Abstract

Foam glass can be produced using cullet and fly ash with addition of dolomite as foaming agent. The aim of this research is to study the influence of adding compositon of glass powder and dolomite on the characterize of the foam glasses and to determine the best composition of the obtained foam glass. Firstly, cullets were milled using crusher. The fly ashwere calcined at 600ºC for 4 hours. Subsequently fly ash, glass powder and dolomite were sieved using 100 mesh sieve. Furthermore, 50 %wt of fly ash, (60, 55, 50, 45, 40, 35) %wt of glass powder and 8 %wt of dolomite were mixed in 32 %wt NaOH solution until formed a slurry. The slurry was stirred for 30 minutes. Slurry was dried in oven at 105ºC for 12 hoursuntil formed the dried green bodies. Green bodies was sintered at 900ºC for 30 minutes. The results show that the glass powder addition of 35-45 %wt obtained an increase in the bulkdensity and compressive strength of the foam glass. The best microstructures of pores can be obtained by adding 45 %wt glass powder and 8 %wt dolomite with bulk density dancompressive strength values of 1.041 gr/cm3; 2.877 MPa.Keywords : compressive strength, dolomite, foam glass, glass powder, palm oil fly ash

Abstract

Utilization of hydroxyapatite (HA) as a bone implant could be done by making the HA in the form of a scaffold to obtain good porosity and good mechanical strength. The purpose of this research is to determine the influence of solid loading HA toward characters of scaffold HA fabricated by polymeric sponge method. Gambas sponges were cut into circular samples of 1 cm diameter and then soaked with distilled water for 12 hours and then dried in the open air for 1 hour. Gambas sponges were then impregnated with a slurry made by mixing 10; 11; and 12 grams of HA, 10% sago, 3% Darvan 821A and 12 grams of distilled water. The mixture were stirred for 20 hours to form a slurry. The substrates were impregnated and then dried at 110oC for 3 hours. The resulting green bodies then burned at 600oC for 1 hour and followed by sintering at 1250oC for 1 hour. The results showed that the addition of HA lead to smaller shrinkage and porosity. In addition of HA, the resulting shrinkage in the range of 57,71-59,46%, porosity 52,30-56,37%, and compressive strength 5,14-7,88 MPa.Keywords: hydroxyapatite, luffa cylindrica, polymeric sponge, scaffold

Abstract

Fly ash (reducted particle size)/carbon black (CB) have been used as the main fillers that increase the quality of rubbers. As each filler possesses its own advantages, the use of fly ash (reducted particle size)/CB blends should enhance the mechanical properties of natural rubber (NR) vulcanizates. This research investigated the effect of blend ratio filler fly ash (reducted particle size)/carbon black and mixing temperature on morphology and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP)/NR composite. Variation of blend ratio fly ash (reducted particle size)/CB at 0/100, 30/70, 50/50, 70/30 and 100/0 were studied in order to determine the optimum fly ash (reducted particle size)/CB ratio that giving rise to the optimum properties. The rubber compound has been made by two roll mill at ambient temperature and 20 rpm rotor speed. Dynamic vulcanization was done on internal mixer at various mixing temperature 175 oC, 180 oC , and 185 oC. Rotor speed on internal mixer at 60 rpm. The mechanical properties was done by Universal Testing Machine (UTM) and the morphology was examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The optimum result was found at fly ash (reducted particle size /CB ratio filler 30/70 and the optimum temperature was 175oC. The best mechanical properties was given on tensile strength 2,4 MPa, elongation at break 14,9 % and modulus elastic 71,6 MPa.Keywords: carbon black, fly ash, maleated natural rubber, natural rubber, polypropylene

Abstract

H2S  in the oil and gas industry is undesirable because it can lead to corrosion of pipes and equipment production. The purpose of this research is to study the effect of distance and the injection  of absorbent flow rate.  Absorption processes carried out continuously with free variables absorbent flow rate of 40 ml/min, 60 ml/min, 80 ml/min and 100 ml/min, with a distance of injection of 110 m, 140 m , and 170 m. The results  of  absorption  H2S was measured by using a gas detector tube system.  H2S absorption process using methyldiethanolamine  as  absorbent  with  flow rate variation of 40 ml/min is 170 ppm, absorbent flow rate of 60 ml/min is 150 ppm,  absorbent flow rate of 80 ml  /min and 100 ml/min which is 125 ppm . The concentration of H2S  for  the distance variation injection of 110 m that is 175 ppm , a distance of 140 m the injection of 150 ppm and at a distance of 170 m the injection of 125 ppm . The optimum conditions of hydrogen sulfide gas absorption process using methyldiethanolamine occurs at a flow rate of 80 ml/min at a distance of 170 m injection of H2S  that can absorb as much as 58 % . The results showed that the greater the flow rate of the absorbent and absorbent injection of the longer distance, the greater the absorption of H2S gas that occurs . Abstract

Bottom ash and fly ash derived from the ash burning bark in the boiler unit of the pulp and paper have the potential to be used as fertilizer because they contain macro and micro nutrients needed by plants. This study aims to determine the potential of bottom ash and fly ash as pellets. Physically, fertilizer in pellet form has smaller volume and easily stored and transported. The experiment were performed with two variable treatment which are the comparation of bottom ash with fly ash (0:100, 25:75,50:50, 75:25 and 100:0) and the adhesive doses (0%,0,5%,1% and 1,5%). The physical properties of resulting pellets were tested including density, water holding capacity, and durability. The effect of pellets on the growth of tomato plants were also carried out. Based on the analysis of research results the pellets meet minimum requirements of organic fertilizer and soil conditioner according to Indonesian National Standard (SNI 7847:2012) and PERMENTAN No.7 year 2011 unless C-Organic. The pelletization of fertilizer to the size of 5 mm can be done by adding adhesive cassava starch 1% with the physical properties of the pellets including a density of 1,724 g/mL, water holding capacity of 65,14% and durability of 93,89%. The use of pellet fertilizer with 100% fly ash has a good effect on the growth of tomato plants, seen from the growth of tomato stem height which is faster than without using pellet fertilizer. Abstract

