Abstract

This study were conducted to determine the presence of toxocariosis in beef cattle in Kasiman Subdistrict, the Regency of Bojonegoro kept under the Sekolah Peternakan Rakyat (SPR) programme. The experiment were done to identify several risk factors that may play certain roles on the degree of prevalence and infection intensity. A total of 263 head of local beef cattle with various ages were taken for faecal samples and 80 farmers were interviewed. Results of the experiment indicated the prevalence of toxocariosis was 5.32% (CI 95% = 2.61-8.04%) influenced by age and gender which showed an effect on the risk of infection. The prevalence tends to decline by age group (p <0.001): calves under 6 months of age (23.68%), and between 6-12 months of age (7.41%), 1-2 years old calves (2.04%) and the above 2 years adults (1.34%). The prevalence is higher in the males group (12.7%) compared to the females group (3.0%), (p=0.003). Logistic regression analysis concluded that age was the only affecting variable to the rate of infection with mathematical models for toxocariosis. Logit toxocariosis = -0.058 -1.098 age.

Abstract

Semi-arid region of West Timor has a good potential of livestock farming, including goat farming. Small scale goat farms in West Timor raise their animals in semi-intensive system by rearing their animals in pasture or rice field. There are a high demand of goat in the local market especially prior to Kurban Fiest. Despite high population growth of goat, there are some reasons causing low productivity, such as parasite infections. Taeniid cestodes infect carnivores (as well as human) as the definitive host and involve a wide range of intermediate host where they present as metacestode cyst.1Cysticercosis or infection of cestode larval stages (metacestode) may appear vary from subclinical to severe clinical signs.1 Cysticercus infection lead to productivity losses2 even mortality in livestock.3 They are responsible for economic losses due to partial or total condemnation of carcass and offal.1, 3 Cysticercosis also pose a risk of public health.3 The zoonosis risk even higher in developing countries and especially in rural area, people lives in close proximity with animals,  poor sanitation3 and low awareness. Dogs and wild canids are common definitive host of the most metacestodes occurring in goat and other ruminants.1 But some of them involve human as definitive host as well as incidental intermediate host in their life cycle.4 To make an effective control of cestode infection, it is necessary to identify the agent and collect its epidemiological data. This research aims to determine the prevalence and to identify the etiological agent of cysticercosis of goats in semi-arid region of West Timor.Cysticercosis in Goats in the Semi-arid Tropics of Timor Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Abstract

Rats (Rattus spp) are known as pests as well as sources of zoonotic diseases such as bubonic plague, leptospirosis, bush fever, salmonellosis, inflammation of the brain, pneumonia, blood diarrhea, and gastritis caused by parasites. So, a study was conducted to see the types of endoparasites in the gastrointestinal tract of rats (Rattus spp) at the Inpres Naikoten Market and Oeba Market and to find out whether there are zoonotic parasites. The samples used were 50 digestive organs of rats (Rattus spp) and fresh feces. Identification was carried out using the nematode clearing method, at the dehydration stage using alcohol 30%, 50%, 96% and at the clearing stage using clove oil to purify adult worms. The simple flotation method was used to determine whether or not eggs of worms and protozoa were present in the feces of rats (Rattus spp). The results showed that adult Cestoda worms were found and no protozoa were found in the feces of rats (Rattus spp).

Abstract

Tuna is often infected with endoparasites, one of which is the Anisakis sp. parasite. Anisakis sp. It is zoonotic, causing Anisakiasis in humans. In tuna, the parasite predilection of Anisakis sp. occurs in the digestive organs and muscles. The purpose of this study was to identify, as well as to determine the prevalence and degree of infection with the parasite Anisakis sp. on tuna in the waters of Ende Town. In this study, samples were taken from three markets in Ende Town, namely Mbonga Wani Market, Senggol Market and Wolowona Market. The sample of tuna that was taken was bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) with a total sample of 95 bullet tuna (Auxis rochei). From the results, it was shown that Anisakis sp. which infects bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) is the parasite Anisakis sp. type I. This is characterized by finding mucrons, boring teeth and ventriculus. In bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) the prevalence of Anisakis sp. is 26.31% and is included in the light category. On the prevalence of Anisakis sp. based on body length, bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) measuring 10cm – 20cm has a prevalence value of 10.52% while bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) measuring 20cm – 30cm has a prevalence of 36.84%. The value of the parasite infection degree Anisakis sp. on bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) is in the medium category with the infection degree value of 11.12.

Abstract

Coccidiosis is a gastrointestinal parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Eimeria spp. The infective form of Eimeria is the oocyst that can be found in almost all tropical environmental conditions and the possibility of disease as an opener to other agents. The percentage of coccidiosis incidence in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is increasing from year to year, this is due to many factors that play a role in the spread of coccidiosis in livestock. One of them is the level of resistance of Eimeria oocysts, which can last a long time, so that they remain vigilant and more attention needs to be paid to prevent the spread. The purpose of compiling this literature study is to determine the risk factors associated with the incidence of coccidiosis in ruminants and control of coccidiosis in ruminants in dry land of East Nusa Tenggara. This literature study was obtained from searching and collecting from various reference sources using Google Scholar with the help of the Mendeley application. There are 53 literatures obtained and after being analyzed and known risk factors related to the incidence of coccidiosis are maintenance management, season (temperature and humidity), environmental conditions, age of livestock, and sex. Coccidiosis control in ruminants can be done with coccidiostat therapy and herbal ingredients as well as improving management this case regular sanitation and cleanliness of cages, stables for adults and young livestock, rotation of pastures, containers or feed containers on a regular basis and endeavored to avoid contamination by feces.
