Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe students’ error on (1) the ability to understand the term of algebraic forms, and (2) the ability to communicate the term of algebraic forms into words and verbal forms. This is a case study. The study shows that: (1) the ability to understand the term of algebraic forms are low because of misunderstanding the slight differences between exponent and algebra itself, and (2) the ability to communicate the term of algebraic forms into words and verbal forms are challenging for them especially when they do not really understand the concepts.

Abstract

Abstract

Probolinggo Regency has a low literacy rate (78.09%) which is below the average of the East Java Province (88.34%). This data is supported by the recapitulation results of the Directorate of Literacy and Equality Education in 2014 which states that the illiteracy rate in Probolinggo Regency is 64.163 people. Meanwhile, this regency is considered having a high potential in the field of fisheries through catfish farming, located in Sumberasih District. This article discusses the results of the dissemination of illiteracy eradication using instructional book of catfish cultivation. The empowerment method implemented was Empowerment and Development. The instruments used were interview, observation, document, questionnaire, and test. On trial phase, a mentoring was done to the learning community that was called WB. Prior to the mentoring session, pretest was implemented then posttest afterwards which were all done to the WB. Results show that there was an improvement on class average grade, previously it was 58,5 subsequently after the use of illiteracy eradication book, the average grade has improved to 79. The responses gathered from the WB towards the instructional book were very positive. Thus, instructional book of catfish cultivation can be used as a textbook in illiteracy tutorial in minapolitan area.

Abstract

This study examined the learning of Pi (π) numbers in elementary school mathematics. This research was conducted by employing case study method containing a single case concerning the Pi (π) numbers. A total of 432 pre-service teachers participated in the study from the academic year of 2019-2020. This research employed observation, interview, and document analysis as the data collection tool. The conduct of the research involving the teachers and pre-service teachers was made in the classroom environment. The practice that participants posed for the account of Pi (π) number were analyzed by descriptive analysis technique in the scope of qualitative analysis. The data obtained from the participants were summarized and interpreted according to the predefined theme, and findings were arranged by a direct citation of the problems. Based on the analysis of the research, it showed that participants had problems in determining Pi (π) numbers as Pi (π) numbers are only taught by memorization methods. The teachers also did not understand about the source of Pi (π) number. Learning Pi (π) numbers are directly practiced through problems and formulas. Understanding the formula of plane figures is also not yet understood, so teachers and students basically only memorize the formula.
