 10, 2014 and the Asian-African Conference in Jakarta on April 22 2015. The data were analyzed by using note-taking techniques comprising two stages, (1) classifying linguistic data that contains implicatures and  (2) interpreting the meaning behind the implicature used, based on the context of the situation and the background of the relevant discourse. Based on the results, President Joko Widodo‘s speech was dominated by several implicatures including influencing, insinuating, convincing, threatening, complaining, clarifying, and governing.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu mendeskripsi tipe-tipe kompositum subordinatif substantif pada nama-nama makanan tradisional Jawa Tengah dan menemukan dominasi pada nama-nama makanan tradisonal Jawa Tengah. Objek dalam penelitian ini berupa nama-nama makanan tradisional Jawa Tengah. Penyediaan data menggunakan metode simak (observasi) dan cakap (wawancara). Analisis data menggunakan metode dari Sudaryanto yaitu agih dan teknik Bagi Unsur Langsung (BUL).Penyajian hasil analisis dengan metode deskriptif formal dan informal.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada beberapa tipe-tipe kompositum subordinatif substantif yang baru sebanyak sembilan tipe. Pada nama-nama makanan tradisional didominasi oleh tipe leksem a bersumber pada leksem b sebanyak 59 nama dan leksem a sasaran perbuatan leksem b sebanyak 17 nama.Kata kunci: leksem, kompositum subordinatif substantif, nama makanan tradisional,Jawa TengahABSTRACTThe purpose of this study is to describe the types of substantive subordinative compounding words on Javanese traditional dish and find the dominant patterns these Javanese traditional dishes. The object of this study is the Javanese traditional dish in Central Java. Techniques of data collection are observation and interview. The method of data analysis is Sudaryanto’s distributional method with Immediate Constituent Analysis technique. The results were presented with the formal and informal descriptive methods. The results showed that there were nine types of substantive sub-ordinative compounding words. The dominant patterns on this javanese traditional dish were dominated by lexeme type a based on lexeme b with 59 names, and lexeme type an as the target of lexeme b with 17 titles.

Abstract

In the last two decades, women’s issues have been attracting public attention, particularly for those who see and study women from male world of construction. In the literature framework, the existing problems are not limited to the women’s involvement in the creation, criticism, and as readers only. However, the growth of the creation of female poets has opposed to men's superiority towards women. The role of gender and institution of marriage, which have been the symbol of hegemonic masculinity, has become a deconstruction and parody. The aim of this study is to dismantle the gender dictions in the Dorothea’s poem, which reflect the hegemonic masculinity. The object of this research is the poetry collections entitiled ‘Nikah Ilalang’ by Dorothea Rosa Herliany. Technique of data collection used was notetaking. In analyzing the data, Dorothea's poetries are studied by using heuristic and hermeneutic techniques. In using hermeneutic technique, this study used semiotic approach and potential/actual hypogram in order to find a proper model as matrix actualization.

