Abstract

The power output performance of a photovoltaic (PV) module decreases as the temperature increases. The increase in module temperature above the standard test conditions (25 ⁰C) could reduce the average power output by at least 0.2% for each 1 ⁰C rise. Hence, keeping the module temperature low is necessary for PV systems exposed to high solar irradiance throughout the year. Therefore, this study aims to experimentally analyse the eletctrical performance of passively cooled PV modules in the tropics. The developed cooling approach consists of rectangular plate fins made of aluminum 6061, attached to the rear surface of tedlar layer. The results indicated that the average module temperature reduction of 3.25 ⁰C was observed under outdoor exposures. As a result, the heat sink improved the overall power output up to 14.2%. As the PV performances are site-dependent, these findings are beneficial as it provides a thorough explanation of fin heat sink behavior under long-term field exposures of tropics.

Abstract

The main objective of this work is to study a photovoltaic/thermoelectric hybrid generator system, ranging from characterisation of thermoelectric (TE) and photovoltaic (PV) modules basic elements of thermal and PV energy conversion into electrical energy through necessary modelling steps. The bibliographic study allows TE and PV generation to be positioned in the current context, by presenting their history and evolution. In some sectors, this technology has already matured. For example, in the space sector, the scientific activity seems to show an acceleration in hybrid systems development in the solar field. This research field remains completely open, as evidenced by the multiplicity of technological solutions implemented. A significant part of this work has been to develop generic energy models of various modules (PV and thermal) for a multi-source generator design, based on experimental tests and existing technologies. In addition, a methodology for sizing optimisation of such generator was proposed by considering surface or volume criteria, number of thermoelectric generator (TEG) modules and temperature gradient.

Abstract

Concentrating solar power (CSP) is a solar thermal technology that generates electricity from thermal energy through the sun.The electricitycan be generated with four different types of CSP technologies that include Parabolic Dish (PD) systems. In order to make this technology more practical, the efficiency of the solar technology should be improved.Solar concentration is one of the main aspects that can affect the system’sefficiency. This paper reviewed solar secondary concentrators and discussed their designs and performance. Besides, their strengths and weaknesses were compared. Generally, thesecondary concentrators couldincrease the solar concentration of the solar technologyup to 93 percent.

Abstract

This paper is under in-depth investigation due to suspicion of possible plagiarism on a high similarity indexNowadays, even though many researchers continue to investigate and study about Parabolic Dish based on Concentration Solar Power (CSP), the findings are not conclusive and do not provide accurate evidence and proof on the potential of CSP development in Malaysia. The missing link in the Parabolic Dish (PD) Stirling Engine system modelled is the control systems, which vary the amount of working gas in the Stirling engine. The temperature of the heater in PD system which has been modelled is overheated and causes damage to the heater material, low output efficiency, high thermal losses and effect to the lifespan of the PD system. Therefore, the primary aim of this paper was to design a control system to maximize output efficiency during a normal operation by maintaining the heater/absorber temperature at the highest safe operating point and preventing excessive range of threshold to prevent damage to the heater material.

Abstract

This paper is under in-depth investigation due to suspicion of possible plagiarism on a high similarity indexThe development of hybrid renewable energy sources is vital in power generation. This study focused on design of fuzzy logic control on hybrid PV/Wind system in order to improve the speed of DC motor. The fuzzy logic control based on battery management system has been designed for effective power utilization and improvement of the DC motor speed performance. In battery management system, a control was proposed to operate the charging and discharging mode of battery during non-linear power generation. While the battery would charge whenever the renewable energy power was greater than consumer load power, the battery would discharge whenever the renewable energy power was less than the consumer load power. DC motor speed control, included the simulation, implementation of fuzzy logic controller to DC motor and comparison between PID controller and Fuzzy Logic Controller. The proposed model was simulated using Matlab environment and the results was analyzed. Finally, simulation results were evaluated and validated to determine the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Abstract

A solar thermal technology which is also known as concentrating solar power (CSP) uses thermal energy from the sun to generate electricity. The electricity generation from solar thermal can be produced with four technologies of concentrating solar systems which are parabolic trough, linear Fresnel reflector, solar tower, and parabolic dish-Stirling engine system. This paper reviews the parabolic dish-stirling based on CSP technology by taking into account the performance, the global performance, site for parabolic dish and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Generally, the parabolic dish applications have barriers in terms of the technology and the high capital cost compared to the others CSP technologies.

Abstract

Dish-Stirling concentrating solar power systems is an efficient and reliable source of renewable energy. In this paper, the proposed model showed the idea of Parabolic Dish (PD) systems with control system model which vary the amount of working gas in the Stirling engine. The control systems were designed using Matlab /Simulink 2012a. Based on the developed linearized model, an improved temperature controller with transient droop characteristic and Mean Pressure Control (MPC) has been proposed. This temperature controller was effective in reducing the temperature and improving performance of the PD system. The overall performance of the system improved more than 78% in output power and energy. Besides, the system improved in term of sensitivity compared with the PD system without compensated. In addition, thermal losses decreased to 97.6% which is directly have significant improvement for the output efficiency to the system. The analysis shows that the PD system is feasible in term of technical but not economically feasible in the Malaysia environment.

Abstract

The impact of high PV penetration into the grid particularly at the distribution side has been extensively studied. However, most of the available research focuses on North American style systems. This project aims to investigate the effect of high PV penetration at a residential area in a European-based distribution network, which is electricity supply system Malaysia is based on. The modeling is done using OpenDSS while the network model used is the IEEE European Low Voltage Test Feeder which consists of 55 loads representing a generic housing area. Each load point is then equipped with a 4 kW PV system-representing a typical size for a house installation. PV output variability is then introduced into the modeling using two sample days of actual irradiance variability obtained from UTeM Malaysia; one for clear day and another for a high variability day. Voltage unbalance, voltage rise and reverse power flow were analyzed. One significant finding of this project is that voltage rise exceeds the standard of 1.05 pu during noon. Besides that, the high variability days significantly affect the mitigation measures required to manage reverse power flow.

Abstract

This project aims to determine the potential of grid connected solar Photovoltaic (PV) implementation and project planning of solar PV System in school.  Generally, the educational institution used huge amount of electricity to operate so their monthly bills is expensive. Therefore, the project planning is necessary to determine the potential of solar PV system implementation. The project planning consists of the current electricity consumed by the school and the amount of 120W Monocrystalline PV module needed by them. The cost of project are determines to identify the initial cost of this project implementation. Lastly, analysis on the profit collected by SK Pintas Raya after 20 years of solar PV system implementation proved the importance of this project.

Abstract

The widespread of Photovoltaic (PV) systems as one of the distributed generation technologies could have profound impact on the distribution networks operation, particularly on network losses and network voltages fluctuations. This is mainly caused by the high PV penetrations coupled with high solar variability in the countries with large cloud cover. Therefore, this paper presents an investigation on the impact of residential grid-connected PV system by utilizing a typical low voltage (LV) network in Malaysia under various solar variability days. In this study, there are three scenarios; where, each scenario were performed with different levels of PV penetration and five different solar variability days. The impacts of PV system allocation in different scenarios and various solar variability days are assessed in term of voltage unbalance and network losses. The results propose that Scenario 1: randomly allocation of PV systems across the LV network has the lowest voltage unbalance and network losses especially during overcast day