The country of Indonesia is ranked second in the world for producing plastic waste, so the use of plastic waste must be carried out. The use of plastic waste as an additive in asphalt mixtures can improve the quality of asphalt concrete pavement and also reduce plastic waste. This study aims to determine the effect of adding plastic waste to the characteristics of modified asphalt layer AC-BC (Asphalt Concrete-Binder Course). The research was carried out in an experimental laboratory with the type of plastic used PP the percentage addition of plastic content was 0%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, and 6% by weight of asphalt. The results showed that the addition of plastic had increase the softening point of asphalt and decrease the penetration value of asphalt.Keywords: modified asphalt, marshall characteristics, laston AC-BC, plastic

Abstract

Rubber asphalt modifications are used to produce asphalt roads that are more resistant to high traffic loads and extreme climate change. Natural rubber used can be latex, solid rubber or used rubber. This research aims to determine the characteristics of rubber asphalt with the addition of the antioxidant trimethyl quinoline. In this study the asphalt used is a type of asphalt pen 60/70 Pertamina. Rubber asphalt modifications are made with crepe rubber with asphalt at a mixing temperature of 160˚C for 30 minutes. Crepe Rubber ratios vary 8%, 10% and 12% and the addition of antioxidants TMQ 1%, 2% and 3%. Modification of Rubber Asphalt in accordance with the requirements of Bina Marga General Specification 2012. Rubber asphalt test results showed decreased weight loss and penetration, while mushy spots increased. Based on the results of the study the addition of 10% crepe rubber and 2% TMQ is the most optimal condition with penetration of 68.7 dmm, mushy point 55.45°C and weight loss of 0.059% which is the test result according to the standard. Abstract

Natural rubber can be developed through a process called Maleated Natural Rubber grafting. A study about the influence of the composition of maleic anhydric (MAH) and temperature on the degree of grafting has been done before. The purpose of this research is to determine the optimum composition and temperature in the process of MAH grafted natural rubber. The composition of MAH is 7, 8, 9, and 10 phr with temperature conditions is 150, 155, 160 and 165oC. The grafting process use internal mixer operated at 60 rpm for 10 minutes. Grafting degree determined by titrimetric method where MNR in xylene solution titrated using MeOH solution. The results showed that the optimum composition and the temperature are 8.36 phr and 160oC with 3.62% grafitng degree.  Keywords: grafting degree, maleic anhydric, maleated natural rubber, optimation, temperatur

Abstract

The availability of wood in Indonesia is increasingly limited due to forest degradation and increased demand for wood. One of the efforts to reduce the use of wood directly is to develop the manufacture of Wood Plastic Composite (WPC). WPC consists of matrix, filler, and additives such as compatibilizer and initiator which is useful to increase the value of the mechanical properties and physical properties of the WPC. This study aims to determine the effect of maleic anhydride (MAH) compatibilizer with Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) initiator on the properties and morphology of WPC produced, and determine the effect of palm frond (SPS) / HDPE powder ratios on the properties and morphology of WPC. SPS composition is 80mesh and polyethylene is 50:50, 60:40, 70:30 with 3%, 4%, 5% MAH additive mixture, 1% DCP and 2% paraffin. The palm fronds were prepared using oxalic acid at 120ºC with 15 minutes soaking. The process of mixing filler, matrix, and additives using Labo Plastomill internal mixer at 150ºC and 80 rpm rotor speed. Composites produced were tested including physical properties, mechanical properties and morphological tests. The results showed that the mixing ratio of SPS / HDPE and the addition of compatibilizer affected the value of physical properties and mechanical properties of the WPC. The best WPC material was obtained in the mixing ratio of SPS/PE (50/50) with the addition of 5% MAH with 26.631 MPa tensile strength, 2106.4 MPa MOE, 51.23 MPa flexural strength, 1.16 gr / cm3 density, 0.92% water absorption, and 0.17% absorption thickness.Keywords: maleic anhydride, palm frond, polyethylene, wood plastic composite

Abstract

The availability of palm frond has a potential to use for decrease utilization of woods directly. One application is the wood plastic composite (WPC). Research on the WPC is still growing which aimsto continue to get better quality of product. The objective of this research was to determine the effect of palm frond composition to properties and the morphology of wood plastic composite(WPC). The Composition of palm frond measured at - 40 ~ +80 as the filler and the polypropylene as the matrix is 30:70 which mix with additive 2% and Maleic Anhydride Polypropylene (MAPP) 5%. Palm frond prepared using oxalic acid, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide at a temperature of 120oC with 15 minutes immersion time. Filler mixing process, matrix, and the additive use Labo Plastomill internal mixer at a temperature of 170oC and the rotor speed at 80 rpm. Tests include cellulose test while the mechanical properties testing are tensile strength and flexural strength, and physical properties include density, water absorption and thickness swelling. Morphology test used the electron microscopy scanning with amagnification of 100 and 500 times. The results showed that the type of preparation has a relatively significant influence. Best WPC material is used oxalic acid mixture at a temperature of 120oC with19,214 MPa tensile strength, flexural strength of 43 639 MPa, density 0974 gr / cm3, 0.32% water absorption and thickness swelling 1.42%.Keyword: filler, palm frond, wood plastic composite