Abstract

In the era of Education 5.0, mobile applications for the teaching-learning process are proliferating. The mobile application also exists in English Phonetics and Phonology Classes. Its name is O’Speak. The use of O’Speak in English Phonetic and Phonology Class derives from the idea of technological development in this digital era. Virtues and hurdles of using O’Speak come out in students’ viewpoints. Therefore, this study is conducted to know the students’ perceptions toward the use of O’Speak in English Phonetic and Phonology Classes. The research method used in this study is a case study that focuses on the phenomenon of O’Speak. English Phonetics and Phonology students are the participants in this study. The finding shows that the students have several overviews toward O’Speak, such as students' concept of O’Speak, O’Speak designs, and O’Speak comments.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan strategi kesantunan positif Presiden Joko Widodo atau Jokowi dalam pidatonya berkonteks diplomasi luar negeri. Penelitian ini menggunakan ancangan pragmatis. Data dalam studi ini berupa kata, frasa, dan kalimat yang memenuhi rumusan strategi kesantunan positif yang dikembangkan oleh Brown dan Levinson (1987). Sumber data dalam penelitian ini bersumber dari video dan teks transkripsi pidato Presiden Jokowi pada Forum APEC CEO Summit dan Konferensi Asia Afrika. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode dokumentasi dan metode simak. Teknik analisis yang dipergunakan adalah model analisis interaktif. Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan Presiden Jokowi menggunakan tiga belas substrategi kesantunan positif yang dikembangkan oleh Brown dan Levinson dalam pidatonya berkonteks diplomasi luar negeri, yaitu (1) memperhatikan kesukaan, keinginan, dan kebutuhan pendengar,      (2)membesar-besarkan perhatian, persetujuan, dan simpati kepada pendengar, (3) mengintensifkan perhatian pendengar dengan pendramatisiran peristiwa atau fakta, (4) menggunakan penanda identitas kelompok (bentuk sapaan, dialek, jargon, atau slang), (5) mencari persetujuan dengan  topik yang umum atau mengulang sebagian atau seluruh ujaran, (6) menghindari ketidaksetujuan dengan pura-pura setuju, persetujuan yang semu (psedo agreement), menipu untuk kebaikan (white-lies), dan pemagaran opini (hedging opinions), (7)  menggunakan  basa-basi (small talk) dan presuposisi, (8) menggunakan lelucon, (9) memberikan tawaran atau janji, (10) menunjukkankeoptimisan,(11) melibatkan penutur dan pendengar dalam aktivitas, (12) memberikan pertanyaan atau meminta alasan, dan (13) memberikan hadiah (barang, simpati, perhatian, kerja sama) kepada pendengar. This research aims to describe the positive politeness strategy spoken by President Jokowi in his speech in a context of international diplomacy. This study uses a pragmatic approach. The data were words, phrases and sentences in President Jokowi's speech at the APEC CEO Summit Forum and the Asia Africa Conference. The data were collected by using documentation and note-taking. These data were analyzed using an interactive analysis model. The results of this study indicated that President Jokowi used 13 positive politeness sub-strategies developed by Brown and Levinson (1987) in his speech in the context of international diplomacy, namely (1) paying attention to the likes, desires and needs of listeners, (2) exaggerating attention, approval, and sympathy for listeners, (3) intensifying the listener's attention by dramatizing events or facts, (4) using group identity markers (greeting, dialect, jargon, or slang), (5) seeking an agreement on a general topic by repeating parts or all of the utterances, (6) avoiding disagreement by pretending to agree, pseudo agreement, white-lies, and hedging opinions, (7) using small talk and presupposition, (8) using jokes, (9) giving offers or promises, (10) showing optimism, (11) involving speakers and listeners in the activities, (12) giving questions or asking for reasons, and (13) giving gifts (goods, sympathy, attention, cooperation) to the listener.

Abstract

The study aimed to investigate: (1) the existence of glottal stop consonants [?], voiced palatal or semivowel consonant [y] and bilabial semivowel consonant [w] in the polymorphemic words with vowel endings of bound morphemes [-an], and (2) the non-existence of glottal stop consonants [?], voiced palatal or semivowel consonant [y] and bilabial semivowel consonant [w] in the polymorphemic words with vowel endings of bound morphemes [-an]. The data were collected from selected participants who represented and met the qualification as native Indonesian speakers. To gather the data, the study used recording and observation techniques which were analyzed speech analyzer Praat by implementing (a) acoustic approach, i.e., analysing the segmentals by using Praat, and (b) inductive method in which it compared the interpretative results of the researchers and the segmental acoustic from Praat. The results showed that (a) the glottal stop consonant [?], voiced palatal or semivowel consonant [y] and bilabial semivowel consonant [w] were identified in the polymorphemic words with vowel endings of bound morphemes [-an] and (b) in the polymorphemic words with vowel endings of bound morphemes [-an] have phoneme-loss of the glottal stop consonant [?], voiced palatal or semivowel consonant [y] and bilabial semivowel consonant [w] in comparison its derivative sounds of the words with any free morphemes and bound morphemes [-an]
