Abstract

This paper presents a novel rotor field-oriented control (RFOC) method for asymmetrical single-phase induction motor (SPIM). It is shown in this paper that by using a suitable transformation matrix (TM) for stator current variables, the asymmetrical equations of SPIM are transformed into symmetrical equations. Based on this similarity, a novel vector conrol technique for SPIM is presented. Performance of the proposed method is assessed using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. Simulation results showed the excellence speed and torque responses obtained using the proposed technique.

Abstract

Three-phase Induction Motor (IM) drives are widely used in industrial equipments. One of the essential problems of 3-phase IM drives is their high speed and torque pulsation in the fault conditions. This paper shows Direct Torque Control (DTC) strategy for vector control of a 3-phase IM under open-circuit fault. The objective is to implement a solution for vector control of 3-phase IM drives which can be also used under open-phase fault. MATLAB simulations were carried out and performance analysis is presented. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v13i2.6910

Abstract

Most types of electrical machines such as Induction Motors (IMs) can be modeled by an equivalent 2-phase machine (d-q model). For instance a single-phase IM with two main and auxiliary windings can be modeled as an equivalent 2-phase IM. Also a faulty single-phase IM (single-phase IM under open-phase fault) can be modeled as an unbalanced 2-phase IM. This study confirms this concept by modeling a single-phase IM with one of its stator phases, open. In addition the study shows that the vector control of this faulty IM can be performed by some modifications in the vector control of healthy IM (the proposed vector control in this paper is based on Indirect Flux-Oriented Control (IFOC)). MATLAB simulation results show the good performance of the proposed technique.

Abstract

The performance of an Indirect Rotor Field-Oriented Control (IRFOC) scheme for Induction Motors (IMs) is strongly dependent on the motor parameters especially, rotor resistance. As such, to ensure high performance drive system, the variation of the rotor resistance due to the temperature increase need to be estimated based on the available terminal variables. However, the algorithm used to estimate the rotor resistance for a balanced Three-Phase Induction Motor (TPIM) cannot be used for an open-phase fault IM; this is because the model of a faulty machine is different from the balanced 3-phase machine. In this paper, an IRFOC of fault-tolerant drive system (with stator open-phase fault) for a TPIM with rotor resistance estimation using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is proposed. The performance of the EKF based rotor resistance estimator is evaluated under different operating conditions using MATLAB simulation package. The proposed algorithm for estimation of rotor resistance in this paper can be applied to either balanced TPIM or Faulty TPIM (FTPIM). The simulation results showed that the proposed system is able to overcome the rotor resistance variations, load disturbance as well as stator open-phase fault condition, with good tracking capability.

Abstract

This study investigates the simple vector control of a 3-phase squirrel cage Induction Motor (IM) under open-circuit fault (faulty 3-phase IM). It was shown that it is needed to supply the stator windings with unbalanced currents to remove the oscillating term of the machine electromagnetic torque. The vector control system is based upon Field-Oriented Control (FOC) that has been adapted for this type of machine. Simulation results are provided to show the operation of the proposed drive system.

Abstract

Speed sensorless vector control of 3-phase induction motor under open-phase fault (faulty 3-phase induction motor) ased on Indirect Rotor Field-Oriented Control (RFOC) is proposed in this paper. To ensure high performance FOC of induction motor drives, the estimation of the rotor speed is necessary. However, the algorithm used to estimate the rotor speed for a 3-phase induction motor cannot be used directly for a faulty 3-phase induction motor. This is because the faulty induction motor model is different from the healthy 3-phase induction motor. To overcome this problem, in this paper a new switching Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) s proposed to update online the rotor speed. The proposed algorithm can be used for estimation of rotor speed in both healthy and faulty conditions. MATLAB simulation results are carried out to show the capability of the proposed drive system. The results show the activity of the proposed method at wide range speed operation.
