Abstract

Transition region based image segmentation is one of the simple and effective image segmentation methods. This method is capable to segment image contains single or multiple objects. However, this method depends on the background. It may produce a bad segmentation result if the gray level variance is high or the background is textured. So a method to repair the transition region is needed. In this study, a new method to repair the transition region with median filter based on the percentage of the adjacent transitional pixels is proposed. Transition region is extracted from the grayscale image. Transition region refinement is conducted based on the percentage of the adjacent transitional pixels. Then, several morphological operations and the edge linking process are conducted to the transition region. Afterward, region filling is used to get the foreground area. Finally, image of segmentation result is obtained by showing the pixels of grayscale image that are located in the foreground area. The value of misclassification error (ME), false negative rate (FNR), and false positive rate (FPR) of the segmentation result are calculated to measure the proposed method performance. Performance of the proposed method is compared with the other method. The experimental results show that the proposed method has average value of ME, FPR, and FNR: 0.0297, 0.0209, and 0.0828 respectively. It defines that the proposed method has better performance than the other methods. Furthermore, the proposed method works well on the image with a variety of background, especially on image with textured background.

Abstract

Automatic multi-document summarization needs to find representative sentences not only by sentence distribution to select the most important sentence but also by how informative a term is in a sentence. Sentence distribution is suitable for obtaining important sentences by determining frequent and well-spread words in the corpus but ignores the grammatical information that indicates instructive content. The presence or absence of informative content in a sentence can be indicated by grammatical information which is carried by part of speech (POS) labels. In this paper, we propose a new sentence weighting method by incorporating sentence distribution and POS tagging for multi-document summarization. Similarity-based Histogram Clustering (SHC) is used to cluster sentences in the data set. Cluster ordering is based on cluster importance to determine the important clusters. Sentence extraction based on sentence distribution and POS tagging is introduced to extract the representative sentences from the ordered clusters. The results of the experiment on the Document Understanding Conferences (DUC) 2004 are compared with those of the Sentence Distribution Method. Our proposed method achieved better results with an increasing rate of 5.41% on ROUGE-1 and 0.62% on ROUGE-2.

Abstract

One of the techniques in region based image retrieval (RBIR) is comparing the global feature of an entire image and the local feature of image’s sub-block in query and database image. The determined sub-block must be able to detect an object with varying sizes and locations. So the sub-block with flexible size and location is needed. We propose a new method for local feature extraction by determining the flexible size and location of sub-block based on the transition region in region based image retrieval. Global features of both query and database image are extracted using invariant moment. Local features in database and query image are extracted using hue, saturation, and value (HSV) histogram and local binary patterns (LBP). There are several steps to extract the local feature of sub-block in the query image. First, preprocessing is conducted to get the transition region, then the flexible sub-block is determined based on the transition region. Afterward, the local feature of sub-block is extracted. The result of this application is the retrieved images ordered by the most similar to the query image. The local feature extraction with the proposed method is effective for image retrieval with precision and recall value are 57%.
