Abstract

The accumulation of greenhouse gases cause climate change. One of the effort to decrease accumulation gas is increasing the role of forests as carbon sinks through good management system. Ecosystems in coastal areas that have ecological function as a carbon sink is a mangrove forest. The ecological functions of mangrove forests can save carbon in large numbers both on the vegetation (biomass) and other organic materials which found in the forest. The purpose of this research to calculate the carbon biomass of mangrove vegetation on the surface through allometric equations, and to build modeling algorithms the carbon content of mangrove species in the region based on remote sensing technology using Quickbird satellite imagery. The research used an exploratory field survey and purposive sampling method in mangrove area. Measurements was performed on the surface of stored biomass without damaging vegetation (non-destructive sampling) through the measurement of trunk diameter (DBH). The results showed that there are 21 mangrove species found in mangrove areas Kemujan Island. Total biomass on the surface (trunk, branches, leaves) is 182.4 ton (91.2 tons C), with the largest carbon storage in the trunk. Based  on the results of polynomial regression for modeling the carbon content of each spesies, the results of modeling algorithm for Ceriops tagal with y = -0.003(B2/B3)2+ 0.267(B2/B3) – 3.452; Rhizophora apiculata with the algorithm y = 0.001(B2/B3 )2 - 0.116 (B2/B3) + 3.415; Bruguiera cylindrica with the algorithm y = -0.003(B2/B3)2 + 0.336(B2/B3) – 7.265; Xylocarpus granatum with algorithm y = 0.000(B2/B3)2 - 0.058(B2/B3) + 2.101; Rhizophora mucronata with the algorithm y = 0.000(B2/B3)2 - 0.022(B2/B3) +1.941.
